I splurged on the 120-color set, and I am in love with it! But it's hard to find exactly what pencil I'm looking for ... how do you guys organize yours? By color family? Alphabetical order? Something else?

I have my blue, greens and purples together, then my browns, oranges and yellows together and then my reds, pinks and greys together. I'm not sure why I chose to put them like that but it seems to work for me!
I store mine the same as Gatomom . blues, greens, purples together, etc. I tried keeping my 120 pencils in their original tin, stored by their consecutive numbers but found the colors were too mixed up to be practical..Now I keep them in holders on my desk so I can easily pick out the various colors..a darker shade, a lighter shade, etc.
gladys
I dont have the large set but the way I have organized mine was to put each color in a baby food jar, blues in one jar, purples in another jar,etc .They are lined up on the back of my desk so they are not in my way.
Okay, this may sound a little crazy, but this is what I did.. I went through them in the order that they came in, and made a separate chart with the name of each colour - in the same order as they are in my box - and on my chart I have coloured with each pencil beside it's name. They are pretty much - but not entirely- in their colour group that way .
That way, I can find the colour I want by just looking on my chart . I found that the idea of keeping them in colour groups was difficult - as sometimes it is hard to decide - is this more of a green / or more of a blue and that the colours on the outside of the pencils didn't always come to close to the colour of the lead.
It really saves a lot of time to keep them in order, both in the box and on a colour chart that you have created. At least, that is what I find. Don't ask about how messy my stamping room is , though.
That doesn't sound crazy to me at all, Deborah! I was actually thinking about making a color chart with the colors in alphabetical order and posting it on the wall so I could easily find the color I want, and then look up the pencil I want. (I was thinking about putting them in alphabetical order, too.)

I pulled the Prismacolor to SU list off here and bought the colors that correspond. The pencils are separated into SU families and put into those sliding pencil cases (except the neutrals which are in a pencil cup.
I got my Prismas yesterday--and I'm hooked! They are great! I am using the Mona Lisa brand of OMS (odorless mineral spirits, or Gamsol), and didn't have any problems with fumes or anything. As soon as I dipped my blending stump onto the sponge in jar that I had it in, I lay the lid back over the top. Worked with them all evening and had a ball!
The videos listed in a post above are great. They are very well done and easy to follow.

I love this one since I can take out each individual row. It was a toss up between the one I got and this one: http://www.dickblick.com/zz229/96/
But since I didn't need them to zip up all the way I got the first one. I have never had a problem with any of my pencils coming out of the case, plus the first one stores each pencil individually which the 2nd one stores them in sets of 3. Well, I only need one pencil at a time, so this works better. I did get this case also: http://www.dickblick.com/zz228/42/
the one for 24 pencils, so that I had something I could put just a few pencils in while I was out and about and wanted to color (since most of the House Mouse images I color have a few main colors).
That being said, I keep my in numeric order, so I can find what I need quickly and easily. I printed out the chart that has all the colors listed and colored in each square so I can see what each color is. I also printed out this chart: http://www.heartprints.net/gallery/magic/card/2552/ from Sue Nelson, and colored in each square and then used my OMS to see how the color changed when OMS was added to the paper I use the most. Hope this makes sense?

This topic comes up quite often, I've noticed. And each time I get tempted to purchase the Pencil Cases mentioned above. I keep holding off, but I don't know that I'm going to be able to hold off much longer! Right now I have the ones that coordinate with the SU colors in a little pail I purchased from my LSS. But it's a pain to pick out the one I want right away. And it's a pain to use various shades when having those separated from the others in my set of 132. I'd have to get more than one case to hold 'em all. Do I get two '72 cases' or one 120 and one 24? What to do? What to do?
OK, I've created a chart with all the colors in alphabetical order, if anyone is interested It fits on one sheet of paper, and it includes the color name, color number and a spot for you to fill in a swatch. If you trim it down a bit lengthwise, it will fit inside the lid of the 120-pencil case
I just finished printing off the other chart you linked above and was coming back to this thread to thank you and here you posted another chart - WOW! Thank you so much for sharing BOTH of these - just what I needed! I'm going to put the one you made in my tin lid and the other chart in page protectors in a binder. Thanks again!!!!

You asked for an opinion, I would go with the 2 "72" cases personally..the 120 is just so honking big! I love my 120 case, but I wish I had a smaller one other then my 24 one. If that makes sense?

OK, one more chart! I listed all of the pencil colors, as well as their SU equivalents (as determined by others smarter than me!), and the sets that they belong to. 12N means the set of 12 new colors, 24P is the set of 24 portrait colors, and 24L is the set of 24 landscape colors.
Can you tell I'm not getting much housework done today?

I sorted mine out by SU colors and have 5 old pint-and-a-half canning jars to hold them:
Bold Brights & Soft Subtles
Earth Elements & Rich Regals
blues, greens, purples
reds, organges, yellows
neutrals
I decorated each jar rim with a tag that has the contents and some ribbon; they're on a shelf right by my table in easy reach. They're super easy to grab, they're fun to look at, and I actually use them this way.
subscribing b/c all you SCSers have made me think I need these too...
so I will be getting these soon and will need all these wonderful reources you have listed here! thanks so much!
I pulled the Prismacolor to SU list off here and bought the colors that correspond. The pencils are separated into SU families and put into those sliding pencil cases (except the neutrals which are in a pencil cup.
I also pulled the above mentioned chart and bought the colors that corresponded, open stock at Dick Blick. I only wanted to deal with one name, so I used my label maker (love that thing!) and labeled the pencils with their SU color name. I also punched a 1/4" circle of corresponding cardstock, and glued it on the end of each pencil. That way I can see at a glance all the colors. My husband made my inkpad holder, one column for each color family plus a column for neutrals. The pencils live horizontally, in a slot at the top of each column.
Another thing I now can't live without! (Especially after watching the Gamsol videos.) I found the 120 set (new) on Ebay Express for $69 last night and snapped it up. Then another seller had the 12 new color set for $4.95 plus $3.99/sh. Now I just need to figure out how I want to store them. ;)
