Resolution to use older stamp sets
Some of us were talking about New Year's Resolutions and a few were interested in trying to make something using EACH set we own. I thought we could encourage each other along the way on a thread. I started working on using my stamp sets with a card using three sets today.
A CASE of Love Three down who knows how many to go!

I did use 3 stamps today that I haven't used before, but not on a card. I'm making a tutorial for digital cutting, so I won't be able to show anyone until my tutorial is finished. I'll post links once its done though.

I'm subbing!! ;) this was my goal last year, I just blogged about it and I didn't get to all the stamps so it's on my goals again this year!
I'm so glad I found this thread and will post my card tomorrow!

I love digging through the stacks and using old sets once in a while, like an old friend stopping by for a visit. Usually at Christmas time I go back to older beloved sets but this year I used only new sets. I feel like I need to make more cards and use the old sets even through Christmas is over! My stamping goals for 2014 are (1) use new sets right away for five projects each (2) organize older sets so they get used and make five cards/projects a month with them (3) finally sell the big boxes of sets I know I don't want anymore.

I'm on board, too! My only resolution this year is to MAKE time to MAKE things and comment more on what others make, so it's not much of a stretch to include the older sets (many of which I prefer to newer ones, anyway)... Should be a fun year!

I will join in as well...but like Sue, my stamps aren't arranged in sets, but by type. I'll have to adjust my plan to using stamps I haven't used yet. That will provide me with more than enough images to use for a long time, for sure!

I want to make 3 cards from each stamp set, including my clear stamps and use signle stamps I've not used in many years. PedalPower, I also want to make several Christmas cards each month.

I'd like to specifically try to make cards using older stamps that I haven't yet used. If I can't make it work, add that stamp (or set) to the pile to sell or give away.
I'm finding that some of the stamps I bought when I first started either aren't my style or have been replaced with a similar image that I like better. I want to purge stuff that doesn't really fit anymore, but before I do, I want to make sure. So I'm going to try to use the older stamps that have been sitting for a while.
I don't really know how often I want to try this. Maybe at least 5 per month (sets or stamps), assuming my resolution to stop falling behind on monthly birthday cards actually works.

I'm also considering making a Stamped images ornaments Christmas tree, we got a 2nd tree this year that is beside my stamping area. ... so I may try to do that as I make cards...one for the card, one for me sort of thing.

I did this a few years ago, and really enjoyed it. It really helped me see which sets I truly wanted to keep and which ones I needed to let go. And I did make my goal, just barely, of using every set I owned during that calendar year.
I was actually thinking of giving this a try again this year, though I know I won't be purging nearly as much stuff because I've become a lot wiser about my purchases the last few years. But first on my agenda for this year is to totally reorganize my craft area after the kids have gone back to school.

Julie and I did this kind of challenge along with a couple others and it was so rewarding! I have been in the midde of house building, family stuff and just hectic craziness so I just wanted to chime in with my moral support to you all, not actually undertake... I will again sometime though. Maybe when I get my new craftroom up and running.

I have been feeling an urge to do this as well- may not be able to use ALL of my retired sets since I have so many but will be trying to create at least 1-2 cards per month using my older sets (of which some have never seen ink yet!).
Thanks for the support thread- it is nice to know that I am not the only one :-)

I'm thinking about putting circle stickers on the stamp sets I've used so I can see the progress happening! I used two more on my sketch sample card!

Love this idea! I am working on an inventory list of my entire craft room and expect that it will take months to complete (in between other duties :-)) I plan on listing the stamp sets and noting the dates that I use them in an excel s/s - we will see if this works for me :-)
Thanks again everyone for the motivation and inspiration to use what we have already purchased!

The stamps we use don't have to be retired do they? I'm thinking it's just that we haven't used them in a long time but I wanted to make sure.

I'm guessing that since you refer to sets and retired sets that you are talking about SU stamps.
I don't own any so I cannot play along but I think I will play by myself using your idea. I have way too many stamps that have only seen ink when I stamped them into my catalogue.
Thanks for giving me a push in the right direction.

Oh, I don't think they have to be SU! I'm thinking they can be any stamps you haven't used in a while and use all your sets throughout the year.

I am sure that you could use any set you wish that may have been neglected or purchased whenever :-)
Since I am a SU! Demonstrator, I am planning on focusing this effort on my massive retired stamp inventory since my current sets are not that old (although I have a few of the current sets that have not seen ink yet either) :-)

It can be whatever you want it to be. I think the main goal is to put our stamps into action so retired or current, my goal is to use what I have already!

I just finished this card. The ribbon, embossing folder and dsp are all in the clearance rack now. The stamp set, A Round Array is in the current catalog but had never seen ink. I want to ink at least one stamp from each set this year, hopefully more than just one. This one is bright and sunny while it's 0◦ outside.

So cheery! I had that ef in my last shopping cart, but it didn't make the final list :( Love the big flower with the sentiment center on your pretty card.

I have done this at least twice. I have my sets alphabetized and I just start at A and work my way through. It's been great for me because my mojo comes and goes and this helps me find it when it's missing! :-) Sometimes I work with an old set that isn't my style any more and I just can't make it work. What then? Nobody really wants to buy old sets and I struggle with giving them away since I've made a substantial investment. I'm trying to change my attitude about that and have listed sets for give-away, but I admit I still struggle. One part of my brain says to just let them go and the other says what if I need it later?!? But, as I type this, I realize it's kind of like my skinny pants. They might as well go to someone who can use them because it will be a really long time (if ever) that I'll be able to use them! Hugs to all!

My LSS has a garage sale every now & then, and I got rid of a bunch of sets that weren't my style, I had something else similar or I'd bought for one specific purpose. I picked up a couple of 'old' sets, too, and it was fun to get something new to me. But I've got A LOT of sets downstairs that need to get used. I'm in.

Jennifer, I've never had trouble selling older stamps. There are always people who are new to crafting who are interested in the products that are 'old' to me. And then there's the people who just aren't motivated by having the 'latest & greatest.'
Both the stores around here do that. I've found, though, that there's a FB group for crafters in my community where I can get better prices. As a result, I've started posting stamps there and using the money for new stuff.

I actually seek out some of the older sets to buy! Not just Stampin'Up!, either - I'm an equal opportunity stamper
I go through my supplies and purge (more and more often, it seems) and pretty much just give things away. I'm too lazy to go through the trouble of listing, communicating, packaging, shipping, etc., to sell things and I often will keep one or two stamps from a set, which makes it difficult to sell, anyway.
My thought is that I enjoyed it while I had it, won't recoup my investment anyway, and sending things out into the "flow" opens a space for new things to flow my way, too.

I'm joining in but I'll do stamps I haven't used in a long time. I don't keep my stamps in categories but the results will be the same. When I did my purge I kept some stamps that I vowed to use so this is a good incentive.

I think I will also amend the idea to fit my needs. I have around 1000 sets so using all would be daunting, but I am going to start looking through all my sets and see what doesn't inspire me anymore and weed them out. If I can't come up with a card or project using one or more of the stamps it is leaving my house. (Trying to sound ruthless). Maybe I will read here how someone scored old SU sets at the goodwill and think I have made someone very happy.

I don't want to dissuade anyone from contributing to Goodwill or similar non-profits, but I would like to put in a plug for contributing to schools, nursing homes, Boys and Girls Clubs, scout troops, etc., instead. These organizations have continually shrinking budgets and can really use materials and tools to support their programs. Just another thought
