Default Tumbled tiles & pastels question

Hi, I'm new here, so I appologize if the answer has been posted here before.

What I'm wondering is how you get such vibrant and deep colors when using the stampin' pastels (chalk) on your tiles? Tell me what I'm doing wrong:

First I stamp the image in black staz-on, then bake at 350 for 25 minutes. Then I "attempt" to color the image in with q-tips and the chalks, but the chalk does not seem to even color the tile at all. I tried using a blender pen to apply the chalk and that didn't work either. I just bought a 24 pack of colored sharpies and figured I'd just give my images BOLD color that way. But I'm not sure how that's going to work out either since I don't think they will blend too well.

Please, I'm begging for help. I LOVE the tile coasters and I want them to look good!

Thank you for any tips!!!
Kimmie

You're not using glazed tiles, right? If not, then you just grind the chalks into the tiles. When you use pastels on cardstock it just takes a light touch, but on the tiles you have to get a bit more aggressive. I don't like Q-tips for chalks--the cotton "unravels" and makes them hard to use. I like cotton tip makeup applicators--they're pointy on one end and flat on the other--they stay together and, for me, are the ideal shape for chalking.

That all said, there will be some places on your tiles that just won't take the chalk well, like they're too smooth. But they take enough to blend in with the overall design. I also wash and dry my tiles before using them to get rid of the marble dust and free up those tiny crack and pits for chalk. FYI--I don't bother to bake mine and have never had any problems, even when sealing with spray sealer.

No, I'm not using glazed tiles, just the regular tumbled tiles from Lowes. I think I will try using the make-up applicators, that sounds more practical! Thanks for the tips, I hope I get some free time to play around! ("It's nap time, baby!" - ALL day!!)

Thanks!

I just wanted to add that if you'll look up in the blue title bar and click on "Search", you can perform an "Advanced Search" and input what it is you are seeking, and even specify which forums, such as "Techniques" that you wish it to search within--or you can have it search ALL forums.

This is a WONDERFULLY POWERFUL Search Engine here at SCS that will lead you to the numerous threads posted on this topic that will help you!!!

I love that search engine MUCHLY, I tell ya'!

Here's a couple of tiles done using versamark with pastels on tiles, with instructions:

Hope that helps.

Like someone mentioned, I just stamped my tumbled tiles with stazon, then used my versamark pen and "colored" the areas that I wanted to chalk, then put the chalks on. It worked great. Then I did bake at 300 for 20 minutes. After they cooled, I sprayed with matte fixative. HTH
