I think that a good starter size is 3/4" or 1" - don't go much smaller than that if you plan on using chipboard or acrylic covers. See if your LSS can demo some sizes so you can choose according to...

Yes, MP does make it glazey - it can make it look like it has oil painting strokes on it. If you put it underneath it is fine. I like the look of MP on top as well but that is a personal preference!...
