I'm going to guess that she used a piece of cardboard (chipboard, eg. cereal box) and placed that one the card front where she wanted the embossed item. I think that should keep it from embossing the rest of the card front??? You might try this on a scrap piece of cardstock first.
Mary is right. You will need about 4 sheets of chipboard the thickness of a cerealbox (or even more, you just have to try it) in the shape of what you want to emboss (this could be circles or squares or whatever......) and put in on top of the embossing folder when you are ready to use it.
It works great.
That is a really cool technique!! I'm going to have to give it a try. I clicked through to the other post linked to in that blog, and I'm not sure I'd be able to cut into my embossing folders. It is a beautiful effect, though!! I will try the chipboard technique first.
And if you're using cereal box weight cardboard, you can use Nestabilities dies for the shapes. I did find my heavier cardstock (Paper Trey Select White) worked better for this.

This works for me: Cut two identical pieces of chipboard or cereal box in shape of desired tree and stick them together. Stack A plate on bottom, folder with cardstock inside, the two pieces of chipboard and C plate on top.
You can do this with any shape you want. Whatever the shape of the chipboard, that is what is embossed. Almost magic, huh?

Thanks Bethem! This works perfectly for me as well. This is a really neat technique. A great way to expand the CB folder uses!
Thanks so much everyone - finally got it worked out - was really worried that I was more mentally challenged than I thought. It was the specific A plate folder etc that finally got through to me! Have a great Christmas.
