I've been contemplating buying a Silhouette machine since I've heard that you can download the images from your computer for cutting. For the Silhouette owners, can you please give me reviews of how you like your machine? I have a personal Cricut that I NEVER use b/c I can't find any cartridges that I like enough to pay for so I'm hoping that the Silhouette would allow me to download svg files that I like. Any suggestions or ideas? Also, can anyone tell me who has the best prices for a Silhouette?
I love my Silhouette. I have one of the first Cricut's, but just like you I found I didn't want to spend the money for the catridges. There would be some images on a cartridge that I liked, but not all of them so the cost for the images seemed rather high. I love the fact that I can download an image for the Silhouette for 99 cents, 75 when on sale. I don't have to wait for a store to open, or hope that they have what I want, anytime of day I can connect to the internet and Silhouette store and purchase what I want. There are so many possibilities with the Silhouette, you can create your own designs, or use a design you purchase and use a portion of it, size it, or modify it. I love the print and cut feature, for example I had shower invites to do. I typed up the wording, used the print feature with registration marks. Then put the frame around the wording on the screen, loaded the printed paper and it cut around the wording. Love it!
I've had a Silhouette for a year and a half maybe and LOVE it. I don't use it all the time, but when I do I'm glad I have it. I make cards mostly. If I scrapped or made more altered items it would get more use. I love that Silhouette now has a free weekly shape and most of their downloads are just 99 cents.
I have an original Silhouette and I love it. WHen I first bought the machine I thought that I would just find free files from the internet but their store is so easy to use and I got a great deal on a subscription so I buy most of my shapes there.
I would like to add that one reason I am such a huge fan of Silhouette (the company) is because their customer service is amazing. I've written a few times with different questions and they have always been quick to answer and very helpful.
I'm sorry that I don't have any suggestions on where to buy one.
There is a new machine, the Silhouette Cameo, that is should be in stores the end of October. It will do 12x12. Depending on how you look at it, you can either get a great deal on the old machine because the new one is coming out, or purchase the new one.
Hi, can someone please tell me what type of file the Silhouette handles, is it SVG or another type. I saw a wonderful book at M's using the silhouette. I have a Cricut and can't afford to buy another machine. Thanks for your help.
I have the Silhouette, and have had it for about four years now. Absolutely fantastic machine, probably the best money I ever spent. The Silhouette actually uses GSD files, but SVG can be converted to GSD, I think that a program called INKSCAPE ( available on the net as a free download) will do this. Somewhere else you may like to look at, for information, and ,when you have made a certain number of posts as a forum member, the ability to download for free files put up by other users, is: UKSCRAPPERS
Completely agree with the previous poster, their customer service is fantastic.
I LOVE my Silhouette machine! I have a Cricut E2 and it's nice but it doesn't compare to my Silhouette! I love not having to buy cartridges, if I need a shape I can just hop on line and get it right away, no waiting. Plus it's easy to convert SVG's using Inkscape and it cuts all true type fonts as well.
Overstock.com had a really great price on the SD awhile ago not sure if they still do but it's worth a look.
Thanks so much for the info. I have Inkscape and I think I can do the conversion from GSD to SVG. I really appreciate the help. Now, off to M's to purchase the book. Thanks again.
Thank you for all the feedback!! This is awesome, I'm now convinced that I need a Silhouette! I'll be sure to make note of the forum and program. Maybe DH will agree to get me one for Christmas... ;)
I believe that they are discontinuing the SD and replacing it with the Cameo. I purchased the Cameo a couple of weeks ago and I LOVE it. The setup was quick and easy and the software is relatively easy to use. I purchased mine through Craft-E Corner and I paid $255 for it with free shipping. I have seen the Silhouette SD through Amazon for $220.
WoW! You only paid $155? Thats an incredible deal!
Right now Craft-E Corner is pre-selling them for $269.00. Maybe I will get lucky like you and find a good deal!

LOVE my Silhouette. I have an older Cricut that I used maybe twice but I use the Silhouette all the time. It is so easy and love buying individual shapes instead of cartridges!
