I have the big 12" base guillotine cutter and it is sitting on my craft table in my bedroom and two days ago my 20 year old son walks by and barely bumps/runs into the handle...it wasn't hard enough to even move the cutter or the table, it was a gently bump....the arm broke off! :shock:
Right up there next to the swivel...the plastic snapped right in half...so....
I emailed the company today and explained what happened and asked if a replacement arm was available for it....and sadly there is not one available...but.......
They told me they stand behind their product and................
That is so great! I love to hear stories like this because I just bought my first Tonic trimmer and am very excited to use it. Thanks for sharing your story

Dorinda - I have to agree with you; a few months ago I bought a couple of their punches and one of them kept sticking, no matter what weight of paper. I had purchased them out of town, so I e-mailed Tonic to see if they would do a return, and they just sent a new punch and told me to toss the old one!
That gesture on their part has earned them a very loyal customer - I now own a much more extensive collection of the punches plus the 12" guillotine cutter (along with their Tim Holtz scissors, distressing tool, yada yada yada)
Juliana - like a hot knife thru butter! My first attempt with it I was a little disappointed, because it seemed like the blades were hanging up against each other. Then I realized I was using it like we have to use the one at work - kind of guiding the cutting blade in towards the platform. Don't have to do that with this cutter, just line up the paper, press down on the plastic guard to hold the paper in place, and bring the blade down. Feels like no effort at all (although I've only tried single sheets of cardstock so far) and best of all, the measurement is dead on! The cutter at our office, if you line paper up at 5.5", you do not end up with 2 equal halves-they're about 1/16" of an inch off or so. And no funny curve in the middle like with my sliding trimmer, and no replacing blades or cutting pads like with my rotary trimmer or my cutterpede. It's not what you'd call portable, but I can live with that.

I don't seem to have any problems with mine at all, until it broke anyway. But it always lines up fine for me
Great to hear the company backs its product! I have one of the smaller trimemrs and want the 12-inch.
Could someone please tell me if the 4.25, 5.00, 5.50 and 6.00 markings are easy to read? For example, on one of my paper trimmers it is difficult to read the 5-inch marking and on a different brand the 4.25 marking is hard to read. The difficutly is because of the swing arm so I guess I really want to know if that intereferes with reading the measurments (and, if so, which measurement).

That's the same thing I don't like about all my smaller trimmers-the swing arm hits right at a spot that I need to read the measurement.
On the Tonic 12", there is no swing arm; it's a big platform, so all the measurements are easy to read. It's not something you'd want to take along, though, if you go to a lot of crop-type events. It takes up a lot of space on your table.
I finally broke down and bought one last week. I've put it to the test over the last two days and I've been really happy. This is the first paper cutter I've owned that truly gives you a straight cut. Oh, and let me tell ya...that blade is super sharp...ask me how I know...
Overall though, I personally think it's a great investment!

If so, the 6" is kind of hard to find because there is a gap where the extension thing comes on, but once you know where it is you are fine.
You can cut teenie tiny strips, but you would measure backward. So not by looking at the right side of the ruler cause you can't see past a 1/2" or so, but if the left side of the paper is at 5" and you move it over to the right 1/16" voila!

I cannot cut something thinner than 1.5"
Would the Tonic correct these problems?
I would be totally in love with my Carl too except for these things and that I somehow have broken the bit of plastic that holds the mat in :rolleyes: so that can be fun at times.
I have a 12" Tonic guilliotine and it worked great! Actually, this is my 2nd one. The first one was like Doxiegirl described-it would cut just a 'hair' off. I couldn't figure out why. It actually woke me up one night so I check the measuring part at the top. The 'ruler' portion did not line up with the grid on the platform base. I called Tonic and spoke to Steve Ramsey. Hehad a new one sent to me and I just returned the old one in the mailing box with the provided address/postage sticker. (Got it within a week) Yesterday, I called Tonic again because my guilliotine arm keeps getting lose. (I found that if the 'arm' is loose, the paper does not cut cleanly, especially at the bottom.) Again I talked to Steve Ramsey and he said they stand by their 5-year guarantee so will be sending me a new cutter. He said that there is a spring something or other that should hold the screw tight.
Great customer service - no accustory grilling - just we stand by our guarantee.

This is what I thought which is why I wanted to know which measurment is at the extension.
I actually would only need to cut at 6-inches rarely (and if I'm using 8.5 x 11 would cut at 2.5 or 5.0 to avoid misaligning)
I love the way my little Tonic guillotine makes the teensiest of slivers so I really want a larger version.

Thanks for clarifying this. I would need my trimmer to ne portable (even within my home) although I'd prefer the model you have.

You can cut thin strips as someone else mentioned and the blades are self sharpening on the big model. You just bring the arm down without any paper and kind of angle the blade toward the base so the blades sharpen by rubbing together. I've cut 140 lb watercolor paper on it with good results. There are no mats to replace. Don't know about the small more portable one. If there is an Archiver's in your area, they carry both models. I got my large one for about 35.00 with a 305 off coupon-initially more expensive than some, but nothing to replace on them either so it's cheaper in the long run.
Wow, that is awesome! I've heard great things about their customer service so was happy to hear this as well. I have their 6" base cutter and adore it.
Tonic is such a great company. They are based here in Madison. They also have some really nice corner punches and of course, the Tim Holtz scissors ROCK!

Boy howdy, I agree with this one. I've had my scissors about a year and cut EVERYTHING with them in and out of my craft room - except maybe trimming the bushes in the flower bed. ;) Sometimes I have to clean adhesive off of them, then they're back to razor sharp! Best scissors I've ever owned hands-down.
