I love my punches clear back to when I first started scrapbooking YEARS ago! I have quite a collection now and have a Sterlite cart with the top two drawers filled, neatly, with my punches,shhh...that way hubby doesn't see/know how addicted I'm to punches! ;)
It was punches and punch art that got me into this crazy card making business. I need to weed through many of my older outdated punches. I do love the new dies that match stamp sets. Like muscrat, there is room for both in my life.
I gave away a lot of punches. The ones I use are the Fiskars squeeze punches. Easy to store. I use my die cuts some but my Silhouette Cameo will cut everything in multiple sizes and there are so many shapes & edges to get right now for 50 cents at the Silhouette site. I can have hundreds of files on my computer that are instantly available to cut in ANY size I choose or I can edit the cuts to my liking.
Interesting thread! I know I love both punches and dies. Sometimes I'll just cut out several of whatever I have out so I can save time later. (of course, then you have to figure out where you stored them)...
I like using my punches and to the dismay of my very wonderful Stampin' up lady I won't buy the Big Shot-I just don't have the room for storage of all those wonderful dies I would just have to have! I love all the things that can be made with it, but I just have to think a bit more about what I am putting on my cards, the way I first learned! I love making and giving away cards and there are so many wonderful cards and ideas here! Thank you!
Hi....have you tried the new We Are Memories punches? I purchased a 6" one and the 8" one..they are easy to push down and you don't have to worry about aligning the edges to make it come out even....they are expensive...but easy to use....they may work easier for you with the arthritis...thanks for starting the post..i'm enjoying reading all the comments.
I love punches as well as I like my BS. Like others have said, they both have their uses. I don't buy punches with intricate designs as I've learned that they just can't do the job the way a die can handle it. Also, I don't buy off brand punches or thumb punches as they rarely cut cardstock or make a clean edge. I stick with SU, McGill, or Martha Stewart. I also have found that if SU or McGill punches do not perform I can easily get a replacement from the company.
I used to have a Cricuit Expression and I gave it and all my dies away. It was too much of a bother. Grabbing a punch or running it through the BS is so much easier.

I would start with Pinterest and search on punches. Many examples and tutorials should come up.
Yes, I still buy punches even tough I have thousands (not a typo) of dies, 5 electronic cutters, and 4 manual cutters (including a BSPro and a GrandeMark).
A punch is just so quick and easy, especially when punching out a stamped/printed image.

I reach for my 'standard' punches all the time (hearts, circles, squares, borders) but have quite a few other shapes that are gathering dust...right along with my decorative-edge scissors!
I use both - I love my Cuttlebug and dies for thicker card stock and all the wonderful shapes, and the gradations of the Nestabilities, but I also love my punches. And punches are definitely not dead - the 52 Christmas Card Throwdown blog just put up a new challenge to make a Christmas card using punches.

This girl has some amazingly cute stuff on her blog. She does sell some tutorials, but if you scroll down a little bit, she has a LOT of free tutorials also!!
As far as trying to make up your own ideas - just take the item you want to make & try to break it down into it's basic shapes -- circles, ovals, teardrops, etc - instead of looking at that entire turkey as one image, "chop him up" mentally into all his separate shapes, and you should be able to come up with a way to make him out of your punches!
I have both and use both. I think each has good and bad points. I love the thick dies that will cut things that a punch or thin die won't go thru. But I also love having a set of dies where I can choose a size. I tend to use my punches more for punching out a sentiment.
I love the ease of punches, but since I have limited myself to one drawer, they are not always any easier to use in my situation than the die cuts as my CB sits out nearly all the time and my dies are all kept on magnets in clear photo pages in a binder that are easy to find, use and replace. However, I have my favorite "utility" punches in that drawer---word window, modern label, small circles, squares, corner rounder and a couple edgers. I also have several snowflakes and flowers that I would gladly give up if I could find a die cut to replace them as they store so much better. I think there will always be a niche for both in the world of crafters.
I have wheelbarrows full of punches...really, however, I dont store them that way...yet. I love punches I will continue to buy them. I also have a Big Shot, Cuttlebug and Slice, oh and Cameo. When I am mass producing I will cut a LOT out with my Cameo. I have 4 mats I use now and 4 in reserve. It is great for cutting a lot of items quickly.
I love my dies and punches and use them all often.

Hmm I LOVE my punches, and I love my cameo, and I love my vagabond, and I LOVE my grandemark.... ha ha I guess that's saying I wont be ditching my punches because I have my die cutters... it all depends on my mood (to be honest my poor cameo gets neglected and I have tons of files I really should use.)
