I got mine two weeks ago and its it the best trimmer I have ever had. I have no problems with it cutting straight and the edge light is fantastic. I wouldn't be concerned about the plastic guide...

The edge you are getting sounds like the embossed edge, are you using shims in your sandwich? If you don't want the embossed edge then take them out (I don't ever cut with shims).
