Default Mitered corners

I'm trying to figure out how to make a frame with mitered corners out of patterned paper. Is there an easy way to do this?

Try looking at this thread: Forums at Splitcoaststampers

Essentially, take whatever size is the width of your frame and measure in on one side of the longer side that size: e.g. if the width is 1/2", measure in 1/2" on the long side and draw a line from that point in a diagonal to the opposite corner, making a triangle. Cut along that line (see attached).

Make sure you match up your design on your paper; for example woodgrain: if you have the grain going up and down on the longer sides, you'd want it to do the same on the top and bottom pieces. That's the nice thing about doing frames, you can choose to match the direction of the design on the paper OR have the longer sides match each other and the top going one way and the bottom going the opposite...

Good luck!
Joan

Thanks so much, Joan, for your reply. I had found that thread, but it wasn't giving me the look I was going for. I did some playing around and figured out a way to get it done for the project I was doing. I've never uploaded any of my work to a gallery, but I'm going to start with this project.

jesslundahl,

The only other way to get even corners is to mat, but that sure takes up the paper! If you need to do several larger sizes of mats, then you'll need to use a separate piece of paper for each one:? . At least with frames, you can make several out of one piece.

Please do share so we can see what you mean.

Here's something I did for a friend's Christmas present; I made the box lid to be part of her present. First I scanned a napkin into the computer and resized it so that I could decontruct it. I also made a rectangle in Word and filled it with the Walnut fill in and printed it out in both portrait and landsape modes. Then I used the 2 sizes of swirls punches. I also used doubled sided framing tape to make it 3D. I wanted it to look like a picture in a frame. I also had to cut out some gold foil pieces to mask the incomplete mitering.

I use an old quilters technique. lay the top and side strips of paper on top of each other patterned sides facing, cut through both layers on your angle. when you turn the top piece over the miter will match exactly. I use a gridded mat and an inexpencive rotary wheel cutter I bought just for paper crafting. Use your grid on you mat to line up your strips and cut your angles.
