The size of the circles is different. Makes for better framing when you have the companion. The nesting circles are farther apart, so when you go to
make a frame, it is just too big.

The nested circle has grooves for cutting circles that are 1/4" apart. So if you cut one and then cut the next larger you get a 1/4" matt. The companion has grooves that are also 1/4" apart but they fit between the regular nested circle sizes such that if you cut a circle with one you can use the other one to cut a matt that is 1/8" larger.
