Default With Design Studio do you have to have the cartridge?

I want to get design studio for my cricut but wondering, do you have to have the cart in order to cut out a particular image? Or how exactly does that work?

Thanks so much for the info. I need so many more carts but can add as I find sales. I just bought DS from ebay for $37 plus free shipping! I can't wait to try it.

I really love it to weld words together. It works awesome for that. Can weld shapes also. You will like it. For me it took some practice but now its easy. I have only about 8 carts right now, and thats plenty for me. Good luck have fun!
