Default Need advice on distressing paper for pirate swap

I'm doing a pirate embellishment swap on another scrapbooking board, and my assigned project is to do four embellished double matted squares. I'm thinking that I want to something with distressed paper, but I have no clue how to do it. I've read here that distress ink is good - but what color should I get? What color cardstock should I use? I want to create sort of a "dirty map" look. Thank you for any advice you can give me!

How about using brown craft paper or a paper grocery bag? You could wad it all up and tear it, that flatten it out?

...then "dirty" up the paper by swiping the ink pad across the page...distress ink is great ( my personal fav is "Old Paper"), but caramel or any of the browns work, too, smooshing (dont you just love all these professional terms!!) chalked cotton balls works, too, for distressing or dirty-ing up an image...have fun!!

Sponging around the edges looks great too ~ I love using Close to Cocoa to distress the edges. Have fun making your items.

Check out Matey's Map pics in the gallery. A member named stampinspy posted a perfect example of what your looking for! Hope it helps!

Walnut ink spray works great. Hold about 4 inches from paper (be sure to cover area you are working in) Dragging the ink pad across works well also. I once tried a tea bag. Boil water. Pour into cup. Let cool. Squeeze and drag along paper. It looked great in one of my altered book pages.

Correction.. Sorry the card I was thinkng of was the matey's map wheel, but it was used on an Ahoy Matey card. It was posted by stampinspy on July 22 entitled Eylet Earring Pirate. Sorry for the confusion!

Don't forget to use sandpaper!!! It's my favorite for roughing up the pages.

You could also scorch/burn the edges (carefully, of course!).
