Steve makes Apple sauce with Granny Smith apples and a little sugar but we like it chunky, inEngland we always use Bramley apples for cooking, they are very sharp cooking apples not for eating. I think in the states apple sauce is puréed, not what we are used to.
We love it with Pork and pies of course.

I will have to rethink my F card, the idea I had came to nothing when I couldn’t find what I was looking for! I have already done G! I’m managing to keep up but I’m really struggling for ideas.!

I found this photo this morning taken from the plane window as we came into land, flying over London.

Our son works in London and pointed out all the Landmarks, quite fascinated me, you can see London Bridge and the building top right , looks like a rocket is nicknamed the Gherkin, our son designed some of lighting inside the building quite a few years ago.

Gracie, best wishes for your daughter. I haven't heard the word crushed in relationship to the disc before. Mine were bulging everywhere, so the nerves were shot. I will keep her in prayer for the surgery and recovery. I pray her nerves calm down so she has the correct feeling back in her leg.

Just to share, my E card won the winner badge on the Word Art Wednesday blog. I will receive a gift card for Lawn Fawn. The card fit perfectly in their challenge. They have a new challenge today if anyone is interested. https://wordartwednesday.blogspot.co...s-631-632

Congrats Lisa!! I used to check out word art Wednesday a whole lot. Don't know why I quit except maybe I lost the link. I'll have to go find it.

Morning!

Congrats, Lisa! Very cool!

Gracie, prayers for your daughter and for you traveling! Hope to see you in the gallery soon!

I only use Macintosh apples for my applesauce and pies. My kids like the applesauce chunky! So I do not cut the apples small when cooking on the stovetop. Sure sends such a wonderful smell through the house when I make it. Didn't do it this year as we did not host Thanksgiving.

I feel worse today and late last night from the chiro appointment. Always that way after they move your back around! Plus, the cold is so bad, my little fingers got so cold from the walk from the front door to the car! It's not that far either! And yes I had my heavy gloves on and a big hat and scarf! I got one of those hats that has the scarf attached. Only problem with it is that it is so very soft it kept slipping off my head backwards!

Have a good day all, stay warm and crafty!!

Ideas for F can be really simple like front door or forest! First floor of your home?

Yes, Jan, you can make applesauce chunky. I often do that. I just skip the blender. Since I've been using free apples, I'm not being choosy. Would you believe I still have some from my sister's? They are sitting on my kitchen table just waiting for me to get out the peeler. Hopefully, I can get to them later today.

DH is taking me to the library to get new books. He'll drop me off, go swimming at the Y and then come back for me. I return my books, go get new ones, check out and then sit and read until he gets there. We use less gas that way. Always looking for ways to save.

Good morning! It has been a busy morning already as we took the Yaris to get a new clutch installed. Yes, DH could do the work but no, he doesn't have time (or the inclination) so we took it to a shop nearby this morning.

DD1 called us yesterday evening on her way to urgent care. They diagnosed some kind of stomach bug. My rib that was slightly out of place a few months ago has decided to do that again so that is fun....not! Oh well, life goes on, right? Needless to say, my phone was out being consulted during board meeting last night waiting for the report from DD1.

Beautiful photo, Melody. I, too, hope the snow isn't harming your lilac bushes. My mom had a lilac bush where I grew up, I loved them. So pretty and such a wonderful scent!

All this talk of making applesauce! Near where we live is a place called Apple Hill with a lot of apple farms. They've turned it into quite the tourist destination. Those farmers would tell you that for the best apple pie and applesauce, use 2-3 different kinds of apples. I don't ever do that but I've heard them say that. We sometimes just make raw applesauce by adding the cinnamon and stuff to fresh apples that have been chunked or pureed.

Gracie, prayers for your daughter and please be careful around her dogs with your knee recovery!

Jan, your F card is lovely. Is that your plan B idea or did you find what you were looking for to make your original idea?

Love the photo of London, I can see my favorite Tower Bridge in it! Such a pretty bridge. How long has the Gherkin been there?

