Default Hanging Bygel Rails for Punches

Well I finally jumped on the band wagon and purchased the bygel rails from Ikea for my punches. I can't wait to get them on the wall and put to use (just wish the space I have on the wall was in immediate reach of my work space, but they will still be more convenient than my current storage).

My Question:

There is no way to mount these rails to the studs in my walls - the positions just don't work. My dh has suggested cutting open the drywall and placing reinforcements in the wall. He's done this before, so no problem there ... BUT, his texturing needs a little work, and I really don't want a huge patch on my craft room wall.

So, to save me from dust, waiting weeks, and then the patch afterwards ...

So, long question short, have you hung these rails with drywall screws instead of mounting into the studs? Is that secure enough to hold up the rails with the weight of the punches?

LOL, Noel...sounds like my dh! Heaven knows he's saved us bundles of money over the years by doing things himself, but finish work is not his forte by any means!

Can't you just use some molly bolts? Those suckers really beef it up. Also, (although I don't know how long your rails are) put a support in the middle of the rail. That will help distribute the weight.

I saw where someone with a similar problem mounted the rails to a larger piece of plywood which they put molding around like a frame-then attached the plywood to the wall.

In our house, we have this problem A LOT. We rent an older house the studs are further apart. To solve it, we go to Home Depot and get Hollow Wall Mounts. They look like this:
http://images.hardwareandtools.com/P/u833939.jpg

First you put in the Hollow Wall Mount (the white thingy) into the drywall, avoiding a stud and then, once that is in, you put the screw in the middle of that and it holds the item in place. They are even rated for different weights (10lbs, 20lbs, 50lbs, etc), so you will probably want the heaviest ones since our punches are kind of heavy.

I can tell you from experience that these work! I have a very heavy pot rack with lots of heavy pots and pans hanging on a wall in my kitchen - not a single screw is in a stud - and it is still hanging nice and sturdy and strong!

My DH and I were just discussing this, as I was trying to decide if I wanted the long or short rods. Neither fits the standard stud distance. Those rods will be heavy once loaded up with the punches.

I'm interested to hear what others have done.

You can use dry wall anchors. They hold very well.

I used hollow wall mounts as well. I took one of the rods down to Lowes and asked the guy for help. I didn't use mine for punches, but rather the cups to hold all of my copics. But they seem pretty solid in the wall.

I agree with the other gals hollow wall mounts worked fine for me and mine are full of punches. You would think the people that make these rails would figure this out and make the rail to fit the studs...

My DH mounted 3 of the small length rails onto white board (shower board from Home Depot) and then put molding around it to "frame" it to look nice for me. I can't expand it but I don't think I'll ever need to now with Nesties taking over Here's a picture:

Thank you all for the feedback! I felt pretty certain I could use the drywall mounts ... and now I have some proper terminology to use with my dh ... and isn't a project like this perfect for mother's day weekend? He gets to go shopping for hardware and I get improvements in my craft room. Happy Mother's Day to us both! Grin. Noel

We've used hollow wall mounts for all kinds of things in our house, and to hold up things much heavier than a bar and punches! I think those will be fine. If you're looking for them in a place like Home Depot, they should be with the screws.

I have the long ones and they are filled to the brim as I also use the baskets and cups from this system. My hubby mounted them with drywall mollies and no problems! HTH!

I also use these as I aways seem to want to hang something that is "just" out of reach of the studs. The only thing I match to the studs are my adjustible shelf brackets because they have to hold so much weight.

Also, since you rent you'll be able to take them out and easily patch the wall.

I purchased the long ones the other day, am waiting to have hub hang them up because I also had the same question (and another one). Do the long rods hold up to the weight of all the larger punches, or do they bend in the middle? Am I going to also need a support of some kind, or will it be ok as is?

Mine don't bend at all. I have the smaller length for my punches though, but they are really sturdy. I have baskets on the longer length and I keep my Cuttlebug plates and other things in them and they haven't budged at all. My punches are mounted on a whiteboard - you can see the link above in post #9. My longer rails for baskets are just attached to the wall and are fine.
