Can I ask a stupid question? Is acetate the same as a transparency? I would love to do this technique and from the sounds of things that is what it seems to me but I don't want to screw it up before I start by using the wrong thing. Thanks from a newbie

Yes, for these purposes, acetate is the same as a transparency.

Well, I can't find my printer acetate, only the write on kind and that does NOT work with my printer, so I guess I'll pass on this one.

Lynn, this was a very interesting challenge. I am not sure I like my end result, but after all the work I did, I had to post it.

Do you have any acetate left over from some packaging that you have recently received? You could tape that to a piece of typing paper and run it through. Just a thought.

I am waiting for my ink to dry...

but for those who are having issues getting the image to "lose" it's color...I went to photobucket and found a pic I wanted and clicked "edit"...once the editing page is open click on the tab (or category) EFFECTS. Then it shows you a bunch of different coloring options. Click the arrow at the right for "more" until you see the options named "sketch" or "color sketch". This removes color from the image. Once you figure out which one you want, click "save a copy" or "replace original" whichever you want. Then right click the changed image and "save as" to your computer.

Then just open it up in something like Microsoft Word and insert it as a picture...and then set your printer to "transperancy" paper and you should be good to go...

I just did that and have a delightful image to color...as soon as my ink gets dry...

Oh, Lynn, the problem isn't going thru the printer, but the ink beads up, making for a not nice image. I considered cheating and just stamping an image with stazon

UGG any suggestions?

HELP!! I tried to print off my HP all-in-one with the settings to gray scale and paper to transparency... but the ink wouldn't dry, so I tried to us EP and heat set, no good... and then I tried just to heat set... still no good. I am currently trying SU Basic Black and waiting for the just heat set image to dry... but I am having major issues with patience! Did anyone else have this much trouble and finally got it to work? I read Dawn had some issues, but I followed those suggestions and still not a good image...

Oh, crafting shouldn't be frustrating...it should be fun. Walk away if this is causing you grief...it's not worth it. I used a laser jet, so I won't be able to help answer your question. Are you printing on the correct side of the transperancies (see the box or packaging for instructions)?

I've been reading all the posts and the various issues. I didn't have any problems with the printing, but rather with the coloring. Very few copics and I don't like how the Sharpies turned out. Going to try again with the gray scale printing and I realized that I have gobs of alcohol reinkers....DUH! Anyway, off to try again!!

I guess I don't have the right kind of acetate to print on (and or the right printer LOL), cause I tried several times and failed .. I did end up using a stamp and colored on the back with Bic markers. ( I don't have Copics, maybe some day). I combined it with another challenge WT221, to use punches to create an image.. Here's my card:Punch Flower by DandI93 at Splitcoaststampers

Finally had some success with this technique and it turned out that I used one of the images I had colored early this morning. This is my party animal card...thanks for looking!

Here's my first one: ATC Colored Acetate by ruby-heartedmom at Splitcoaststampers

I'll definitely be back with another. I had to print my photos in grayscale and take them to the copy machine at Staples because I don't have ink jet transparencies.

The sharpies were definitely a limitation, but it is a fun technique anyway!

Here's mine..no trouble printing as I have a laser jet, but coloring isn't the easiest for a perfectionist. I kept messing with it and got a spot I couldn't fix but will definitely try another after this experiment...

Here's my second try at coloring with these sharpies. Not too great--streaky. Bossy

I still love the technique and will keep playing with it.

FYI everyone: There are 3 kinds of acetate/transparencies out there. You have to know which kind you have.

1. Ink Jet transparencies go through your ink jet printer and actually dry. If you have these you probably know it because they are expensive.
2. Transparencies for copy machines--they can take the heat from the copier and the toner. These have a removable white strip on one side, so the copy machine can detect where the edge is. (moderately priced) You can print your grayscale photo on white paper at home and take it to the office supply store and make a transparency there with your own transparencies, or ask them to do it for you.
3. Transparencies that are write-on only and can't take the heat from a copier and ink from the printer just beads up on them. Usually don't come with a white strip on one side. Stamp on these, but don't try anything else requiring heat. (cheap)

Maybe I'm technically challenged but I couldn't get a photo to print the way I thought it needed to for this technique, so I just stamped on acetate and colored on the back. It's here.

Ok, I don't have a printer at home so I could not print an image on the acetate....however, I did use my stamps. Then colored in using the pearl x. Hope that you like my attempt...

For those of you who have Inkjet printers, you might consider going to your local Office Supply store and printing your pics on a Laser printer. My first attempt at Inkjet didn't work, but the laser printer of my husbands was perfect!

Just a thought! You have to try this technique it really is cool!

Three days later... I emerge from my stamp room with a finished card. I had lots of trouble with the ink coming off the acetate. It was dry so I couldn't emboss it, but it kept rubbing off. Then I tried to cut out the acetate with my nesties, and the tiny paper pieces from my B plate stuck in the parts I colored with my copics. So I tried to rinse off the paper pieces in the sink and instead washed off the computer ink. Arghhh!

So finally, here is my card....

Santa in June

Thanks for looking!