Congratulations, Lisa, on your win. I'm not familiar with that challenge (I'm sure there are a lot of challenges I'm not familiar with!).

Ann, I hope you are feeling better soon. I'm used to applesauce being pureed but think chunky would be wonderful too.

LIsa, congrats on your win. When I click on that link it says it is a dangerous website.

We got a foot of snow today! Might all be gone by Friday though..

Fave apple lately is honey crisp.

I am not sure why it is saying it is a dangerous website. It is a blog, maybe that is why. My computer doesn't flag it. Thanks for trying.

Hi ladies,
Lisa- congrats on your win! I used to post there more regularly- not since Colorado. I need to get back into the groove! House Mouse is one challenge I post in regularly!

Catherine- hope your DD is OK! And, hope you are OK with your rib out of place- so many nerves around the ribs- bet that is painful!

Shirl- that is a ton of snow! Hope you are staying warm!

Melodie and Kathy- I like Honeycrisp of envy apples- and do NOT like GALA!!! Not sure why.... A little cinnamon on the apples and its all OK though!

Gracie- prayers for a smooth surgery for your DD and for your knee to behave while you are there!

Jan- I love your pic of the London skyline along the river- so cool! Thanks for sharing that!

Ann- sure hope you are doing OK with your back and not suffering too much. No recommendations for an MRI??? My PT gave me different exercises depending on whether I had sciatica (Disc bulging) or no sciatica....... Some of the exercises cause more pressure on the discs and make it worse......

I have a letterbox meet up at the Milwaukee Public library Saturday- I hear it is like a museum! I hope it is a go- there may be some snow Friday-Sat., but so far looks OK. It is more of a potluck and chat session..... but that is OK with me. I hope to be able to see this cool library!

Waving hello and healing hugs to those in need!

Shelly

Catherine The Gherkin was completed in 2003 and opened in 2004, can’t believe it’s twenty years ago!

Good Morning,

Congrats Lisa, on your win.
My DH is feeling better, because of the kidney transplant, he has to take immunosuppressive drugs. He lost 10 pounds of weight in 3 days and he was very slim before the weight loss. He has now gained six pounds again and I hope he has the 4 pounds back at the end of the month.

On Monday he had his 70. Birthday. We had some coffee and cake with the family together.

@ Shirl, thank you for your birthday card, I keep it close until my birthday.
Did you get my Birthday card?

Sending get well wishes to all who need them, sending hugs to you all.

The winter arrived yesterday with lots of snow and ice on the streets.

Dagmar, so pleased to hear your DH is getting better and putting some weight back on.
Do you still use chains on your tyres? I remember our German neighbours always used them in snow,

Gracie I hope you don’t overdo it looking after your DD , I hope her surgery goes well.

The weather is so warm here, 20c again although from lunchtime yesterday we had high winds, we cleared the leaves before our meal last night but there were quite a few in the pool this morning so it encouraged us to get the leaf blower out and clear the front and back garden as it’s forcast winds again tomorrow.

Good morning! We had five lovely deer in our back yard this morning, they are so pretty. And it looks so green out there now due to all the rain we've been having. DD2 had to be at work at 3:00 am today because the truck, which usually comes on Tuesday was delayed until today.

DD1 was feeling worse yesterday than on Tuesday, praying she is better today.

Wow, Shirl, a foot of snow?! And I agree with your favorite apple of honey crisp. That is one of my favorites as well.

Shelly, yes, it is painful. Yesterday, however, my co-worker suggested it might not be a rib slightly out of place but my gall bladder. Of course, I went and looked at gall bladder symptoms and I don't have any of the ones I saw listed. I'm thinking that this rib may just do this from time to time now. It seems like once it has happened once, it is more likely to do it again.

That library sounds like a cool place (of course, I think all libraries are cool!). I hope you get to see it. The library in my home town (where I spent a lot of time as a patron and later as a volunteer) I just saw is listed as a haunted building in Oregon. I had no idea. It isn't the library any longer, it is now an art center and the library was moved to a different location long after I moved away.

Jan, that explains why it didn't look familiar to me. I was last in London well before 2003. Sorry you are having such windy weather, I am not a fan of wind! And leaves seem to be endless!

