I saw a beautiful card today. The sentiment was from Altenew; it said, "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle."
I'm confused. Sending it to someone in the midst of a hard battle doesn't seem to make sense. If you send it to someone who isn't, they might take it as saying you don't think they are kind.
I wouldn't send a card with that sentiment to anyone I guess. If I had a card like that, I'd cover up that sentiment before sending it. To me, that kind of quote is more like something that was meant to be stamped in a personal journal, to remind oneself to be kind...

I agree with you, and I agree with Sophie. There are many lovely quotes that are inspirational, but I would feel kind of "preachy" if I sent someone a card with something like that as a sentiment.

Totally agree! I've seen more than a few sentiments that I think are pretty insulting, from my point of view, and I would never aim them at anyone other than myself (and even then, I would think I'm being pretty hateful :eek
I'm stretching here to think of some possibilities, but maybe the cardmaker made it for him/herself. Or was practicing a technique or design and the sentiment just fit well in the space in the design. Or was intending to enter a challenge or such that requested a quote or brand of product.
I agree with you and Sophie. I would never send that to a person. I think it is more of a reminder to oneself in one's journal.
I know if I got it, the first thing that would come to my mind is did I insult the sender in some way or someone else we both know? It would disturb me quite a bit. I would be on the phone in a flash asking.
I would never send that sentiment in a card, but I would use it as an inspiration in a journal or a book of inspirational sayings as a gift.
I bought a set of stamps that included "You would think that with all your multiple personalities at least one would be likeable" - that stamp is in the trash.
Stamphappy1650....Oooh! that is snarky, but funny! It's one of those comments you wish you had the cojones to say (send) to someone, but never would. Sadly, I can think of a couple of people who probably should be put in their place with a card like that.

I would love to send that card to my sister! At first she would take offense, but then laugh because she knows it was a joke. My BFF too, she'd pee her pants laughing.

I just saw that stamp somewhere last weekend! Either Michaels or acmoore. Those are the only two places I went.
I bought the set at Michaels (Dylusions). I do have a lot of snarky stamps and some I only make things just for myself because they crack me up and others I can send to my friends that are as sick as I am.

See now-if that said with all MY personalities...that would be self deprecating and funny! Like a Maxine thing. I could see maybe sending that to the right person who would get it was a joke in the YOUR format but that would be so limited as to make it not worth it. At least it was part of a set.
I have to agree that "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." would be pretty awkward on a card. Maybe, maybe, if you felt a friend had been a little judgmental, but still...
I think the stamp would take on a completely different meaning if it were in a scrapbook on a page with a photo of a person who was fighting cancer. It would be more of a "I hope everyone is kind to my loved one, because look at what he/she is going through."
It's still not my cup of tea though.
lol regarding the multiple personalities stamp. I don't think I would ever send that one to anyone, but it made me laugh so hard.
It reminds me of one of my favorite Riley & Company stamps:
"When you really, really want to slap someone, do it. Just make sure to say 'mosquito' when you do."
My girlfriend loved that one.

I think you ought to pull that stamp out of the trash and send it to me, because I know several people I could send it to! Wicked sense of humor, and my friends know it... There are even a couple of family members I could send it to... although with one, it reaches pretty close to home...

I would never, ever send a card with that sentiment to a friend or enemy. But ...
I would use the stamp in a journal, on a scrapbook page or on some little decoration for my desk. The sentiment would not be for others, but to remind me that I am not the only person having a bad day (or week or month or year).
The one about multiple personalities ... hmmm... I can't think of a way I would use such a thing, except as a conversation piece. I think it is a great conversation starter.

Compared to you - we (Switzerland, Germany, Austria...) all are rude. Just as a fact
I would use this stamp on a card-set that I would give as a gift, you know those cards withs pictures of stones on it, flowers, bridges... photographies.
I guess I would create cards in this "Zen"-style with sentiments like that.
We like that, you can buy those cards on every corner.
And if you can buy it on every corner, they sell well
Or I would use it for a calendar with wisdoms.
I guess the difference is if it's on the front (usualy that would be okay) or inside (that wouldnt't be okay) of the card.
I'm sure that no one of my familiy or my friends would think, they do something wrong if I would send a card with this sentiment.
It's just a card and just a sentiment. As long ot's not inside of the card
Aaaand stamps like that

Yes I love beautyful and harmonic cards.
But I like the others, too.
So don't kill stamps like that, I do have space and ideas for that ;)
Submit it to Take Ten magazine. I think that is why I like that magazine. Seeing sayings like this are helpful and inspirational to myself. But I agree sending it to an individual could definetly be taken the wrong way.
I have a ton of close friends and relatives (I do love them but. . .) subject to great drama (!) who call me for advice about this terrible thing that happened to them or that nasty person who did such and such to them. In a New York minute, I'd send them a card with that sentiment!
I could see myself using this on the front of a card that I send to someone going through a hard battle themselves, then writing on the inside something like, "I pray you are being showered with much kindness during this tough time."
I like to use quotes on my cards and I have never given them too much thought other than if I like them. I think this quote is pretty!
I am guilty of buying stamps at conventions that make me laugh or catch my heart in some way... I get them home and realize that there is no way on God's green Earth I can make a card for ANYBODY using them.
Example: "If you can't be the sharpest tool in the shed at least you can be the hoe"
but I do have a really cute stamp of a farmer, holding a hoe.... hmmmm

Oh man, that is too funny: "at least you can be the hoe"........I know a friend who would crack up getting that card. Thanks for my laugh for the day!

I laughd out loud at this! I have a few friends I would definitely send that to! Laughter is good medicine!

Ummm...I would kinda like to send a card with that sentiment to a few people I have encountered! LOL
I agree the other sentiment is really not appropriate for a project......idk
I must have at least a few Swiss genes...

I thought I'd share a way that I use some of my favorite funny sayings. I display this in my kitchen as kind of my mood indicator as it has a combination of funny and inspirational sayings. This version is tame since visitors see it but I want to make another one for my stamp room of my really snarky stamps.

Maybe we should start a new fad - Snark Stands
Ha! Well, those are actually only gently snarky to me, pretty adorable. Humor is so subjective

I didn't make a version with the snarky quotes - just funny ones that I knew wouldn't offend some of the gentler souls that come to my classes. The next version I make will be the snarky ones ;)
I have always loved this saying and tried very hard to live by it for the 35 years since I read it the very first time. I would absolutely love this card.

What am I missing.
Like you, I would not send a card stamped with this sentiment. But I must admit, I do have a couple of unkind family members that could use a reminder like this. I wouldn't have the nerve to actually send it because of the drama it would stir up but it is a tempting thought.

I think all families must have people like that. At least mine does. I always try to think: "Wouldn't you hate to be them, and be so unhappy and uncharitable all the time?"

This is an interesting discussion. I've seen the Altenew set, really liked the quote. However, prior to reading this thread I hadn't thought about how it might come across on a card.
I think to me it just resonated the same way a lot of Biblical quotes do in stamp sets -- they are inspirational thoughts, rather than direct messages to the recipient. I think if I did have the set, I would use it on the front of a card where on the inside I was thanking/complimenting someone for the kindness they show others. In other words, telling them that I see them as being the embodiment of that sentiment. That they inspire me just like those words do.
That's just my take. I agree that the more likely use would be for a journal, a scrapbook page, an inspirational hanging, etc. And now that I think about it, I believe I've seen a fair number of "motivational sayings" in stamps that might provoke the same question? Hmm. Interesting!
I would use it on the front of the card if it made sense...for example if I was thanking someone for helping me in my difficult situation I would put on the inside, "Thanks for being there for me" or something along those lines.
