Default Help with Mulberry Batik!

I spent a couple of hours last night trying to get this technique to work with no luck. No matter how I set my iron, either the embossing wouldn't lift off or the mulberry stuck to the copy paper. There are so many gorgeous samples in the gallery, I just have to figure out how to do this. Can you help?

thanks,

Darline in Nanaimo, BC

Okay, I saw your post and had to try my hand and mulberry batik and failed the same way you did - the mulberry stuck to the paper and tore off. :(

I checked Erika's blog again and she set her iron on medium, so that'll be my second attempt. Will check back...

I had the same problem of pulling it off. A lower heat setting helps. Pulling it off very slowly also helps. I think I had better luck pulling it off when it was still warm versus cooled. It's a very pretty technique, but a little tricky to do.

I failed my second attempt too. :( The iron was barely warm, but warm enough to take off the EP, but the mulberry got stuck again...

Does anyone know if this will work with used dryer sheets (Bounce)? I read somewhere that they could be a substitute for mulberry paper.

Maybe I'll be brave and try it out later!

I found the same thing--the iron kept sticking to the mulberry paper. I kept going back and reheating the sticky part, then trying to pull the copy paper away while the EP was still warm/pliable.

Okay, I tried and failed again and will now rest my case until one of the pros on here lets us in on the secret.
Maybe I'm using the wrong kind of mulberry paper? Bought it at World Market years and years ago...

Mine didn't work either. I tried clear and white powders. Finally, I just left the embossing on there, it still looked cool.

I haven't tried this but immediately thought about trying it with parchment paper. I've been wanting to try this technique but can't today. If someone else wants to give it a shot, thanks. Otherwise, I'll try it myself in a day or two and post if that works.

It's not the heat of the iron...it's the length of time. You have to keep heating it until the mulberry stops sticking to the copy paper.

What happens is that the EP melts and migrates into the copy paper. That takes a while. Keep testing it until it stops sticking...and there is no set time, because it seems to vary widely.

I usually put some paper towel down, then my piece of mulberry sandwiched in the copy paper, then another piece of paper towel. I keep ironing, then checking...if it's still sticking, it's not done.

Okay, I finally got the mulberry to un-stick from the copy paper b/c I just kept ironing it, but that also turned the embossed pattern into undistinguishable (is that a word? he he) blah. :(

So I went and bought some coffee filters and will try my luck with those... I also did the same thing as Stacey - embossed in white and just left it. Card came out really pretty.

Oh, thank you so much for responding. It never occured to me to leave it longer. While I've been waiting for some tips from the experts I tried the technique using glossy paper and alcohol instead of mulberry paper and water - I put a base colour down, then stamped and embossed in clear, then more colours. Wow! it turned out sensational. We are going to try this in my class this afternoon