Dagmar, happy birthday to your DH. I'm glad to read he is doing better.

Lovely photos of your snow.

Catherine, if you pain is gall bladder, it can produce all sorts of pain. I remember my pain and it was horrible. But hopefully it is your rib pain just coming back to visit and will subside and stay away.

Dagmar, I enjoyed your photos. So beautiful.

Hello everyone....sunny but still very very cold here. 6 degrees F.
I had no heat on Tuesday morning when I woke up. I went downstairs to check on the furnace, it was making appropriate noises but no heat being blown. Scott and Liz had to work so they called a furnace place they use. Turns out it was the exhaust vent getting plugged with ice. Water is dripping out of it, freezing and the tech said no water should be dripping out of it, it should go back into the furnace and exit the hose in the laundry room. He said it could happen again and, indeed, the ice is building up. Liz chopped it out for me yesterday because I couldn't get it to budge with a screwdriver, guess I need an awl. I checked it today and it is again starting to fill up with ice. That side of the house doesn't get sun. It's good that it wasn't the furnace itself or something that needs replacing but the tilt of the exhaust vent is probably off. When the tech told her what was wrong, she then remembered that the former owner told them about it. He listed all sorts of stuff that needed fixing but apparently he was content with going outside in this weather and chopping ice. I am not. He told them these things in the spring, easy to put it out of your mind. So Liz is kicking herself that she didn't remember that. I say it's the INFAMOUS FORMER OWNER who should have been proactive. I'm irritated about it for Liz and Scott's sake. I hope fixing the tilt isn't too bad and I'm hoping Liz and Scott do that. Thanks for listening.
I have my first Medicare wellness visit next week with my new primary and yesterday was the call from the nurse to go over everything. I think that nurse call is standard procedure, probably saves time for the doctor. It's a new experience for me.
Gracie, I hope your daughter's surgery will be successful and I echo what everyone says....don't do too much to help her!
Jan, I have heard of the Gherkin. Isn't that a pickle? That building looks like a pickle? Cool that your son worked on it.
I have decided that I don't care for honey crisp any longer. The last ones I bought were so bland tasting. My new favorite, mostly because Aldi carries them, is cosmic crisp. I bought some lemonade apples the other day, I wouldn't recommend them. They look a bit like a gold delicious, not much flavor IMHO.
Dagmar, happy birthday to your husband. I'm glad he feels better, is gaining that weight back and building strength. How much snow do you usually get?
Melody, your poor lilacs. I'm guessing it's best to leave them alone. It's amazing how nature can bounce back.
Catherine, I feel badly for your oldest daughter and that bug. And you with that rib thing. And your second daughter with having to work so early. And what is a Yaris? A car? Oh I see, it's a Toyota. Hmmm, never heard of that.
Shelly, you are making me wish I still lived near Milwaukee. I haven't been to that library in years, it's big!
I took out three books at the library: Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear; The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman; and Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, which is a futuristic fantasy book. I've always heard that book recommended, I did watch a movie that was made, pretty good, we'll see how much I like that one. The Richard Osman book is part of the Thursday Murder Club series; I read the first one and enjoyed it. I'm reading Maisie right now, I'd highly recommend that if you like mysteries like I do. The library has shelves with free books and of course, I had to bring home a few of those. It's a sickness with me.
Well guess that's enough from me. I should get out of the house but this cold is keeping me in. Oh I need to tell you all that I decided enough was enough and I shopped yesterday for ingredients for some recipes I like. I have not gotten back into much cooking since I moved here; just not motivated to eat the same thing over and over. I made a sheet pan dinner last night that is so good. Chicken, green beans, cherry tomatoes, red potatoes, balsamic vinegar and honey marinade. Yum.

Glad to know you got your card Dagmar! And I did get your beautiful card. Maybe you did not see the post awhile ago. Thank you! Happy Birthday to your dh and glad he is gaining back the weight

More snow is forecasted for later on today. They are telling people to not go out if you don't have to.

