This thread has a lot of great information! Thanks to everyone who is contributing info. It can be confusing for some people with so many options available.
I've had my oldest ATG since around 1995. It's yellow and I don't think they even make this color anymore. I use a really thick refill in this one (almost 1/2" I think). I also bought the pink one because well, I just had to have the pink one.
I wouldn't go to a crop without these tools...I use them constantly!
Thanks for the links to reorder...I'll need to order refills soon!
Has anyone replaced a roll of tape to find out the glue was on wrong side? LOL I thought I had reloading my pink atg down pretty good...winding away and noticed..wheres the glue? Got the directions out...thought I was doing it wrong..nope...it was backwards! Oh well..glad I had some more refills!

If it is 3M tape and you still have the packaging I would contact them direct. I haven't had it happen though.

That's happened to me a few times. Here's how I fixed it. (I know I read how to do this on SCS, but I can't remember who posted it originally. Sorry I can't give proper credit to her.) Anyway, what you do is squeeze the roll from the outside edges. Work your way around the roll, and that should make the adhesive stick to the correct side of the release paper. I hope it works for you.

If you phone 3M, they'll walk you through fixing it so it rolls properly.
Thanks ladies! I got it figured out! The plaid tape in beginning of roll was stuck to another plaid strip? ....makes sense? Anyway I was just assuming it was a mistake ...but after reading replies here I played around with it and pulled the two strips apart and when it got to glue part it was on right side, Go figure! LOL
Thank you all for the information in this post! I had just bought a xyron mega runner beause the ATG dispenser squeeks and the tape hangs off of the end of the roller. I found 2 fixes for fixing the position of the tape and maybe it will also keep the dispenser from squeeking! I think I will take back the mega runner. Besides the refills were really expensive and I also found all the information for cheaper refills for the ATG!
Has anyone else noticed you cant find the atg refills that are not acid free at Michaels? I used to buy them @ $5.99 with a 40 %. Now I can only find Acid free. I did order from the Tape Depot and the service was great.. Got here faster then predicted. I just loaded a roll into my gun and haven't used it yet. Seems good and sticky!!

Reason: spelling errors
I've had my ATG for a month or so now. I thought it was doing fine, but I just pulled out a batch of cards to send out (I sell cards on Etsy) and noticed that many of them are pulling apart. Aargghhh!
I'm using the 3M/Scotch 1/4" acid-free (just realized that as I looked at the package. I don't need acid-free!). Is the non-acid-free stickier? Or is there another brand that works better?

I'm also using the Scotch acid-free ATG refills and have not noticed any issues. To improve the adhesion, it might help to burnish the taped areas, if you're not already doing that. I use a Teflon bone folder to press the layers together and have not had any problems with them separating later.
You can do your own test. Stick two scrap pieces of cardstock together with some ATG tape. Burnish half of the taped line with a bone folder, then try to separate the cardstock. The layers should be much harder to pull apart where you've applied the extra pressure.

I've been using this ATG tape from Tape Depot for several years, and have never had it come apart. Here is a link for 12 rolls for a good price with free shipping:
Think I read there was a bad batch of tape a while ago. However, I would definitely burnish or depending on depth of the card send it through a die cutting machine (Cuttlebug) with just the plates (and the spellbinders embossing mat if you have it) for extra pressure - I have done this if I have a card that is trying to warp and it works.
I burnished with my fingers (does that still count as burnishing? LOL) but I'll try the bone folder to see if that helps. I used Tombow mono multi in the past and it works like a charm but I was hoping the ATG would cut it as it's faster and neater since its a dry adhesive.
Thanks for the link for Tape Depot too. I'll check them out!

Thank you everyone for all of the wonderful information. It's good to know that it stays stuck over time. I read through this entire thread trying to find that information.
My questions are mainly for those of you who have been using the tape from Tape Depot for several years.
1. Do you use it in scrap booking?
2. Do you burnish it to help it stick?
3. I'm also wondering if it turns yellow over time?

1. I don't scrapbook, but make cards and other papercraft items, like boxes.
2. I don't use a bone folder to burnish, but press it pretty firmly with my fingers.
3. I don't think it yellows, but can't really tell, since it's hidden between the layers when I use it. I buy it 12 rolls at a time and it's in sealed packages that seem to keep well.

