Obviously, I am missing something--why would you unmount your stamps after they've been put on the wood? What is the bebefit of using unmounted stamps vs. mounted stamps?
for me it was the ease of placement, I know better exactly where the image will go.
the unmounted takes up so much less room, that they are all at my fingertips, I don't have to search all around to find the one I want, this saves time and I am more likely to use them then.
For me, unmounted serves a couple of purposes...one is because I can then store in CD cases and they take up less room and secondly if I unmount them and cut close to the image I can see better where I am stamping with them (almost like using a clear stamp).
It takes a few seconds to stick a photo mount onto it and then onto an acrylic block but I'm used to doing it and the benefits outweigh the hassle IMO.
storage! It was either stop purchasing stamps, sell some of the ones I had, or find another option. I can store the same amount of stamps in about 1/3 of the space.
1. Easier to store--no wood--several storing options
2. Easier to clean--no wood to worry about getting wet or stained
3. Easier to stamp with--can see outline of stamp
4. Cheaper than wood mounted--most times half the price
5. Cheaper shipping--no heavy wood
6. Can put more than one stamp on acrylic block at one time
7. I am out of my comfort zone when I have to use wood mounted

For me it was all about space. I had to find a way to lock up or get all my supplies very high off the ground. DD learned that she really liked playing with mounted (block) stamps, and all my supplies were dissapearing. (she was 2 at the time) Now my Stamps are safely in a over the door CD rack I got at container store. I have fit over 50 sets in 2 small racks. Gotta love that space saving- not to mention money from replacing lost stamps. lol

I totally agree with these reasons! Especially being able to see exactly where I am stamping...

My first reply! For me unmounting the stamps was because of weight and space. We were full-timing in our RV. It was going UM or give up my stamps and that's no choice at all!
for me, it was all about saving space. I have more than 175 SU and CTMH sets, along with all of my other misc stamps, and they all just took up so much space. I love storing them in CD cases, it makes it really easy to find the sets I want.
As far as the wood, I sell them (and the plastic cases the SU sets come in)on ebay!

So, what is this photo mount you speak of? If I understand correctly, you don't use the cling or the Tack It Over and Over, but some other method of adhering your stamp to your acrylic block? I'm intrigued..please share!!
For me it is a price issue- I buy unmounted because it is less expensive. If UM is more expensive, I don't buy from that company. The space issue is an incredible bonus!
But I am not unmounting sets I already have- I am just only buying unmounted stamps from now on. (If SU comes up with something spectacular- I might buy it- but it's a huge Maybe, I'd also mount it. I haven't bought SU stamps in a long time- yet I've still managed to spend a ton of money with SU)
I've gone from a 4 ft tall storage unit to a binder (for words) and a 1 ft CD storage container that sits on a desk. I LOVE IT! It's so much easier to find what I want and keep it close to my workspace.
I also love how closely I can trim my stamp and see to place it on my project.
I haven't been able to toss out the blocks and cases yet - they are in the attic and I could offer them to a prospective buyer if they want the blocks. I'll probably sell them next year.

So there are "traditional" rubber stamps that do not come on blocks, but you use them the same as the newer "clear" stamps by attaching them temporarily to acrylic blocks? You can see a closer outline than when using wood, but not as good as clear.... Where have I been? Also - how do you attach and reattach them to the blocks? I understand that the clear ones basically just 'cling' to the blocks, but how do the UM rubber ones stick?

Some people have been using double stick tape, or poster tape, or JoAnn's Tack It Over and Over (TIOAO) which is a repositionable glue on their rubber or on the acrylic block. I mounted all of my stamps to a product by TAC similar to EZ mount which is a foam that is sticky on the side the rubber adheres to and not on the other side. The not sticky side clings to the block.
I just ordered some bellas (have you seen the bellas? Oh! Adoable!! They are like what you are talking about...just rubber...no foam or wood...) from www.stampingbella.com though and I can't wait to try them without mounting them. I hear the images come out great just with the rubber alone, by using a double stick tape on your block.
I unmounted because I moved to Spain and wanted to bring all of my stamps with me in a suitcase! I love it! I will never go back to wood. It's way too perfect being able to see the image, and even being able to put several images on one block (i.e. like spelling out a word with an alphabet set) inking them all at once, stamping them all at once, and cleaning them all at once, then removing them and putting them back in their spot on an acetate sheet. It's great. I lovey! HTH!

Space and weight were the reasons - we're military and limited to a certain weight allowance when we move. We also tend to live in small quarters without extra space for crafting or storage.
The other benefits I've come to enjoy, like ease of placement and being able to group images on a block, are bonus.

I've started unmounting for all the reasons listed. A new stamp store opened here about 2 years ago and I was surprised to see nothing but wood mounted stamps. I asked about unmounted and the owner thought I was crazy! She's recently started carrying acrylic stamps and was excited to tell me about her new "discovery" - unmounted rubber!
I have limited space and decided it was my best option in order to buy all the stamps I want! I've been slowing unmounting my sets that were on wood for roughly a year now. I have a three drawer dresser left to go......as I buy, I just put those stamps directly to vinyl cling. See the pic; I love is wall mounting CD cabinet. Not the best picture, but isn't it pretty?
