the picture under your name is the
avatar. the text that always comes up in everything you post is the
signature. a semantic, yet important distinction.
allee's directions are good. you can get to your control panel by clicking the "Welcome" next to your
name at the top of the screen. I don't know if my hugh laurie pic squeaked by because he's so hot but my avatar file is a bit larger than 80x80 (like 100x100 or so) so maybe the new and improved SCS isn't as much of a stickler on that point now. it's also only 3.5kb so maybe that's why it's okay. just try playing around with it and keep asking questions if it doesn't work. good luck!
