Question Help With Inks Please...

I get really confused about the various inks and what they do. Can someone please explain to me the differences between alcohol inks, pigment inks, permanent inks, distress inks and application examples for each?

I'd really appreciate it. The only thing I'm sure of is that VersaMark is embossing ink (right?)

Hi Janet!

The link below is to an article by Ellen Hutson from 2009. I scrolled through it quickly but believe it will be helpful. It's a bit long because she covers several types of inks.

In Touch: Ink Pad Comparisons - Let's Get Inky and Explore! by Ellen Hutson

At the very least, it is a JumpStart to further questions and bumps your thread to the top (where more readers are likely to see it)

Hi Janet- hope this helps a little:
Alcohol inks, come in little bottles, and you apply to cardstock etc with an applicator. You can use it for colouring images, with the Blender Pen,Here is a You Tube vid of Tim demoing them.
Pigment inks are a thicker ink, in pad form. Generally used for Heat embossing- the ink is 'sticky', so holds the embossing powder. Most pigment inks, but not all, won't dry without heat setting.
Permanent inks, like Staz-on, can be used on cardstock too, but really come into their own on slick surfaces- tiles/glass. acetate etc, that normal inks would not stick to, or would not dry on.
Distress inks are a Dye based inkpad, and hold their colour very well, even when water is added. Not all dye based pads do that. As a slight bending of the 'rules' you can usually use Distress ink to heat emboss, as its a very wet ink, so depending on your cardstock, it is possible.
Here, on the Tsukineko website, are all the brands of inkpads they make( most of the well known ones), and their uses.
Yes, Versamark can be used for embossing with, as can a number of Embossing Inkpads. Versamark also gets used for the 'watermark' tone on tone technique. You stamp with the versamark onto coloured cardstock, and as it dries you get a darker tone of the cardstock colour showing where you stamped, like a watermark.

Another use for Versamark embossing is ink up your stamp with versamark then with dye ink, stamp then emboss with clear EP that way there is no need to have a bunch of colors of embossing powder taking up space.
