Hey there...I'm making a card with 3 panels...with a layered panel behind, and I'm having quite the time trying to figure out how wide to make the top and bottom panel so its even all around. Is there a trick to getting the panels even? THANKS! Lisa
and also how to figure out how wide the panels should be to be evenly spaced across the width of the card. I've got so many calculations, and still not hitting it. Is it just trial and error? Thanks! (sorry...not finding the Edit button for the post, to add to the original,)
I looked at the sketch in the gallery, and even printed it out like it said. It said it would print out the right size for a card, but didn't say what size card.
The printed sketch is waaaay too small to use on a standard card (5-1/2 x 4-1/4). There would be a huge border all the way around, which I don't think you want.
I am not good at fractions except on a very simple level. That's probably why I use Nesties so much. If the Nesties won't work for a design, I just don't use that design. I also don't like to change card sizes, and most always cut a sheet of 8-1/2 x 11 cardstock in half and make 2 cards the standard size.
Sigh. Not too creative, but it makes my cardmaking go smoothly and I don't get frustrated.
I hope someone can help you figure it out.

From the sketch,,,it would appear the vertical panel on the left is 1/3 of the width of the card ( about 1 and 3/4 inches wide--maybe 1 adn 7/ while the two horizontal pieces occupy the remainder of the card front(a pproximately 3 and 1/2 inches)
the image is then stamped and matted and you could use a variety of sizes I would think.
Is that what you wanted?

just looking for general tips. If you are putting 3 panels on a card, evenly spaced, and those panels have a layer behind each one, does everyone actually measure 1/8 inch between each one, 1/8 inch for side margins, then add the total, and subtract from the total widith of the card? Then, for the layer on top of the panel on the bottom...
For instance, I love the layout of this card and I took a screenshot of it in 2008! I can't tell you how much paper I've wasted, every time I decide to attempt to make these panels one more time. LOL. Maybe it's just skill from trying over and over ...
Personally, I never get that hung up on the exact measurements....If I want a card with three panels...I create three panels and place it on the card stock...sometimes there will be space between the panels so the card base shows through...sometimes there isn't....and I never worry about it either way.

If I were trying to make the card with the three panels that you show, I would start with the three panels, rather than the mat layer. I'd choose an easy measurement to work with, like an inch wide, inch and a quarter or half. Suppose it was 1 1/4", then three panels would be 3 3/4". To allow 1/8" margin all round and in between you'd be adding 4 x 1/8", so the mat layer would need to be 1/2" wider, so in this case 4 1/4" wide, but only 1/4" taller.

If you go to the sketch challenges and look up challenge #95, then click on the icon, it will take you to a screen that has the sketch on it. Click on that one and it will put the sketch on a single sheet of paper that is the correct size for making the card. All you have to do is measure the pieces at that stage. Sometimes the sizes are a little hinky but I just adjust by 1/16 or 1/8 inch.
Lisa, like someone earlier said, #95 in the card sketches, Roxie will give you the measurements in her sample below the sketch post. Just read her description below her card example. Hope you find the help you need...............
