I love looking for new ways to make things and when I get in a rut it always helps pull me out when I see neat things people have made homemade to add to their creations! So, what are your favorite sites, tutorials, pictures of homemade embellishments for your cards and creations?
Newspapers and brown paper and bp bags. I like to gesso over them, and then paint and stamp. Cut out, crumple and do whatever you like with them. Sometimes I just apply a layer of versamark and embossing powder/UTEE and use them for stuff too. I like to stamp words on cotton grossgrain. You can also add stamp ink to colour it which can be better than ribbons you buy - esp for guy cards. I cut them with pinking shears and they look way better.
I like using stuff from the hardware shops. Washers can be stamped with a variety of stayzon inks or even coloured and embossing powder applied for all sorts of effects. I love playing with everythiing.
I am presently looking at doing a series of mini arts with train tickets from the local railways. that will be fun and a big challenge.
Flowers, flowers, flowers and butterflies......love 'em!
Great thread - hope everyone keeps the ideas coming.......
I follow a blog called Lollychops and she has some lovely tutorials on making flowers. Here is one on a crocheted flower (I converted it to Australian crochet instructions - our crochet terms are different here) which I made and it looks so cool. Scroll down for the crocheted butterflies too. And check this link to more flowers on Lollychops' blog (keep scrolling down - there are quite a few flowers to see).
Also, another embellie I love is a ribbon butterfly courtesy of Sue Nelson from her HeartPrints website (aka Susie B here on SCS). See this link for Sue's tutorial.
I like coloring my own brads with embossing powder. I also make a lot of my own flowers with punches and the rolled rose technique. Super easy! I use lots of ribbon too.
I enjoy painting on paper and paper towels which I learned from Traci Bautista, whose book is "Collage Unleashed". You simply apply paint with a brayer (the more colors the better), then doodle or stamp your designs on it. Voila - handmade designer paper!
Homemade Stickles. Crystal Effects, mixed with a touch of glitter and a drop of re inker. Stir together in a small container and apply with a toothpick. Very pretty. And you can make it to match any color you need.

Oh wow ladies, these are awesome!! Thank you for the stickles recipe! I am going to look at LollyChops blog, thanks for sharing, the coloring of brads is a great tip too!
oh i LOVE making my own embellies! in fact our current magazine issue focuses on this!
here are my faves:
polymer clay #1
felt die cuts
fabric diecuts
felt and pompom flowers
ghost shapes from plastic product packaging and my sizzix or cricut
Ohhh Heather this is a great tutorial, thanks for sharing! I was also thinking if the ribbon didn't have thread through it like the one you mentioned, one could thread some through it with a small needle and pull. Love these ideas! It's getting my creative mind flowing! Thanks ladies!
Creating Keepsakes magazines have tutorials each month for embellies. Check it out. They are simple and cool. One I got from them several years back is to save your ribbon scraps. Just make a loop with the ribbon and staple the ends together. Use these to make flowers. I have made the middle with paper, material, cork board. Anything you can think of. Easy and very cheap since it would have been thrown away to begin with.
I love making ribbon roses, and rosettes! I have a tutorial on my blog here http://sweeetdesignsbycheryl.blogspo...tutorials.html I have others that are not listed under the tutorial area, they are on my sidebar for the roses I believe. I need to update all my video tutorials
Becca at Amazing Paper Grace has a great video tutorial for making a great teabag type folded flower. She used it on a card a couple of days ago and it looks fabulous
Great thread, thanks for starting it! My ideas are more frugal than creative, but I cut up blister packaging and use it to layer on cards sometimes. I use StazOn to stamp on it, and place it above another stamped layer. I also have been known to save special ribbon from gifts and use it on cards.
Great ladies, thanks for sharing! Bink frugal is great too, lots of us are on tight budgets and need to know what to use from around the house! Thanks for sharing!!

Oh! I remembered something else I've been exploring recently, and that's die cutting ribbon! I get the extra wide stuff (3" or so) and die cut it with a steel-rule die.
Thank you Cassandra! I love working with ribbons, I know I have other video's but havent had time or a chance to move them in the tutorial page thing....hehehe
Hope you have a Happy 4th hun! Im hoping I can craft today hehehe, before we have family over.
Happy 4th of July to all!
Hugs,
cheryl
I've been really into making my own flowers lately. It's a great way to use up my scraps. My latest favorite is making a dogwood flower out of punches. Here are a few other flowers I like to make.
I also have several really cool flower projects marked as my favorites. Check them out too. All of them are inexpensive & fun to make. Ihave a bunch of them pre-made in old stampin up containers & I just grab them when I need them. JIL
I like using pop-tabs or pop-tops, whatever you like to call them, from soda cans. Here is a card a made a LONG time ago.
Gina, my grandson would never let me get away with this. I collect these tabs for him, as he donates them to buy wheelchairs. But I do love the creativity. I wonder if he would notice if I made him a card using them.
I've been thinking about creating some clear embellishments using thick acetate and my nesties. Polyshrink is also great, but I always forget that I have it!
Thank you for starting this topic and thank you, ladies, for sharing your instructions! I've felt like I was in a creativity rut lately and now I'm excited to try some of these!
Well here is a goer: this afternoon I was doing a baby boy page, and thought a teddy would be nice. The only suitable size that I had were some plastic pink buttons. I looked at them for a while and put some light brown stamp ink on the bear let the layer dry, and put another one onto it. then I threw it into the tub with the embossing powder and heated it. Voila, one appropriately coloured bear button, exactly the right size. I used a permanent marker to make the eyes black and glued it on.

I did just that, it was a tiny bit tedious, but I liked the flowers: The ribbon I used was gatherered at both edges, and flat in the middle, but any ribbon would work.
I REALLY like all of the flower ideas! I think that flower embellishments add so much to a project. I just recently made silk flowers that turned out really cute and am anxious to use them in many different ways. I show how I did it on my blog: http://www.jennudesigns.blogspot.com
