I've been using a HUGE amount of those 3d foam adhesive squares lately and started thinking, "couldn't i just make my own?". Anyone have any experience with this? Was thinking you could use the foam sheet (like what they use to make the foam shapes) and spray adhesive on both sides and cover with waxed paper. You could cut it into any shape or size.
If you have the Xyron sticker maker (the X-shaped one), cut your foam sheet into strips 1 1/2" wide. Run through the sticker maker, leave the white backing on, remove the clear topper and run through again, so you'll have adhesive on both sides. I first tried this when I needed some black popdots, so I tried this to make my own. Been doing this for years now and it works great!

a lot of stampers use the trimming off their stamps. peel off the back paper-then both sides have adhesive. use as foam tape.

This is what I do to. I had a big stash of pop dots, but its dwindling now, but I always did this for black cardstock. It works great.
Cut a piece of foam to size. Apply glue, let it set for a few seconds, apply to project.
My foam dots won't move at all. They are like a rock. No more buying pop dots for me. Plus, I have colors. It matches my project. I really hate pop dotting something and I see the white behind it when the creation is black.
For those who use the Xyron to make their own, has anyone crunched the numbers to determine whether it is any cheaper? I know the replacement cartridges for the Xyrons can be pretty pricy unless a good deal is found. Thoughts anyone?

I actually did crunch the numbers for this. I really love frugal crafting. I have noticed since I started frugal crafting some of the frugal items are not that cheap compared to just buying them outright.
I used to buy pop dots 200 in a package, all different sizes for a $1.00. That's a really great deal. I had enough for a lifetime. The glue on the back was the same consistency of Xyron. I ran some foam through a Xyron. Then I crunched the numbers with my DH's help. He's a big numbers geek. It does come out slightly more expensive for Xyron pop dots. I did factor in the coupons. I forgot to add that. I did use a 50% coupon and 40% coupon for comparison. My generic pop dots I was buying from one of my favorite Dollar Stores came out cheaper. If you were using a name brand pop dot then Xyron would be cheaper.
My Tacky glue & Dollar Tree foam frugal dots average about even from my generic dots. I use a more expensive Tacky Glue so higher price. What I like about my generic dots are the colors. That's why I make them. They are cheaper in the long run because I only use the foam when I need it. My glue is on hand. Both of these supplies can be used to make other things.
Yes, I know I have no life, lol. I actually wrote a frugal crafting book. It's on my hard drive taunting me. I was publishing it and I had a really hard year last year. Then my DS had a hard year last year. So, no book published. Each of my frugal items I wrote about I crunched the numbers before adding it to my book. I was going to publish the book and the money was going to charity. I keep posting all my tips over here, lol.

Thank you for this. Very good information. I had a cheap source for foam dots at our dollar store but they don't seem to carry them anymore. So it would have to be a brand name with a coupon at Michaels here in Canada, or a big stock-up next time I'm in the USA. There is a SCS member who sells some through a website but I know those prices weren't as good as my dollar store version. They might be the next best thing if I don't want to try and make my own.
In this economy, your book on frugality just might be a big hit! I was an avid reader of The Tightwad Gazette back in the day. It helped me save lots of money over the years :-)

I like the Xyron adhesive idea using a foam sheet. I'd use that for larger foam pieces when I need them. But for the smaller pop dots, I like the peel and stick of the already cut ones. The less I use my scissors the better for me.
When I go thru a sheet of pop dots , I alo use the "back ground" so there is no waste. Either I cut it into stips or cut into "t" pop dots. Hope that makes sense.
I use the old foam trimmings from when we used to cut our stamps. Cut to size, then just peel off the rubber, and the backing, and you have the inside foam. Makes a great dimensional and is saving it from going in the landfill!
