Here it is, the day after Valentines Day. I wandered into M's, and there by the front door was a rack of stuff for 70%off. Nothing I wanted, but around the back was Valentines ribbon for 60% off. I threw a few in my basket. 11 to be exact.
I picked up a couple of other things, and went to check out.
Only one register was open. I waited while someone returned something, two more in line behind me. Then it was my turn.
She rang up the 3 random items, then started on the ribbon. After several of them, I realized they were ringing at full price. I said "wait. Those should be 60%off." She looked at it, and asked if they all were. I said yes, they're all there, pointing to the display. She deleted one, then re-rang it at 60%off. She did two more.
Me: What about the others that you already rang?
Her: Oh, those too?
Me: Yes. All of the Valentines ribbon.
She started taking them out, deleting it, then re-ringing them and manually putting in the 60%off.
Me: Would it be easier just to start over?
Her: Yes. Let's do that.
At this point, she called for another cashier. (Thank goodness.)
Next, she called for a manager to do a void. In the mean time, she just continued deleting things. We got to the end, so she cancelled the void call.
Her: I hope you aren't in a hurry.
Me: No, I'm not.
So, she gets the order rung up correctly. I think it came to about $17. She tells me to put in my phone number. I do, and pull out a M's gift card. I ask her what to do with it.
She pulls out the receipt, and hands it to me, thanking me for my patience. Then,
Her: Wait. Did you slide your card?
Me: No. I didn't pay. It never said to slide my card. (I'm still holding the gift card.)
Her: I need to call the manager.
He comes, and verifies that the transaction was ended, and that it didn't take my card.
Me: Yes. I didn't pay.
Manager: you have to re-ring the whole transaction.
She prepares as I dump the bag of things back on the counter. She rings up the 3 random things and says
Her: You know what? You have been so nice about this. I'll give you all the ribbon for a flat price of $4.00. I hesitantly say ok. Then she says she'll give it to me for $3.00.
I don't know how she justified it, but she scanned one roll, typed in $3.00, and hit total.
So, I got 11 rolls of ribbon.
Originally $1.99 x 11 =$21.89
60%off $1.194 x 11= $13.13
Flat rate. $3.00
The other day at Walmart I had a cartful of groceries. I also took to the checkout a loaf of bread whose bag had a knife slit down the whole loaf to get it off the shelf. I handed it to the cashier and said, "The bag on this loaf of bread is completely slit on the side." She just looked at me and said, "Do you want to buy it?" "No, I do not," I said. Shopping at our Walmart is so frustrating!
There are probably people who would have bought it for half price.
On that same trip to M's, I found a Wal Mart bag on one of the shelves. I picked it up,and there were 5 or 6 items in there. They were Recollections, so I know they were from Michael's, not Wal Mart. At first I just put it back, then I picked it back up and handed it to an employee. He looked in it, and said he'd take it up front.
The more I thought about it, the more I thought that someone must have been trying to steal the stuff, maybe thought someone saw them, and ditched the bag.
wow-what a bargain! Yes, i have always found if you are nice to people, they will be back. well, most of them anyway. There's always some lemons in life who you say hello to and they just cold stare you.
Yes, I think you are right Lynnewithane...that sounds exactly like what was happening with that bag.
