I have been stamping for almost 20 years.
World Card Making Day used to be packed with
Sales from multiple vendors,
Online challenges,
Games, Freebies
Virtual mini conventions,
Gatherings to create cards
So much chatting you couldn't keep up with the message boards
I did not see a lot of vendor sales either; but, then I didn't google for any. I do have some stamping sites in my bloglovin site; I didn't even check here, SCS, to see if anything was offered. Did close to my heart offer anything? SU had a special sale through today yet. You probably still could do a google search that might go through today, for challenges, sales, etc.

I got some sale notices but nothing "huge". I saw free shipping, or 1/2 off shipping or 15% sales...but no 30-40% off level stuff.
OWH did a blog thing.
Art Impressions had 15% off.
Our Daily Bread had free shipping.
Joann's had something b/c that plus their usual discount made AI much cheaper than AI's sale, but they have limited choice.
I think there might have been some others but I deleted them already. Sorry. But some extended through Monday so look around.....
I did see calls go out for card making...Scrapbooking for Less is having a contest w Christmas cards for a Silhouette for cards to be sent to troops... Scrapbooking for Less - Cards for Troops

I know amuse studio has a stamp sale through midnight tonight. Last year they sold out in the early part of the sale...this year seems a lot slower all around. I followed the Papercrafts blog off and on yesterday and that seemed almost dormant too.

World Cardmaking Day was started in 2006 by Papercrafts. I think part of their problem is going all digital-- I forget they exist. I suspect that one of the reason it doesn't seem like such a big deal of a day anymore is because Papercrafts' influence is waning by being all digital. The stores and stamp makers don't need them quite as much, since the stores all have their own digital presence.
Indeed, there's nothing in Karen's list that is exclusive to WCMD anymore: Sales from multiple vendors: Frequent. Online challenges: Ubiquitous. Games, Freebies: Often coincide with store releases and anniversaries. Virtual mini conventions: on SCS every few months! Gatherings to create cards: my CTMH rep has them monthly. So much chatting you couldn't keep up with the message boards: down across the board thanks to other social media platforms.
I am sure cardmaking will continue to be "alive and well" with or without the marketing fanfare accompanying WCMD.
I realize all these things happen throughout the year (sales, virtual conventions, etc) My middle-aged memory tells me, World Card Making Day used to be a bigger, and something I thoroughly enjoyed, and looked forward to.

I played along with some challenges at Winnie & Walter and had friends over to stamp as well. I still had a great time even if it wasn't a huge thing this year.

Paper Crafts had several things going on, and I uploaded some cards in their gallery. Glad you had a great time. Never heard of Winnie and Walter. I will need to do a Google search

Karen, I agree with you. I was quite surprised to find there were very few special events (challenges) around WCMD. I did look as well hoping for some fun inspiration as I don't get to play all that often (day job). I did end up making cards so it was good but it would have been fun for some chatter ;)

Karen, I was disappointed too. There were some scrapbooking sites that had some activities, but there wasn't much going on in the card making world compared to other years.
I was disappointed too. I know Sharon from The Stamp Simply Ribbon store had a giveaway on her facebook page, but I really didn't see much else. I did see some Walter and Minnie posts pop up in my feed, but didn't click through to check them out.
I participated on the PaperCrafts WCMD blog hop and got almost no response. I hopped around that morning there were less than 100 participants (now it is up to 112). In years past there were triple the participants. Also, the way they did the Mr. Linky was funky, you couldn't see the list of hoppers unless you clicked on the word "Mr. Linky" which was confusing.
I think with the waning online stores and companies, PC magazine going digi, and Pinterest for inspiration, events like WCMD just aren't as popular anymore. sigh...
I think it is only as popular as we (yes that is all of us) make it. Personally I have never been able to participate for a variety of reasons normally associated with time constraints. So from an "outsider's" perspective there really wasn't a lot going on for WCMDspecifically. Didn't SCS use to have a big thread/hop here? But that has moved on to HYCCT which is month long and (IMO) more user friendly. I think a lot of the DT/elite bloggers are working more toward seasonal postings and promoting their own brand/classes.
AND to be blunt, I'm tired of participating in blog hops in the hopes of winning a token (and NEVER) winning. I'm putting my efforts toward more productive for me pursuits!
That said, I was slightly surprised at the lack of much WCMD activity in general.
