You need 4 carriage bolts that are 4 & 1/2" long and 1/4" in diameter.
Look at Terri's site she has the list of supplies. Just substitute her 5 & 1/2 " long bolts for ones that are 4 & 1/2" long.
I just rearranged my markers.
Originally I had assigned one row of the grid for each color family ( R, Y YG etc) and put them in numerical order according to the ones I have.. There are 12 color families on the Copic chart.
I thought about it and realized as I acquire new markers I will always need to move markers to keep them in numerical order.
I may as well get this system perfected before I have so many to move.
So I rearranged them according to the Copic coloring chart and left an empty hole in the grid for each one that I don't have.
This way as I add markers I can just put them in the box.

The smaller size????? What am I missing????????? I have my bin but haven't made the run yet to the hardware store. Want to get the right stuff. . . 4 1/4 X 5 carriage bolts, right?
I used 4 1/2" carriage bolts (4 of them). The rest of the hardware is the same as on Terri's website.
So I rearranged them according to the Copic coloring chart and left an empty hole in the grid for each one that I don't have.
This way as I add markers I can just put them in the box.
This is the way that I store mine and Rebecca did originally had them the way you had yours and was having to move everything when she would get a new marker. So she did what you did too.
I have all the colors except the grays and I don't ever plan on getting all the grays (I just don't use that much gray to need 40+ gray colors). I have a few extra holes so I left a couple of empty holes between the different color families. That way it was easy to see where each family starts. Oh, yes, and I have enough empty holes to add another dozen new Copic Colors next year!
Aren't you proud of how far your creation has come? Look at all of us who have picked up on your design and are now loving our new cases! Thank you for your creativity and sharing it with us.
Actually I'm very proud of how it has been improved. Terri did a great job using the bolts instead of the blocks of wood that I used in my original one. I'm looking forward to the next improvement that someone thinks up. I look upon my first one as a proto-type. I'm sure that there is a way that it could be improved on more, like a grid with just slightly bigger holes so it could hold the original Copics also.
Like I said in my original blog post. I combined 2 other peoples ideas (using a grid and using a ArtBin box) and put them into one that was much more functional for me than that either of the original boxes.
Sometimes set backs turn out to be the best thing in the end
I was very disappointed when the company that made the 3 Solutions Copic shelf units stopped making them. I had hoped to save enough to buy them by Christmas. Well this system is better and costs a fraction of what the 3 Solutions units would have cost

Originally when I brought mine, I got parts of the warm and cool grays with the Ciao sets I bought. Then when I started filling in with the Sketch markers I got some great sales at one store, that I could not pass up the deal of getting the rest of the colors I needed, so now I have all but the florescent ones. I found after taking some on line classes that the grays can work great for toning down some of the real bright colors and will change them depending on what gray you use. It's fun to play with the colors and use a gray to subtly alter them. You then have a whole new range of tones to choose from! Not to mention with shading for animals, lots of variety........love the possibilities!
Just an FYI, I went to my local Michaels this weekend and was told that they consider that box seasonal and are not carrying it at this time. Even the clerk that looked for it for me was dumbfounded as to why it would be considered seasonal. I was able to find it at Joann's.
EricaB,
I have never seen them at Michael's, but my Joann's still had Joann's special colors of dark lime green and dart teal in the half wide size on special at $9.99. I went to the ArtBin site and they are listed as a new item.
No idea when the clear ones will be available in the stores.
The full width clear ArtBin double-deep satchels are available in my local Michaels.
I bought mine at Joann's on-line . It was 40% off and they had free shipping on $35.
With the price of gas I was better off just having it mailed rather than using $4 + in gas chasing all over to save $2-3 on the Art Bin. LOL

Our Joanns only had the clear ones and they were 39.99, urgh, I didn't buy it hoping to find one of the sale ones. Even with a 40% coupon I couldn't match the price you found. I'll have to keep looking.

