Help (PLEASE) with painting brads ???

Hi All..Happy SUNday!!

Am trying to use some colored brads I have on hand, and want to paint them a pearl white color ...I've tried metallic acrylic paints, liquid pearls (white) etc. and it just won't stick well enough to cover exsisting color(s)..

I even tried sanding them (Lightly) which did dull them, but still NO STICK...

Any ideas ? or if there are post(s) here, could you please point me in the right direction? Just don't have time to do a thorough search..sorry!

THANKS for any help!!

I've used Sharpies to color them, but not in white. Is there a white Sharpie or Copic?

You need a white paint pen. Sharpie does make them, and so do Marvy and EK Success, as well as other companies. You could also use white acrylic paint and dab it on top with a Q-Tip. Another option is to tap it on an embossing ink pad and emboss it with white embossing powder. You might need to mix in some Perfect Pearls or other pearlescent powder if you want a pearlescent look. HTH.

Another option is to dip the head of the brad in versamark, then embossing powder and then heat. The EP sticks really well.

Sand it, and if you are trying acrylic paint start with a very lite coat and let it dry. then repeat.
You can also try an alcohol ink, Smooch Ink, nail polish, pigment ink and embossing powder, plain pigment ink with a lite heat set in between layers.
If you have Krylon Crystal Clear you can give it a spray of that and then try almost any medium on it.

I tried the versamark, than into the white embossing powder, and it worked AWESOME!!! I also tried the S-UP white CRAFT ink, and into embossing powder (white) and this worked great also. Last, I had a hot pink nail polish and it covered excellent as well..I used two coats and didn't need a top coat to make it shiny, etc...they looked great! Gonna look for a pearl white color nailpolish and try that next time I get to the store

Better yet, buy some WHITE brads!! hahaha..but in a pinch, the above methods I tried worked for me. Hope that helps someone.

Thanks again for all the tips, hints, suggestions...appreciate it!! Off to bed, gotta be up in 4.5 hrs...wish I could retire and stay up all night crafting if I wanted to...someday I will!!

Default prime and paint

I just painted some silver brads white to look like baseball bases - I simply sprayed some primer on them and then followed up with a couple coats of acrylic paint - worked like a charm!

but what is Smooch???

Smooch is a product that comes in a little bottle that looks like a small nail polish bottle. It has a long, black, tapered top and a brush like a nail polish brush. The color comes out as a bright, shiny coat of polish. It completely covers the original color. I've used it for sparkly accents on paper and fabric. It sticks to almost everything, but I haven't tried it on metal. It can be scratched off, but won't rub off.

Look for it at independent or chain scrapbook stores. I haven't seen it at big box craft stores.

Great description! The AC MOORE in Charlotte was doing a reset and they have it. Not to mention a TON of new stuff they have never carried before like Queen & CO, Glitz Girls, a bunch of new Prima and a few other good companies.

You can also hold the brad with tweezers; use a lighter to heat the top of the brad thoroughly, then dip the brad into embossing powder. I have used this method many times with great success.

I was spraying something with some metalic hammered look paint and thought brads would be neat in that color so stuck a few in some styrofoam and let the over spray color them. They were awesome, the styrofoam worked great to keep them upright and dry and the overspray wasn't wasted.

AC Moore here in MA is now selling Nestabilities!!!!!! We also have a ton of different colors of Smooch spray. It is a bit cheaper than SU!, but of course AC Moore does not have our colors.....

Your message caught my eye since I lived in Charlotte before moving here to MA.

O.k., I am trying this tonight. Painting some silver colored brads white and some gold colored ring clippy thingies white. (I really know the names of stuff, lol.) Hoping it works. Taking the advice about the light coats of acrylic paint. I get so tired of buying the same stuff just to have different colors. Ugh! I am trying to use what I have and stop spending. Hope it works.
