are oderless mineral spirits the same as "oderless turpentine alternative" or "oderless thinner"?
Theoretically, yes...but in actuality no. I was using turpenoid with Lyra pencils and was having trouble with the layering. I bought some gamsol and used it with the Lyras and it is better...but then I also went and bought the Prismacolor pencils and it is fabulous.
One of the instructors told me that the bases are different in gamsol and turnpenoid and that could account for it
I know a lot of you use Gamsol, can you Please tell me what it is and where to find it??? I have looked in the art depatment and stamping department at HL and cannot find it.
Gamsol is an oderless mineral spirit. I have not used it yet so someone else will have to tell you about why and how they use it. I think there is a tutorial right here at SCS for it. The only place that I could find it was at my local Art store. I think there is a place on-line that sells it but I do not have the web site.
I believe Gamsol is a brand name, not the name of the product. The product is odorless mineral spirits. Maybe that will help you! I have read that the other brands work, just not as well as Gamsol. To use it they usually use Prismacolor (another brand) colored pencils, which are artist quality. And also stumps, which are for blending the colors.
you can also get it at dickblick.com, it's cheaper there. I was going to order from inky antics but they are charge for (I think) 2 oz. what dick blick charges for around 16oz or something like that. The thing inky antics puts it in is just a bingo marker. I got a pack of small containers meant for holding paint from dick blick for $2 and some change and use one to pour some of the gamsol in and it has a tight lid. I don't throw it across the room or anything but I have knocked it over and it was fine.
I was in Michaels looking for Gamsol and they had no idea what it OR ordorless mineral spirts were  So I was lucky enough to find an art teacher (and artist) in the paint isle and asked her. I showed her my print out from the tutorial and she brought me over to some odorless paint thinner. She said they will sometimes call it an odorless or low oder paint thinner but it's the same thing. I have used it and actually find I like it a little better than the Gamsol. Just seems smoother.
Here's Cecilia's (princessink) tutorial on Gamsol Magic. Check out her gallery, her coloring is amazing!
Yes I did go to the tutorial on Gamsol, it helped a lot and Thank You for the information on it where to get it and all, now I can try my hand at it.
Thank You again, RagDoll4You
I know this is a stupid question, but here it goes...
I've been looking for Gamasol to try the Gamasol coloring technique, but I cant find it anywhere! Is Gamasol a brand name or is it just a general name like turpentine? I know in the resources page it says that you can use other mineral spirits, but what the heck is a mineral spirit? Oi!
Gamsol is just a brand name of 'odorless mineral spirits' which are found in any art supply store. I use a another brand name called Grumbacher which I bought at Michaels and it works great with my wax Prisma pencils. Good luck and have fun!
I have read the threads, I get the idea of what gamsol is. I just don't understand how you mix the two items together to color with. I am new to all these techniques. I usually stick to basics, but am finding new techniques fun to do.

You don't mix them in a bottle or anything - you pencil on your stamped image on the paper, then use a paper stump, or some absorbent type of "stick" which becomes like a paintbrush dipped in the Gamsol - then you go over the penciled paper with it.
Ok, I just finished using Gamsol and really like the results I got! My question is this....the nib of my stump is all flat, fuzzy and distorted....do I sharpen it like a pencil, do I snip off the end....how to I get a nice point again like i had before?? THANKS!!!
