Wow I can't believe it's been 4 years. I didn't mean any harm to SU or the people who love the ink pads. I just don't like them and use another brand. I still like my cards and all your cards and I still have fun stamping.

I am a rubber so my stamp pads fray but I know why they fray so I can either change how I do my inking or deal with it. Sorry that yours are bad, have you tried reinking the ones that cave in, I read somewhere that that is why they cave in. Not sure if that is true but I am passing on what I heard.

I'm not going to boycott them. I HATE the way the new style pads sag, but I like the new colors, so I am kinda stuck. If SU gave a choice in the catty of new style or old style, I would buy the old style. As for sagging due to insufficient ink, ahhhh NO WAY, they sag because that is how they are designed, support on the edges and none on the middle. I have 48 old style pads that I have only re-inked the black and none of the sag. I bought all 48 of the new style pads, plus the basic brown and all of the in-colors and every single one of them sag. I don't stamp and twist, that is silly - to have to compensate for a poor design, I grab my old pads whenever I can!!! Just my review from using the pads for a few years now.

I agree Karen. Mine sagged from very first use.

Yeah, I think there are two possible things going on. If your pad is getting dry, the edges start to curve up, making it look like the center is sagging. In that case, just reink around the perimeter. But, then there is the sagging in the middle after some use. I've heard brayering might help, but it's definitely the fact that there's no support under the center of the pad. But if it looks to be sagging when you first get it, that should be from needing ink, as it hasn't had any pressure yet to make it sag.

I tend to stamp my larger stamps half off the sides until it's covered, when I have a sagging pad. I like Julie's suggestion about the cardboard, but it would be a hassle unless I was using one inkpad for awhile. But since I'm only a hobby demo, that doesn't happen too much.

Mine have not done either of the things mentioned. I tap and I don't just use the middle of the pad. I think that must help...

I have to agree with some of you ladies regarding this issue. Seriously, I think the ink pads have a great design, but that dip in the middle drives me crazy. When I demo the pads, I have to compensate for this design flaw and hope no one asks me a question that I would be morally bound to answer.

I know many of you swear that the dip is caused by lack of ink. If that's the case, then SU sends out drying pads. I opened my Handsome Hunter yesterday and was disturbed by the dip.

Well last night, I made a chipboard contraption to put under the ink pad. I open the pad, place the chipboard square in the bottom, then I slid the pad back - works great, fits good, and helps with even stamping.

Is the chipboard a preventative or a corrective measure?

I love the craft spots. Very iffy about the Classic pads...So glad I did not invest in the whole deal. The craft spots are fine. They have stronger color and if you use one to the max., just get a reinker..... I have classic pads, and no matter how dry they are, the reinker just never does it.

I like my SU pads for the most part, I do have the frayed edges and just trim them and I did have an issue with the caved in area on my black stamp pad and I thought it was just because it was in need of a re-inking which did seem to help.
I do have an issue though with why my ink pads, they seem to be a little to dry if they aren't a color that I use everyday.
I need to remember to ask my demo about this.

OK question... what is the best way to store SU ink pads i have heard the upside down is the best so ink stays on the pads is that true? also i had a fight with one of my pads wheni first got it i opened it and the lid went flying off no lie i tried for 2 hrs to figure out how to get it back on well after very covered ink hands and very messy ink pad i called my g/f and she laughed at me and told me how to do it.Duh silly me....and i only have blonde highlights( NO OFFENSE TO BLONDES) ALSO question 2 how the heck do i get ink to give the smooth look on solid stamps it always seems that it is blotchy even if i tap and rub? all replies welcomed lol.. Also when can a person be no longer considered a newbie at stampin? been doing it since OCT lol

The regular sized pads ARE upside when you close them. The spots are up for debate. There were some instances of leaking and if you have a stray thread hanging out, it will leak. I store mine upside down, both classic and craft. HTH

Dawn:

About the splotchiness w/ solid stamps, I know I have read here to rub new stamps over something to eliminate the residue from the stamps. Several gals mentioned they just lightly run the stamp over their jeans prior to stamping.

Old style SU pads needed to be stored upside down, new style are engineered to basically flip them for you -- so container right side up.

This thread has been going on for a long time. Has anyone had any response from SU? It seems to be that whenever a problem is reporting like this (white cardstock too) the answer is always "oh, really, we haven't heard of any problems." Not bashing SU, but how do products get improved if no one listens?

I almost always lightly sand my stamps with fine sandpaper, particularly large, bold, or background stamps. Another hint I was told was to Versamark them, leave overnight, and then clean and they do really take the ink better.

I don't know if anyone has said this and I'm not reading the whole thread to find out. I discovered a remedy for the sunken middles of the ink pads. I was getting frustrated trying to ink up my Star of Wonder stamp a couple of years ago for my Christmas cards. I needed to make 100 cards and it was taking forever to get the middle of the stamp inked. This idea popped into my head, and it really works!

Cut a couple of small rectangles of cardboard (not chipboard, cardboard), just slightly smaller than the inside of your ink pad lid. I had my DH cut me quite a few so I could use more than one pad at a time. Open the ink pad, but before you slide the pad over the lid to begin stamping, just insert two of the cardboard pieces into the lid and slide the pad over them. The cardboard supports the center of the pad. When you're ready to stop stamping, just remove the cardboard from the lid and store it until you need it next.

I also agree with other posters that the main cause of fraying is rubbing the stamp on the pad instead of tapping. I've really only had problems with fraying on my Basic Black pad and of course it's been used almost to death by me and my customers.

Default I agree jeaniebean55

Well, I know most people aren't agreeing with you jeaniebean55, but I certainly do! I am not boycotting SU, but I refuse to buy any of the new inkpads. I bought all the old classic pads and I have all the craft spots. For any new colors they come up with, I am now using reinkers and the comotion ink pads that can be found at addictedtorubberstamps.com (Thanks annabelle1974 !). These ink pads are the ones that SU originally used and sometimes you can find them for $1 on ATRS when they have a sale. Sometimes, you have to call them on the phone to order them. Anyway, I have never had a problem with the old style pads and I've had them since 1999! So far, this has worked for me and I too am hoping for a redesign of the new pads. It seems like it would be simple to engineer a platform to put under the pad to support it structurally, kind of like what some people on this site have done with chipboard or cardboard. Until then, reinkers and comotion ink pads for me!

Lightbulb make your own SU ink pads

I personally prefer foam (Tsukineko) to the fabric pads. If you like the SU colors, but not the pads, I would recommend purchasing uninked pads of the style you like, if they are available, and filling them up with the SU ink.

That's okay Iheartstamping. Your idea was a little different than mine so it was still a bright idea.
I will have to try the foam pads, but I always thought that felt was for dye ink, foam was for pigment ink. Not sure why it would make a difference but that's what I remember reading a while back on SCS. Of course, I could be remembering wrong.

Hello,
I do like the inkpads for the most part. I did manage to get a good slice on my finger when opening it one time. Didn't need stitches but put a hinder on my stamping. I also have opened them before to have the lid go flying off in another direction but I adapt and try to be careful.
Thanks,
michelle

I love the colors but hate the pads. I just buy blank pads and fill them with reinker and I am happy!