Last night, a friend sent me a you tube link about the snow song, sung on the train on the way to Vermont in White
Christmas, so that spurred me on to pull out our copy and we enjoyed watching it last night.

Prayers for all the aches, pains and ills on here.

Yes Jean a gherkin is a pickle, I don’t like them but our son has to hide the jar from our GS as he loves them, better than sweets though I guess!
Im pleased I don’t have to think about meals, Steve just tells me what he’s planning and I just have to shop for what he puts on the list.
I read one Richard Osman book about the Murder club but wasn’t keen on it, I haven’t been in a reading mood since we came home but unfortunately I’m half way through a book I started reading on the boat travelling home before Christmas.

Catherine I missed you are having pain again, I like that you googled the symptoms, sometimes not a good thing!! Hope the pain goes and I hope your DD gets well soon.

Our-son also worked on lighting at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Science Museum, also Strangeways prison years ago, he said that was most scary, having guards walking with you and that was outside, he also went to Buckingham Palace, outside security lighting, he had to send his passport and documents before he was allowed an appointment and his car was a scanned before he was allowed in the gate, he didn’t actually do the work in the end.

Ive just hurt my shoulder and arm taking off my sweater! Honestly how can that happen, I’ve just been to put some cream on it, a symptom of getting old haha, takes longer to heal too .

Afternoon ladies!

Shirl, stay indoors is right with all of that snow! Yuck! Ours is suppose to start melting with temps in the 40's coming next week! I can't wait!

Dagmar, happy birthday to your DH and so glad to hear he is doing better! That was a big operation to have! How long was he in the hospital?

Catherine, oh yes, I have had my gall bladder out too! It's a different sort of pain in the right side, I let it go for a long time just thinking it was pains from lifting kids!

I hope your DD! starts feeling better soon! And yikes that is too early to start work for DD2! How does she handle all of the time changes in her work schedule?

I'm slowly catching up on things! Commenting almost there! Back is sore again today after the adjustment. Trying not to lift and making sure I bend correctly.

Have a good rest of your day everyone! Stay warm and safe!

Hello all,

thank you for the get well wishes, for DH.

Jan, usually we have 2 to 5 inches of snow. This time we had 12 Inches. In the last ten years, we didn't have that much snow. It was snowing 24 hours, with now break. No, we don't use chains on tyres, but the trucks should have used some this time.

Ann, he stayed for two weeks in the hospital.

Sending get well wishes for all the aches, pains and ills on here.

Good morning! We are in the mid-50s here for temperatures, I'll take it. Last year, we were still getting snow storms at the end of March. It could still happen but so far, so good. DD1 was feeling better yesterday when I checked on her. She should have been back to classes today. DD2 had to be at work at 4 am this morning so she'll get home early afternoon. But, because of her early shift this morning, she went to bed quite early so I haven't seen her much the last couple of days.

Yesterday, the truck was supposed to arrive at 4 am which is why she had to be at work at 3 am. Well, the truck was delayed (I'm sure due to roads and snow) and didn't arrive until 10 am. They sent an email about it at 3:30 am! Three of her co-workers arrived at 4 am which is when they found out the truck was delayed. They hadn't clocked in yet so offered to go home and come back at 10 am. She was so thankful to them! Her manager brought them pizza for lunch and she plans on bringing them donuts next week to thank them.

We got the Toyota Yaris back yesterday evening. I haven't driven it yet because I knew DH would want to drive it and check it out, see what he thought. We took it Wednesday morning and they were done by Thursday evening. DH is well pleased. I look forward to driving it and seeing what it is like now. Jean, it is a lower end Toyota and smaller than a Corolla. This is the car we bought intending it to be DD1's car but then she wouldn't master driving a stick shift.

I'm pretty sure this pain isn't gall bladder, it is almost gone now and, like I mentioned, I didn't have any of the other symptoms.

Jean, so sorry about your heat, that is terrible! I hope it is an easy fix. Some people just aren't handy which may be why the former owner didn't address it. That is interesting about the nurse call before the appointment. Did you know that was going to happen? I hope so, I think I might have forgotten things to tell the nurse on the call if I wasn't prepared (and maybe even if I was!).

