The "Ask Beate" question in this week newsletter was:
Mary asked: "I am wondering about a twist on sponging inside the Nestabilities - what you did always leaves a light or white border on the embossed edge. Do you have a trick for coloring just the embossed border so that it is darker than the center?" A: I usually keep the outer border white. That gives me the look of an extra layer. Sponging just the edge should be easy. You can either carefully sponge the edges, by moving your sponge at an almost 90 degree angle from the edge. Or, you can cut the next size smaller Nestabilities layer, cover the inside with that piece and then just sponge the border.
I received a couple more suggestion from fellow members that I thought I share here:
Sabknits suggested:
I wanted to share a technique for coloring just the edge of a cut out. I apply ink, either using a sponge or a marker, from the back of the piece, starting about 1/8 inch back from the edge and working toward the edge. I've found that the ink will soak into the edge and cover quite nicely. This works especially well on intricately cut pieces too. sab
Marianne has a Copic Solution:
You can also color directly onto the spellbinders die and then cut with it while it is still wet, or gently moisten the paper with a mister filled with water before you run it through the machine.
I have done it with Copics, where I color directly on the die, let it dry, then I spritz Colorless Blender onto the paper before I emboss. The dampened paper give a crisper embossing and the color is pulled perfectly from the die.
How do you color just the edge of your embossed shape?
Why not place the smaller nestie over the cut out and sponge over the edge. you might want to mask the centre with post-its to avoid colouring over hte inner edge.
If I am reading the OPs question correctly, she wants colour on the edge of the die cut. You can ink up the die with pigment ink then run it through the die cutter. The ink will transfer to the edge only. I recommend taping the die on with low tack tape so it doesn't shift giving you ink where you don't want it. Similar to the technique Marianne mentioned but doesn't require Copics. I have tried dye ink but the results were splotchy because it dries to fast and beads up. I wonder if Distress ink would work bc it stays wet longer.

This sounds like it is possible, but I am confused. I guess a tutorial video on the different ideas would really help me see what the answers are. I am really interested in the answers.
How do you get the color onto the nestie die? Would distress inks work? They stay wet longer.
I'm a bit confused. It is only when I am using the smallest size of Nestie that I ever need to try and figure out how to color just the embossed edge. If you have a smaller size to begin with, just use it and cut out a second layer and adhere it over the darker layer. You're done. But when you are using the smallest size Nestie, that is when I have trouble. I've tried a steady hand and just coloring the edge. Looked tacky. Tried putting dye ink on the edge only. Was blotchy. Tried tracing the center part and cutting it out to make a mask. That didn't work great either, as the dye ink soaked under the mask. I also have other dies I'd love to be able to make a center mat for, but still trying to figure it out. If it's a circle or square, no problem. But some of my Sizzix tags are irregularly shaped. I like the look of layered tags.....so I guess my search goes on.
I have used a Versamark pen around the edge of the diecut, then applied Perfect Pearls.

How about using the air brush thing to mist the edges? Brain fade...can't remember what that thing is called. The black thing that you put a marker in and squeeze. Anyway, cut another nestie and cut off the edge like others have suggested. Then place the one without the border over the top with removeable adhesive. Then just air brush the color onto the border.
That would be the Stampin' Up! spritzer tool, right? Love that thing!
