Default Gelatin or Gelli Plate Ideas

Let's start a thread about gelatin plates! I have sucumbed to the addiction of gelli printing! I think it would be great to share different techniques, tips, and tools. One of my all-time favorite tools is the plastic bottom piece of a deli tray. It has a raised pattern like concave diamonds, and the reverse is almost like a wedding ring quilt pattern.

Oh, good idea! I can't really share yet, my gelli plate should be delivered today! (I did get a chance to play with a plate last fall and finally got around to ordering one for me.)

I don't have one, but we used one in an art journaling class I took. Among other things, we used a 3-sided comb to "carve" designs into acrylic paint before printing. It created some very cool effects.

I'm dying to try that packing tape idea too!!! Maybe that will be my reward for doing my taxes!!

I LOVE using feathers.

You get this incredible, photographic quality.

Here's what you do:
  • Ink up the plate
  • Place a feather on it
  • pull a print, but don't lift it
  • lift the corner of the paper - just enough to carefully remove the feather
  • put the paper back down, rub and lift

You'll have a GORGEOUS, detailed image of a feather - almost looks like an x-ray!

You're so sweet! Thank you!

To embed a video, just paste the embed code into a post - easy!

So if you're on that YouTube page, click share > embed > copy the code and paste

I am loving these videos so much! I haven't yet got a break to try this, but I am so anxious to give it a shot. I will have to make my own gelli plate and I promise to share my experience (or despair!) with it.

Lydia, your video is so, so nice to watch. Your voice is soft and smooth and I could watch you all day. Seriously!

I need to ask... have you tried doing something with your prints?

I watched this "Faux Chine Colle" technique video and was wondering why did she have to use a thin paper for the first print before printing the collage paper. Is it because with the thinner paper, not much paint is soaked up, and there is still lots left behind for a second print?

This thread is going great! I have bookmarked the videos to watch later! Another favorite tool of mine is textured wallpaper. They are amazing! I keep telling myself not go hunting for more until the ones I have are no longer usuable, but they make the coolest impressions, then combine them with stencils and...well, you get the idea. It's hard to stop. If I can figure it out, I'll also post a picture of some projects where I've used my gelli prints.

Great idea with the wallpaper but Wouldn't you just know I threw my wallpaper bits out when I revamped my craft room, I only had them for about five years!! might have to find some more now.

Lightbulb Glad I found you here!

I've just dived in head first, both with a Gelli plate and a mixed media journal. I'm having SO much fun, I can't even tell ya'. I just blogged about my latest discovery: ghost printing origami works spectacularly well. Also I found that dry embossed paper works great to add texture to Gelli prints. All those embossing folders have a new job! I thought you might enjoy trying the ideas. Ack it's 1 AM. Time for bed.

There is a store west of the DFW area in Mineral Wells that sells them.

Go straight to the source:
6in x 6in Gelli? Printing Plate | Gelli Arts
Or go to Dick Blick where you can find anything under the sun (except for those pastel pencils that Lydia was showing. Lydia, are you paying attention? What were those called? I thought I'd remember when I saw them on the shelf at Dick Blick, but I didn't see them on the shelf, so now I'm out of luck):

Florence the pencils are Caran d'Ache Luminance - I'm about to post a video tutorial with them! I LOVE them.

I need a few prismas that my LSS didn't have so I'm running down to the art supply store in the morning and will check with them then. I know they have prismas so it won't be a wasted trip. Their prismas won't be as cheap as my LSS though. I got them from her for $1 each but I know Michaels wanted $1.89 but they dont have the colors I needed.

Art store didn't have the gelli plates and she made it sound lime she was having trouble finding them. She said she is getting some kind of plates in soon, but they are not the gelli plates. I think they are a harder surface type of thing. The good news is that I found all four of the prismas I was looking for and they were cheaper than Michaels!

I wonder if the harder plates that she's getting in might be the new plates from Stampendous:

I wish I would have thought to ask her and also see when it would be in! That looks like a good alternative.

Sorry they didn't have the Gelli plates but tube YEAH for the rest of your shopping list.

Stampendous has several videos about their plate, you might want to check out. I'm thinking it's a large hard acrylic, kinda like you one would as a handle for unmounteds. I have wondered how much difference there is in using the gelli surface vs a hard surfaces; especially wondered if the paints/inks stayed wet longer on the gelli plate.

Some alternate hard surfaces would be - plexi-glass or glass. Before I remembered I had a sheet of plexi-glass in my craft room I was contemplating buying a cheap 8x10 picture frame from the dollar store or some where else and using the glass out of it.

So I've decided to try and make my own gelli plate. I've watched a couple of tutorials BT which recipe would you recommend? I would like one that would last and one video says it is only good for three months. Also, what type of acrylic paints do you use? I have some water based acryilics but no sure thatnis what they are using. Any helpful ideas would be appreciated.

I haven't made my plate yet, but I picked up some acrylic paints in small tubes at acmoore today. The acrylics I had were the ones in little bottles and used for stenciling. I bought a small basic set.
