I actually didn't do anything to the backside of mine, but thought about doing the same to the back and I did to the front...this would just take longer to do. You could put glue felt to it, or something else if you didn't want to finish the back the same as the front.

Oh my gosh ... what fun these are!! :-D I went out today to Michael's and purchased alcohol inks and all the other necessary supplies and have so far "colored" eight washers. I'm switching color combinations now and doing another eight.
I am making these for my Bunco group as Christmas gifts. I hope to Diamond Glaze them tonight and will post pictures when I can.

I found Metal Stamps at Harbor Freight for $5, but liked the ones at Fleet Farm better(they come in a nice wooden box..easy to get stamps) Some jewelry suppliers have them with nicer fonts
I feel like a complete idiot asking this, but several of you have mentioned embossing the washer after adding DSP....do you just pat the whole front with versamark ink pad, add powder then heat-emboss??
These are absolutely incredible, by the way! Love 'em and have plans to stop at the hardware on the way home! lol!
Thanks for the tip about washers at Wal-Mart. I am so looking forward to making these cool necklaces! I am going to Hobby Lobby later for the glossy stuff ... will someone please tell me what product they have that I should get for this project? Thanks!
I found at Hobby Lobby and JoAnn's something very similar to Crystal Effects, made by Ranger's and called Glossy Accents. I see others have tried using VersaMark on the entire washer and heat embossing with Utee. I may try that, because you have to make sure you don't touch or disturb them when they're drying with the Glossy Accents or Crystal Effects.
Thank you so much for responding, Shelly. I did get Glossy Accents, and it works great! I have six washers drying now. I tried wire for the necklace and am not thrilled with it. I am going to get some cording. Do you have any recommendation about the width, or a certain brand? Thanks for everyone's input on this great project.

Yup! That's what I do, pat it onto the versamark pad, sprinkle embossing powder over it and heat it with the heat gun. Then while the pendent is still hot with my fingers I sprinkle a few more layers on until it's the thickness I want it.
The biggest thing with this though, is everything gets REALLY HOT! The washer, embossing powder, the craft mat and the table underneath. I would suggest putting a pot holder or something that will help absorb some of that extra heat underneath the craft mat before you begin and wait a while before you try to pick it up. Doing it this way, you may have some excess embossing powder around the outer and inner edge. I just used a craft knife and cut that away.
What about the EP that gets stuck to the back? Any tips on removing it? I tried to emboss the back first, then do the front and the back melted away anyways. So i just emboss the front but inevitably there is some EP stuck to the back. I'm giving these as gifts so I want them to look as nice as possible

The embossing powder on the back did melt, but sense I didn't move the washer while it was hot, it was still there when it had cooled. But as long as you don't move it until it's cool, it will still have a nice protective layer on the back.

I will try this Leen.. I only did one coat.. I let it cool but probably not long enough (it was still fairly warm, just not burning my fingers

I made a couple too, and am really pleased with them. I used pretty paper with a couple of half pearls on the one side, and then I put several layers of gold ink and gold UTEE on the other side, and stamped it with a swirly stamp. Then I put a couple of layers of Glossy Accents ( you could use Diamond Glaze ) on the side with the paper and pearls- they look quite gorgeous and I plan on giving them as gifts.
One of the top things on my shopping list for Saturday is to go to the nearest hardware store and get a supply in of large washers. My older granddaughter ( age 14) and a 12 year old great niece LOVE doing crafts and this will be right up their alley(s).

Great challenge, hope to try making some for Christmas gifts. Do you do any thing to the back of the pendants or just leave with the washer look? thanks for sharing!

I used decorative paper on the front, and UTEE ( gold) on the back, so whichever way the pendant dangles there is something of interest. I don't have any metal stamps although I have a friend who does, and I might be able to borrow them.
This is an easy and quite attractive piece of "jewelry". It just shows you what you can do with items one would not ordinarily think of as jewelry. haha
A number of years ago, a friend at work jokingly gave me some pistachio shells and said"Here, see what you can do with these". The next day I presented her with little shell earrings with a teeny fake pearl inside. I had painted the shells gold. My friend was astounded, and I was embarassed because she made such a to-do over it in the office. The friend gave them to her mother who loved them.:rolleyes:

UTEE is Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel- really just a thicker embossing powder. You should be able to get it in Mikey's (Michaels), and I think it would be in the scrapbooking section, but just ask for embossing powders. If you ask someone at Michaels for UTEE, they might not undertand what you're talking about...UTEE comes in large jars 180 grams if that makes sense to anyone. There are even larger containers for clear and gold sometimes.
I have been using it for years- there are different colors- pearl, gold, bronze, silver, clear, and then there are also what they call "Brights"- red, green, etc. Not sure if every Michaels carries every color. Suze Weinberg is the lady who came up with it in the first place. You can order it from her too. Most craft stores carry it, so ask around. Just type in Suze Weinberg into your browser and BEHOLD! Follow her blog- she is hilarious.
