First you need to decide what you will be cutting. That will determine if the flat metal dies like Spellbinders or Sizzlets will be OK. Otherwise, if you need to cut through anything, then you will need to look more at the Sizzix BigZ type dies that have a metal cutting edge. I personally have the SU BigZ Beautiful Butterflies and the two offered by PTI. I also use my Martha Stewart punches as well.
I would buy one of the thick Sizzix dies. They cut a TON of stuff!
Here's a link to the Sizzix Butterfly dies page: Butterflies
Some of those listed above are the Sizzlits that only cut paper/cardstock, so check and make sure you're getting the thicker dies (Originals, Bigz, BigzXL, and Big Shot Pro dies) if you want to cut more stuff .

I bought the SU butterfly because they have a lot of stamps that can be used with it too. Then I have the Beautiful Wings embosslit that cuts about five different size butterflies at once. I think it's on Page 215 in the SU catalog, but not sure since the catalog is in another room.
Does anyone have an opinion of the Spellbinders butterfly die? It seems like it might be the next closest to the Marianne one that is so hard to come by.

I love, love, love the embosslit by SU called Beautiful Wings. It cuts out five butterflies from small to large...each a different size with different embossing on each...so wonderful and versatile!

I have butterflies two and flying beauties and I love them, they are so pretty plus you can emboss and stencil (this looks really good). They were my first set of spellbinders.
I have the Spellbinders butterfly dies, Marienne Dies (all the butterflies) and some sizzlets and the SU butterfly dies (I think there is a Big Z and sizzlet one) I am nuts for butterfly stuff and use them all. I like them all for different reasons and different moods...Oh I forgot I have all MS die punches as well...I am so hopeless....
blessings.
My faves are the Marianne Creatables. You might be able to find one at Ecstasy Crafts: Dies - Metal Cutting & Embossing Prickly Pear has a die with a matching set of stamps. Joy Crafts (import) has a set of three smaller butterflies. Nellie Snellen has a punch with a separate embosser---makes a small butterfly so frequently used on cards.