Shirl, that song from White Christmas is what the girls and I might start singing if we have snow here at the house - particularly the beginning part where they sing "Snow, snow, snow, snow." You never know when one of us might burst into song based on something someone else has said, very random and eclectic.

Yes, Jan, I wasn't sure I should be googling gall bladder pains, it can be a dangerous thing to do.

How cool that your son has worked on all these buildings, some very interesting places too.

My dad did the cooking in our house too. My DH doesn't do that but he does help. He is my chief salad maker while I make the rest of the meal and he is always happy to chop things for me. He does have excellent knife skills in the kitchen, better than mine!

So sorry you hurt your shoulder and arm, hope it feels better very soon. My chiropractor has seen people in his office who hurt their back turning off a light switch, just twisted wrong in the process.

Ann, did your gall bladder pain come and go? Sorry your back is still hurting.

Wow, Dagmar, two weeks in the hospital is quite the stay. I was in for 3-4 days when I had the girls and that seemed pretty long. So glad he is doing better.

Yay, I finally finished ALL the apples today. I made 2 dozen more mini pies and some uncooked pie filling, which I froze. The pies will end up in the freezer tomorrow.

I ended up tossing quite a few of the apples that had gone bad, because I procrastinated on getting them done, but I'm still happy with what I managed to accomplish. It didn't seem like that many apples when we were picking them, but when they are irregular, and you have to peel them all by hand, it ends up being a lot of work. I made a lot of applesauce, since that was easiest, but gave most of that away. But I will have plenty of little pies to enjoy throughout the year.

Catherine your DD does have to start work early! Steve worked shifts so was used to early mornings, sometimes his shift started at 2am, mostly 6am, we used to wave to each other as I was going home and he was on his 2pm start, one place I worked was just along the road from his place of work!

Forgot to say my F card was a variation of my original idea, decided to add the window as I had six free in a magazine my son bought me, he really finds some good ones as I have so many DP’s and toppers etc from them. I can’t get craft mags here so he always buys me a pile of them for my birthday.

My arm is a little better but I have been using the cream and pain killers before bed, strange but both my arms where I the flu and Covid shots feels tender if I press it, of course I told Steve my muscles hurt, he said what muscles!! No sympathy at all haha!

Our weather is very mixed, the weather has been very mild, we’ve had a few days of 20c, a day when it was cloudy so we lit the fire at 2pm, yesterday spots of rain.

Ann take care, sore backs are the worst thing !

Catherine, my friend and I do that too with that snow song. Fun when the other ones know exactly where you are coming from when breaking out into song, lol.

Wow, Melody, yum on the applesauce and pies!! I think I should live closer, lol.

Have to get through one more night of low temps, then warmup coming again. Since DH is at the cabin helping butcher (making sausage and scrapple 8 pigs!) I was in charge of making sure our pipes didn't freeze overnight. We need to get some wrapping to insulate. I've been after him for the past couple of winters to get this done but it keeps getting put off. I set a timer for 35-40 minutes and got up all night long. He and I usually work in shifts so we can get some sleep but with him going this weekend I was on my own. The temp is 21 right now do maybe I should take a nap! LOL

Wow, Kathy, that does not sound fun at all. What are you doing, running the water to keep the pipes from freezing?
Melody, I bet your apple pies are wonderful. Do you make your own crust?
Shirl, glad my card arrived. That wasn't too bad, I just sent it maybe last week.
There is a song for everything that happens in this world. I'm often singing when a song comes to mind that fits the event.
Dagmar, Americans would rarely stay in the hospital that long. At best, we get sent to rehab before going home. Hope he continues to improve and that you go back to the normal amount of snow.
We are at 12 degrees F....twice as high as yesterday. Whoooo hoooooeeeeeee. Big whoop!
Jan, hope the shoulder gets better soon. Normal living can be scary. So cool your son worked on some very iconic projects.
As I said in my last post, I'm trying to cook more. Today's menu is African peanut stew. Sweet potatoes, ground turkey, onions, tomatoes, curry, coconut milk, chunky peanut butter. I've never made it, my daughter has but it's been a long time.
Catherine, glad your eldest is better, great employees your younger one works with. I think the former owner was fairly handy but I think he was also very frugal and didn't want to hire anyone to do something, even if he couldn't do it. That's my take on it, anyway.
See you later. J

Yes, Jean, I make my own pie crust. I just can't see spending money on something that easy to make. I have a recipe that always makes great crust. If you want the recipe, let me know & I'll copy it out for you.