The ones for $9.99 are the same depth but only half the size. It is like half a case. So far the best price I have found on the large case is on Joann.com. If you sign up for their email list to get the coupons, eventually plastic storage will be 50% off at the same time that you have a free shipping coupon!
Yeah, I think they do. I just happened to see them and they were only $12.99 ea. Everyone was saying how expensive the other ones were and hard to get and I happened to see them. Maybe I'll go back to get one and try it myself.
Is this this one? It looks like it would work from the dimensions. It would also be good for people who work in a tight place as the lid comes off completely. You could stack the open box on the lid when you are working.
The advantage to the ArtBin box is that it has the sturdy carrying handle. The Just Right box has latches but no handle.
I will be curious to see how many pens will fit! I hope you try it and report back!
:-)
Removable lids are nice, but the box has the potential of being 8 pounds or more in weight and a handle is very important. My 12 by 12 ArtBin is almost full (about 350 markers) and it weighs about 13 pounds. I am thinking my half size ones would be 6-8 pounds when it is full. I don't think you would want to carry the box without a handle.
I like the Really Useful Boxes for some things like Copic paper.
However, it is easy to forget to latch the lids and I sure would not want to spill the Copics out and need to organize them again. :(

Now that we've all been making our cases, have you seen the new case Copic is coming out with that holds approx. 380 sketch markers? I saw it on 7kidscollegefund.com and also at oozak.com. One has it for a pre order and Oozak is for notification when it comes in. The price is much higher than what ours cost to make, of course, however it is a very sturdy case with removable sections inside. I do love the fact all my markers are in numerical order, they're so easy to find. These would be color grouped, but bundled within that group.... The top looks like it zips shut, so you wouldn't have to worry about the latches breaking or opening up on you.
I like the Artbin case I assembled with Helen and Terri's directions "much better" than the new one that Copic will have.
In the Artbin case all of my markers are in numerical orders by color family letter. The Copic case has them all grouped together in sections just in color families.
I had mine that way when they were in a box with chipboard dividers and it was not an efficient system.
I know what all of my colors look like on paper, so when I am looking for one I know exactly what letter and number I want.
Having them in numerical order arranged by color family letter works perfect for me.

You ladies are brilliant. But you know, some company is just going to come in and steal your ideas, mass produce them and make a bundle ... but WE will know where this concept was really born!
I bought everything today to try and make this with the really useful box. One thing I did notice though it that this box is larger than the other one so more markers will fit in it plus there will be room on top for paper, etc. I'm not real sure how it will go but I'm curious to see. I'll let you know when I'm done.
Love this idea! I am just freaking out about having my markers stand on end. :} I know they say it's fine......but believing that is gonna take some therapy!
It's all together and came out pretty good. The box is bigger all around than the case. The measurements are 18 3/8" l x 15 3/8" w x 8" h.
I prefer the box because it will be on the shelf next to me, not carried around. Plus I can set the items I am working on on top of the markers. Then I can just set my basket on top of the container when I'm not using it.

Tammy,
How many markers will the larger box hold? Share a picture if you can!
For the directions for the wonderful Copic storage case.....I bought all the goodies and had a guy at work make it for me......He made the top plastic piece a few inches lower so I could grab my markers easier....I love it, bu than......I went to a local scrapstore and took a class yesterday on copics again. They had the new Copic black zip case there with all the baskets inside....Nice, sturdy and also at 10% off the price.....Reg $99 I think it is.....She is getting more in on Wed and I told her I would be down to get it....
I will say, I was very nervous about carrying the ArtBin by the handle, afraid it would open and spat all over the place....I ended up carrying it like it was a suitcase full of money and had the "grip of death" on it under my arm.....LOL After I took out about a dozen of my markers, I had to get my chart out again to see how they went in order. I suppose after a while I would get use to where the numbers would go but only after I bought all the markers and saw they went in order. I dont know maybe it is just me being a worry wart or "freaking" about them... LOL I think I am going to sell it at the next tag sale the store has.
The black case is less combersome (sp) and much smaller. I think I might like storing my markers by the letters and color groups in the mesh baskets better. As for now, the verdict is still out tho.... Thank you again for the wonderful directions. Melissa

Micheal's this week has the Copic markers buy one get one half off....I bought 17 of them today.....What they have is a good selection. Also the new Copic Wallet that sells for $99, is for sale on Oozak for $69.95. I hope this thread has not become a ghost town....:( Melissa

scungilli,
I have had my big double deep ArtBin case since April and not a bit of trouble with the latches opening up. I weighed it and it weighs about 13 pounds and no problems with it at all. I would like the new Copic case if it had a grid in it. I calculated the size of grid I could make for it and it will not hold all my markers. :( I was really disappointed in that. So I will just keep using my ArtBin case for now. It definitely is the best case I have found so far.
I also love my Artbin Copic case!! This is the best storage case I have seen. I am so happy Helen and the other women shared this idea
I don't go to crops or take my Copics anywhere so it is perfect for my needs.
