Default Colored Pencil Blender

Last week I bought a colored pencil blender to try out on Prismas. It works wonderfully. Just thought I would share the information about it. It says "Formulated to blend wax based colored pencils" The brand is National and it says "conforms to ASTM D4236". It is dual tipped just like a blending pen (Dove Blender). It has a long brush like tip on one end (great for covering large areas) and a fine point tip on the other (great for small areas). I didn't notice any odor or have a reaction to it and I am very chemical sensitive. I bought it at Michaels and it was under $3.00 or right at that amount. I can't remember the exact amount and can't find the receipt. It was over in the art section with the Prismas. It is clear and then you can see the white barrel inside that contains the "secret ingredient" . I say secret because I couldn't find any mention of what it contained other than the astm number. Manufactured by International Trading Partners, Kansas City, MO. Much easier than the gamsol and stump method, but just as effective and it seemed to take less effort to start the blending action so less finessing to get a shaded appearance. I also experimented and tried blending metallics it lost it's metallic appearance, but the same thing happened using the Prisma blending pencil, so no big deal. I don't use the metallics much anyway.

Hmmm. Thanks for sharing this. With the cost so low, it couldn't help to try it out! One more way to use the Prismas.

Again,TFS

Thanks for sharing. I am going to look for one the next time I am at Michael's.

I am having trouble with this pen, I find it bleeds the black ink, even black Stazon. Any advice? Do I need to heat-set the black first or wait longer before coloring?

Hmmm, I had this happen, too, but I thought it was because I used black chalk ink. I didn't let it set up either, went right to coloring. Might not be as good as I thought it was.

have you tried the Prisma colorless blending pencil? i think it is pretty amazing... I'm asthmatic so I have to limit my use of OMS to "must-use" times... they sell this pencil at Michael's/HL/art stores in the same bins as the single ones - I think same price as a single pencil

I tried this one, but found it didn't really blend at all!! Am I using it wrong?
Or does the paper used make a big difference?

I would imagine that paper makes a BIG difference. I tried OMS and gamsol on cheap cs vs. SU whisper white and the difference in how the colour moved on the paper was huge!!

The colorless blender pencil is meant to be used with pressure to blend the layers of pigment together. You have to lay down the majority of the pigment that you will need on the design and then use the blender, with pressure, to blend together the layers - it will blend the pencil lines and enhance the depth of color of the pigment - and if you have layered say a blue over a yellow it will blend the pigments together to make green.

I haven't tried it on SU smooth paper but I suspect that it works best on an art paper with a bit of tooth (which is my preference for my colored pencil designs), and you do need to be careful not to use too much pressure or you will be unable to add any more pigment over top.

I just tried the National Colored Pencil Blender pen last week and compared it to using Gamsol. The National blender pen left the pencil with a semi gloss finish versus the Gamsol with a matte finish. I preferred the National blender and will have to stock up on them. Just can't find them in the stores right now. Anyone have a good source to order them?

I have found the same thing, only it hasn't happened every time, but I am not sure what I did differently??? If others have found a solution, I would love to know too...

I just found in a Papercraft magazine that they suggest coloring onto a separate piece of paper and then use the blender pen to pick up the color, then transfer it to your image. Don't know if that will help?