Jean, yes. I run the water and flush the toilet. I think the insulation is off on the pipes to the toilet. We really should have checked it out when it was warm out but definitely going to this spring or summer.

Melody, I'd love a recipe for crust. I have been using the NYT crust recipe....flour, butter, ice water. It works pretty well, but I'm always looking for a better way. My big thing is how does it roll out. My Mom's recipe with lard was delicious but I always had trouble rolling it out. She could do it standing on her head.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

I'm staying with my DD until Monday. Her surgery went very well. Thank you for all your prayers and good wishes! She has stomach & back pain and is sleeping a lot. We're both hobbling about and watching football and movies. Thank you again for keeping us in your prayers! We appreciate it so much!

Jean, I hope you're staying warm now. Ann, hoping that you're feeling better. Dagmar, wishing your DH a speedy recovery. Catherine, glad DD1 is doing better and I hope your ribs heal soon. Jan, hoping your arm and shoulder are better, too. I hope I didn't miss anyone!

Have a great day! I'm looking forward to getting back to making cards soon and looking at your galleries again. It seems like it's been such a long time since I've been active in SCS!

Did anyone watch the Packer and 49ers game yesterday? It was sad for the Packers, I knew they would screw it up in the end!! Oh well maybe next year!

Gracie, so happy that you and your daughter are doing better! Take the time you need to recover and don't rush back to activities.

Melody, how big of a freezer do you have? My problem is things get frost burn on them in my big freezer and can't keep things longer then a few months. How did you wrap the pies for the freezer?

Off to get some chores done! Have a good day all!

Ann, yes, we watched the Packer game. It was a good season for this young team, but it would have been so sweet if they could have won! My husband uses a "Seal a Meal" machine for everything he freezes, which prevents freezer burn.

Ann, I don't know the cubic foot size of the freezer. We have a chest freezer in the basement. To reach the bottom, I have to literally bend over the edge at the waist and reach all the way down, so pretty deep. The mini pies are made in muffin pans, so you get an idea of how big they are. I use zipper sandwich bags, put 3 pies in each, keeping them flat. Then I put 4 of those into a gallon zipper bag, again keeping them in one flat layer. Neither type of bag is freezer safe, just regular zipper bags, and DH usually buys off brands, so I don't think the quality is as good as some of the more expensive brands, which is one reason I double bag, but they are also contained better. I set a corrugated cardboard box on the bottom of the freezer, then stack the gallon bags flat one on top of the next. They are stacked higher than the box, but they keep well. I have other things that end up getting stacked on top of them, but since they're frozen, it doesn't hurt them. When I wish to use them I bring one gallon bag up, take out one sandwich bag to put in the fridge, and the remaining pies go into the kitchen freezer. I typically only eat one pie at a time, so just warm it in the microwave for about 15-20 seconds right from the fridge. If I pull one from the freezer to the microwave, I zap it for 25-30 seconds.

I chose to do mini pies, because I'm the only one eating them, and this way, I don't have an obligation to eat the whole big pie in a short time. They are single crust, with streusel topping.

Yes, I watched the Packers as well. The only game I watched all season. DH went to bed at half time. Definitely a disappointing game, but they were the underdogs, so not really unexpected.

Gracie so good to hear from you, great to hear your DD is doing well and you are enjoying some relaxing time together.

Melody you made my mouth water, we love pies!

I made a kumquat marmalade cake yesterday as I made a batch of lime marmalade last weekend and realised I already had six jars of kumquat in the fridge, I used to give most of it away but the couple who swapped marmalade for jars has moved. We had the cake with custard for pudding.
