Try as I might, I simply cannot seem to keep my work space tidy while in a crafting frenzy. I'm like Edward Scissorhands when he's pruning the hedges/trees -- bits and pieces of stuff flying everywhere and collecting all around my work area.
My area is always a disaster. I pick up only when I can't find things (grin). I don't think you are the only one. Every time I organize it takes me two months to find anything.
You're definately not the only one. Not only do I send stuff flying everywhere but my workspace seems to shrink. I might start out with a clean 2' x 8' work area but when I'm done you'd never know there's a desk under all my supplies.
I get so excited about the finished product, I just leave everything where I laid it.
I've tried putting stuff away as I use it, but--like you--I end up getting too excited about the project to maintain that level of discipline for very long.
My work space is very messy. Right this very minute there is not even a 6x6" of clear space on my desk. But 90% of my supplies and tools have a designated home for them to live when I do get around to putting them away. So when I do a tidy up it relatively quick and painless, and I can find it again when I need it. I'm still working on the other 10% to make it more functional. So you could say I live by a modified motto of a place for nearly everything and everything eventually in its place.
I don't worry about being messy on my desk, and I have a high tolerance for the chaos there. I can't work with a clean desk anyway, lol. I have a lower tolerance for disorganized storage solutions.
...down.... is a good thing....right? I'm an Aussie and I'm not familiar with the phrase.
Sorry... I forget that not everyone is familiar with our lingo. Yes, it means I am in agreement with your "modified motto" and could easily adopt it as my own. :-)
The kitchen table is piled two feet high with stamping stuff! I have NO room on it to stamp! I have about ten ideas I want to work on so I keep pulling out stuff and it ends up on the kitchen table because that's where the best light is. If I put stuff away after I make swaps and go to gatherings I might be able to find things when I need them! LOL!
Of course you are the ony one!! And not only that, we all craft in those beautiful studios we all have seen pictures of where everything is colour coordinated and stored in custom made storage units ;)............
A friend of mine once gave me a pretty clear acrylic paper weight with the words: I'm To Busy To Be Neat! I have not seen it on my desk for about 2 years!!
You are not alone. I prefer to think of it as "being in good company". I try to put everything away when I'm done, but what most often happens is that it gets moved from my desk to the twin bed in my craft room that doesn't have a guest sleeping in it most of the time.
I keep a large basket on the floor next to my table. Once I am done with an item I put it in the basket. When I am done crafting I put everything in the basket away.

Since I type this post some five hours ago, I finished labeling my new tool arrangement which I've beta tested for the past couple of weeks and decided it was a keeper........which led to me clearing my desk! *shock* I'm almost blinded by the light shining off the glass top, lol. I'm going to take a photo of it before it looks like a rats nest, which I'm guessing will be in about another 6 hours. ;)
In case you're wondering, 50% of the mess had a home to go to, 25% was just rubbish that needed binning and the other 25% is just shoved in a bag to be sorted later. I am getting better at being organized. Yay!

This was me (which is why I rarely crafted) until my sweet hubby converted a room in our basement to a crafting area.

I've got my own craft room, but the decor & organization are another story -- I sometimes wonder if I'll EVER call it done.

Phew! Finally something I can blame my mess on! Being from New Hampshire! Genius!
There are three of us New Englanders in this thread, so there must be something to it. ;-)

I figure I have 2 choices.
1. I could clean/organize/re-organize my craft room OR
2. Stamp more cards and projects!
I choose the latter!!!
I'm with you!

Agreed!

I wish I were this disciplined. I have started using what I call "project baskets." I bought some of those cheapy, low profile, plastic baskets at Wally World, and I organize my various ongoing projects into them. They're even stackable.

Wow ... you have been a busy bee! "Blinded by the light" -- lol ... Yay, is right! I guess this means there's hope for the rest of us.

This is a rare event. The planets must be aligned right and the wind blowing the the right direction, lol. I couldn' t plan for this. Now I'm doing a bit of redecorating of the room, or one corner of it at least. I'm on a roll.

Surely you jest !!!!! I'm all over the place and loving every minute of it. I have a very detailed job and when I get into my creative space anything goes LOL

Welll ladies I don"t know what came over me, but now my table is clean I feel like I shouldn't be here, lol. I'm now sitting back having a coffee and looking at the shine. Ahhhh. It looks pretty but I'll feel more inspired to create when it gets messed up a bit.
Mine is SO bad I once lost the item I was working on! I called DH to help me find it. I got side tracked cutting or whatever and the image I just spent a whole day on was gone! The table is 6 1/2 feet long by 4 foot wide! He found it. If it makes you feel better, I've never stamped with a friend in a well organized craft room. We are all alike and if you are having any fun at all- it's a mess!
I leave projects out until they're finished but end up with a stack of papers that I've printed and half used or discarded, at the moment the stack is a couple of inches high!
I feel like I am in a war zone right now. I can't find anything and there is no place to work. It's too hot to clean today. Misery loves company.

Fun reading all of the comments. I have a small work area that has to have things put away or there is no space to work. Is it neat-of course not. Don't we always have something that is in progress--or at least that is what I tell myself. Thanks ladies for making a fun start to my day.

Oh. My. Gosh. I really must remember to stop posting when I'm tired and/or distracted -- geographical boundaries. It's only taken me three posts (and counting) to get it right!

I am always amazed at how something can become "lost" in such a small area (relatively speaking) -- and yet it happens more than I'd care to admit! And not just with crafting supplies ... keys, glasses, cell phone.

If my left-over pieces are large enough, I put them back into their respective hanging folders (eventually). If they aren't, I've taken to using one of those low-profile baskets I mentioned earlier to just throw them in. Then, whenever I need a test piece or layering piece or whatever, I grab one from there.

Still looking at the clean table.....bored! *sigh*
Too funny! Did you end up getting out of your my-desk-is-too-clean-to-work-on creative slump?

This feeling is what prompted me to start this thread! I'm working on a b-day card for my mom that involves lots of fussy cutting and multiple tools/supplies. It finally got to the point where my work space was too cluttered to work in. So, of course, instead of cleaning it up, I got online to commiserate with other messy crafters. lol

It has been a great conversation! So good to know I'm not the only messy crafter out there -- I needed the validation. But alas, I must do some household chores and then clean up that mess in my work space so I can continue with my project. Will check back later. Enjoy the day, y'all!
Deb, you are the Queen of Multiple Posts. {Insert crown here} I have never been able to manage that feat.
Yes, this has all been a great read! From my laptop sitting between my stack of extra paper to stamp and new Holiday catalogue, and my cutter. My coffee cup is just to my right nestled close to my scissors and a bag of cinnamon hearts (not kidding). An embossed butterfly is lying unmoving to my left.
Deb, you are the Queen of Multiple Posts.{Insert crown here}
I humbly accept!
It always bugs me when someone puts something out there and then never says another word. I like peeps to feel as though we're having an actual conversation. If I'm gonna ask the question, I feel like I should interact when folks answer it. And I don't want anyone to feel left out. :-)
But it IS hard to keep up!!!! Now I really am gone like the wind to get some stuff done. lol