I've used the Tape Depot tape in scrapbooking (the acid-free version), and I haven't had any problems with it yellowing or not sticking over time. I don't burnish it, but I do give ti a firm press when I'm sure of placement.

I also buy the 1/2" and 1/4" tape from National Hardware Sales in Toronto - it's the best price that I have found and I order 12 rolls at a time. I have both the pink and the yellow gun and I will never use anything else!
OK, I have read through this entire sticky thread and know where to buy refills and reload my pink Scotch ATG. However, I do not have answers to much more basic questions on the ATG, and I am hoping this community can help me. I am desperate because I am making 125 invitations for my niece's wedding, and there are many components that need adhesive. I am almost about to buy 20 refills for my tape runner and bag the ATG altogether. Here is what is happening:
*I get blobs of adhesive at the beginning and the end of lines
* I can't seem to line up the adhesive to the end - it comes in about half an inch and angles even more toward the center
* Sometimes the adhesive doesn't release and the entire line pulls up, and then blobs even more
* I tried angling the ATG to be perpendicular, and I also angled it way down to be nearly parallel, but still have these problems. Not sure which is the right way to do it.

Can you help out a frustrated ATG novice?
I think there are good rolls and bad rolls of the glue.
For the most part, if you need smooth performance, be sure to spend the extra and buy the Gold.
I don't because I am cheap! But, I have found that with practice, I can get it rolling pretty good. Unfortunately, there is a learning curve.
Any cards you can practice on before the important ones??
Hi, Bugga! Just to make sure . . . The Tape Depot refills fit the pink ATG, right? Since there are no returns, I don't want to misunderstand! Thx. Cheryl

Yes, here is a current link on ebay for the tape. It will absolutely fit the pink ATG:
I have the pink ATG gun and here is my problem. The tape wheel on the right won't wind the tape. I don't think it is locking. Anyone else have this issue? It's a pain!!
My tape slides off when using oftentimes. It is put on correctly but if I don't put pressure on it just right while using the tape starts slipping off both wheels. I've gone through pages of this thread but so far haven't see this problem addressed. What am I doing wrong?
the only time I have had to tape slip off the wheel is when I have not used the internal black locking piece on the right wheel. I have also manually tightened the tape after inserting it in the slot so that it rest firmly but not tightly over the top of the tape on the Left wheel. HTH

I don't know I would call 3M they have been very helpful to people in the past.

Dottie, here is a tip from one of our members that fixes that problem. Try it, it works:
My friends and sisters all have the pink ATG714 we also purchase the tape refills from Tape Depot. I normally but 144 rolls at a time...I know that is a lot but there are about 10 of us that use that tape. I think it is great tape and I use a LOT of it.
blessings.
Searched online and tried the tapes from a few vendors. I tend to buy in larger quantities to get discounts on price and shipping. This is what I learned based on a 24 roll purchase (1/4" x 36yd roll):
My Favorite: findtape.com sells JVCC ATG-7502 ATG Tape (Acid Neutral) ... They sell them at a VERY inexpensive $1.55 per roll, but it comes out to $1.92 per roll when I included shipping ... the price went down as I bought more (additional cases went down to about $1.70 per roll)
Another inexpensive alternative: Tape Jungle (tapejungle.com) ATG-7502 sells the 24 roll case for $49.92 with free shipping. Comes out to about $2.08 per roll.
Then I looked at based on others' recommendations:
Tape Depot (thetapedepot.com) sells the JVCC ATG-7502 ATG Tape is comparable findtape.com, but to get the free shipping and keep the price per roll down, you have to spend a minimum of $50 - which means buying 3 cases (36 rolls). Needless to say, it still comes in at about $1.95 per roll.
I bought tape at all 3 and found that there was no huge difference in terms of service. So I went by price with findtape.com ... good luck and hope this helps!

Wow! Thanks!
Is 1/4" the correct size for the Pink ATG that Michaels sells?

Great info. It also depends on where you live. The findtape.com comes out to $2.18 per roll with shipping. I'm on the East Coast. Looks like I may switch from the Tape Depot to Tape Jungle. Thanks, I need to put in another order soon.
