Default Question about Gamsol Technique

I'm sure this is somewhere on here but... Can I use Stampin' Up! Pure Color pencils with this technique? Do the colors stay vibrant like the prismacolor pencils? TIA!!

Default gamsol

i just took a class using gamsol. i like watercoloring with the ink pads better! anyway, the instructor told us it only works with the prismcolor pencils...not the watercolor ones. i came here and asked if this was true and someone said that it does work with the pure color pencils from su! i have not tried it. this store charged 1.99 for 1 ounce of gamsol and it was 1.00 per refill. the way that stuff evaporates....yikes!!! way too expensive! i also learned on here to get the nibs (or nubs??) that are made in taiwan vs. the ones made in china. i guess they blend better. have fun!!!

Jennigirl,

I love the Gamsol Magic technique and have used all kinds of color pencils. My favorite are the Prismas though. SU pencils will work fine.

You also don't have to use "gamsol" I use an oderless mineral spirit bought at Michaels. Gamsol is just a product name.

If you do a search in the threads, there are alot of tips and pointers.

HTH,

I also use the odorless mineral spirits, bought a big can for about $3-$4. Works fine, but I guess that wasn't your question was it? I do use mine with Prismacolor pencils (so worth the investment, IMO) have not tried it with SU but I did try it with a cheaper brand of pencils and it just didn't work.

Gamsol will work with any colored pencil. My preference is the Prismacolor pencils. If you are having trouble with your gamsol evaporating then go to Michael's and get a dauber bottle for $3.50. It is in the art aisle. It is a clear bottle that you can refill that has a sponge at the top. You invert the bottle and depress the sponge on something hard to push on the little stopper and this charges up the sponge with the liquid (in this case, Gamsol). The great thing about the dauber bottle is that the gamsol evaporates less because it is in the sponge and there are no spills! I've purchased my Gamsol from a local art store for only $10 for 16 oz (it was on sale). It should last me for years!!

I've had a real hard time tracking down Prismacolor pencils here in Australia, though I'm sure they, or a copmarable alternative, must be available from somewhere.

In the meantime, I've been using my daughters' regular coloured pencils and blending them with baby oil (inspired by Keri Sereika). They've turned out beautifully. I'd still like to compare with the "real" thing out of interest, just to see the difference.
