Default Looking for Detroit Area Stamp/Scrapbook Stores

I'll be staying in Southfield MI while DH is working next week. I've already got info on The Paper Hollow, My Craft Room, Scrappy Chic, and Stamp Peddler Plus and was wondering if I'm missing some. Any suggestions? I live around Indianapolis so we have Jo-Ann's, Michaels and Hobby Lobby so don't need any info on those, just local (within 50 miles) stores.

Also, if there are any other points of interest, I'd greatly appreciate info. I've scoped out some restuarants from Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

THANKS!

While I don't have stores to add I'm also interested in this information as I expect to be traveling to the Detroit area frequently in the next few years. I was there last spring for a conference and amazed by all the construction going on in the hospital area through to downtown. I understand midtown and downtown apartments are in high demand. Lots of popular eating places were really busy. its not downtown Chicago but it was an active city.

There's a big stamp convention in that area every August. But trust me, Stamppeddlar Plus is awesome! I could easily spend an afternoon in Northville. SO fun!

I've actually been to Stampeddler Plus. Our oldest son lives in Ann Arbor and last fall I finally had a chance to go to Northville. It's FABULOUS so I HAVE to go back. It's funny, before our son moved to AA, I had seen Stamp Peddler on a show called "You Live in What?" on HGTV and thought that if I had the chance, I needed to go there.

If you make it to Paper Hollow (geared towards cards), these two are also in the area and are geared towards scrapbooking but did have a few stamps the last time I was in the store:

I've seen the show, but never that episode. Now I have to look it up and see if I can find it! (For those that have never been to the shop, it is located in a former church building, with stained glass windows still in place. It's lovely!)

I'll be in the Detroit area at the end of July, so I'm bumping this so I can look once I'm there. I'm spending a week with my dad, so I may need a crafting break! Of course, maybe he'll come with me and that would be fun, too.

for downtown Detroit I highly recommend Slow's BBQ (don't go on a friday or saturday night or you will have to wait 2+ hours) and Bucarest Grill for the most amazing ethnic food you will ever eat!

I live two blocks outside of Detroit city limits so if you want more recommendations or any other information on the east side of the state let me know!

Oh also there is the happy scrapper in st. clair shores which is just East of Detroit. I haven't been there so I can't give any honest reviews. (It's fifteen minutes from my house, WHY haven't I been there?!?)

Thanks! I didn't have that one on my list. Looks like I'll be hitting it today.

Made it to seven Detroit area stores: My Craft Room (http://www.mycraftroom.com/), The Paper Hollow (http://www.thepaperhollow.com/), Remember When? (404 - Page Not Found, The Scrapbook Tree (Home, Scrappy Chic (Scrappy Chic, The Happy Scrapper (http://www.happyscrappershores.com/), and StampPeddler Plus Memories (http://www.stampeddler.com/). All were very nice. Remember When?, Scrapbook Tree, and Happy Scrapper were scrapbook oriented with some stamps, Scrappy Chic was pretty even between scrapbooking and stamping, StampPeddler heavier in the stamping department and My Craft Room was half stamping and half yarn.
All of them were worth visiting. I'd re-visit them all again with Stamp Peddler being high on the list and My Craft Room being at the bottom.

As for food, it was recommended to visit Buddy's Pizza. Definitely one of the better pizzas I've eaten.

Oh, and a funny story was that I had met the owner of The Paper Hollow at the Indianapolis Heirloom Convention in March. I was working the booth behind hers.

If anyone is interested in upstate Michigan shops, there are two I can recommend that are AMAZING.

Haveman True Value (no kidding, the front part of the store is ALL stamps/scrapping and a ton of Memory Box dies), Fremont, MI:

Haveman Hardware Inc. > Home

(see the tan tabs)

Inspiration Station, Ovid, MI: www.ovidscrapbooking.com

So, where is Fremont? Is it any where near Grand Rapids?

I forgot, they have the baby food festival from the 15th to the 18th with lots of activities and events in Fremont!

National Baby Food Festival

It is a very nice little town and a pretty drive from Grand Rapids.

Painfully aware of that. My son is moving there for medical school in a few weeks and we had a heck of a time finding something. College graduation discussion amongst parents of graduates heading there for grad work consisted of " have you found anything yet?", " if we find something with more bedrooms how about housing together?" We weren't even asking our kids what they wanted! LOL

Most of us took time that next week to make yet another trip to Detroit for housing searches. Thought we had it all resolved 3 weeks ago. Early this week we we told an apartment wouldn't be available until after school started because the person who was supposed to move out changed her mind at the last minute. The next availalbe unit would need some maintenance work so it would be a couple of weeks. That's now all resolved, we told them maintenance could work on a unit after he moved in but he had to have a place to sleep.

Stress does not make me crafty, just grouchy!

We live just outside of Detroit in Redford. My daughters both go to College for Creative Studies, so we are down in that area often. They are both living in the dorm thank goodness. I drove my oldest daughter back and forth the first year as she had just learned to drive, but after driving it myself I wouldn't have let her do it alone...way too stressful for a new driver.

My middle child is starting down there this year. At one point I suggested they get an apartment together, but THAT was not well received!

Detroit is an interesting hodgepodge. You can be in a really nice area, then drive two blocks and it's a wasteland. We are from Kalamazoo originally, so I only know the parts of downtown around CCS and a bit down by the Ren Cen. Always an adventure, especially with the construction on Woodward right now!

For some reason, the national baby food festival cracks me up.

It reminds me of my husband wanting my daughter to go to college in the town where the lentil festival is held. Lol. That man loves his lentils...

Phantom, where in Michigan are you? I'm heading to Grand Rapids area to drop my daughter at GVSU for the International Trumpet Seminar. I presume 131 is a pretty obvious road? How far do I need to travel to get to the store you mentioned? And yes, I know I can use Google Maps, but I am enjoying this conversation!

I'm not phantom but I can tell you 131 is a major road. It will feel like you are still on the interstate, divided 4 lanes, lots of traffic and semis from kalamazoo to Grand Rapids (GR). Less traffic as you get farther north. Fremont is maybe an hour or less north of GR.

Now, thinking about it, from Chicago you might take I94 to us31/i196 along the lakeshore as that will be a lot faster then traveling to us131 at Kalamazoo. Careful of road names as there is a big difference between 31 and 131. Hope that makes sense.

If you are taking the ferry across the lake to avoid Chicago then you will be coming to Grand Valley from the north.

Excellent description, Barb! Yes, 131 is a major highway - I've never had much traffic on a weekday and only back up with construction very near the city. It's a pretty highway to drive. Fremont is a bit west off of 131 but a nice road, lovely scenery and a sweet downtown. You may want to visit other shops there. Diane and her husband own Haveman Hardware and she is wonderful.

I think I missed that you are coming from the Chicago area - the ferry from Madison is the fast one and fun to take. (Although I'm a huge fan of the SS Badger farther north.)

Hope you have a fun and safe trip!

I didn't drive here - I flew into Grand Rapids. Now, I'm at my dad's house in Troy and checking out this list again. I think I will be able to go to Stamppeddlar since we are heading to Ann Arbor so my DD can tour U of M. My hubby is driving from ND to meet us and depending on time, we may be able to zip up to Haveman Hardware. I sure hope so - I'm needing a crafting fix!
