Hi! I found using the metal shim with Cheery Lynn, Memory Box and Marianne Creatables dies to be VERY helpful! give them a nice clean cut especially since so many of them are so intricate. My cutting plates are quite warped and scarred from frequent use so this metal shim gave a flat surface needed for these dies and it gave a good cutting surface....for me, it was well worth the investment in the metal shim.
Good luck!

I don't have one and get perfect cuts all the time. Try without before buying a shim. I LOVE these dies and certainly wish it was in my budget to get ALL of them!
I use a Cuttlebug, not a Big Shot, and the metal plate is a necessity for the CB. They offer the plates for the Big Shot as well, but the product description imply that they are needed only for the larger dies.
According to the Cheery Lynn website, for the CB they recommend putting the back of the die against the metal plate. I would assume it would be the same for the BS.

Okay so I should have watched the video closer on Cheery Lynn's site - I used the adapter metal plate face up to the cutting side of the die. LOLOL when all else fails, read the instructions! lolol I got a beautiful cut with the die cutting side against the metal plate - I will need to try it the way that they suggest...but I do like the cut the way that I used it.

I would expect it to work cutting against the metal plate, too, but for me, I try to avoid messing up the more expensive/harder to replace plates, and try to make sure I always cut against the easily replaced/cheaper plates, which for the CB is the B plate.

Yes, threads like this are very startling. A while back there was one that said Tim Holtz dies... I thought OMG he was so young and talented.
wow, isn't that interesting how our minds work so differently. i guess i think about crafts almost 24/7 so when i see anything within the crafting realm i automatically assume it's a crafting product. it would never occur to me it was "dies" as in pass away. that must have hurt your heart before you realized what they were talking about. (it would mine, i love tim holtz).
is cheery lynn an actual person? i guess it's not all that funny then. i thought it was a brand name like stampin up or addicted to rubber stamps, etc.
i gave a preschooler a test one time and asked him what is the plural of mouse ( expecting him to say mice of course) and he thought and thought and finally said - "Well, we call them rats." True story, lol.
I LOVE using these dies, and I do have the metal shim (and a Cuttlebug). I see on their site that they now have a metal shim for the Big Shot, so these 2 shims must be different thicknesses. For those wondering about Cheery Lynn, check out these gorgeous dies: Cheery Lynn Designs: Our Magical Dies work in your favorite table-top machine
And if you like butterflies, they have the most gorgeous ones I've seen!
The shim goes under the die, with the die face up. I have some of the intricate butterfly dies, and by using the shim, they pop right out of the die; to get rid of any paper remnants in the die, I just bang it against my work area and they fall out.
Also, slight hijack here: someone on SCS recommended using wax paper on the Marianne dies before cutting. I did and it works like a dream. I then used wax paper on the Cheery Lynn dies - it didn't seem to make any difference with these.

I use wax paper with all of my intricate dies. Makes getting all the small parts and pieces A LOT easier to get out of the dies. And keeps from tearing the cut out up trying to get it out of the die.
