Why would anyone need the extended one?

There are some dies (for borders usually...maybe for scrapbooking 12x12) that are really long that you need to use the extended platform.

The PnC and BigzXL dies don't need the extended platform, they just need extended cutting pads.

Before you buy the extended platform, make sure what you need isn't just extended cutting pads.

That said, the extended platform is a good tool to have on hand so you're ready to use all sorts of dies!

TheOtherMeg, Are you saying that the extended cutting plates work ok with the standard platform??? That would save a few bucks.....

What I meant was, for the longer thick dies, you don't even need a platform. The sandwich for the thick dies (no matter their length) is cutting plate, die, paper, cutting plate. So, in the case of PnC and BigzXL dies, you don't need the extended platform.

If you intend to use long wafer-thin dies, Decorative Strips, and that sort of thing, you will need an extended platform. Sizzix used to sell on just for Decorative Strips, but I don't know if that's still available. Even if it is, the extended platform or extended multipurpose platform give you more options.
