I covered a pringles can with patterned paper, ribbon and embellishments, then cut small slits all over it and put ribbon in it and pulled the different colors of ribbon through the slits so I would know what is in the container. Now when I want a piece or ribbon I pull my choice through the slit and cut to my desired length.
I also covered a pringles can with patterned paper, placed an old distilled water bottle down in it to be my vase and I use it to hold flowers.
It's amazing what you can do with what you would normally throw away. Nothing is safe from a crafters hands.

If I walked and thought about all the things that I'd threw away, I wouldn't have any room in my house. I do save some things. It's just hard when your mind says "I can make that, or this" I have alot of things in my extra attic for recycling things.

I don't really recycle because i live in a small condo, but i did grab a cute tag off my son's jeans (i think i got them from costco) for a scrapbook layout.. it was made of heavy-duty chipboard and the 'string' was jean material!

. I've reused other things before but never a panty liner box! I can't figure it out. Is this a new high for the recycling part of me or a new low on my cheapskate side?
Chiming in on the panty liner theme: My housekeeping high came when I used maxi pads on my Swiffer Wet Jet. The sticky on the pad holds nicely while I mop. The wings fold over the sides and stick nicely. The thing is super absorbent. The extra long pad cover the entire mop head. The maxi pad is disposable. The maxi pad is waaaaaaayyyyyyyy cheaper than the Swiffer pads. I gave myself an award for this idea. ha ha.

I realized it when I cut the ribbon ties out of my pink robe cause they were pretty and just the PERFECT shade of coral! Oh, and I also cut the drawstring out of my pajama pants...it was the BEST chocolate twill!! Yeah, sick. I know.
Jutta, I can tell we all tend to think alike. This morning, I emptied the last of the Nesquick into my son's milk and looked at the container and said, I could cover this with DP and use it to put a gift in for someone. It's a nice rounded shape and I could put a t-shirt or boxers in or something like that. I put it the recycling bin for now but I have until Thursday to pull it out, which I probably will. I just usually don't have a place to store stuff I want to recycle. Very limited on space.
You could cover this and make a nice Candy pail for your son (paint cans come too mind). My girls are almost done with their nesquick too....hmmmm.
This is a wonderful thread -- I have been recycling forever, I can't seem to throw things out if it could be reused. My DH on the other hand thinks I am crazy - right up to the time he needs something I have rescued from the trash. Reuse is the way to go -- I agree GO GREEN

I take my microwave-popcorn boxes and cereal boxes, and cut off the top halves. Then I punch some holes near the top edges of the bottom part, loop some ugly ribbon through (so it is kind of like an ugly boxy purse), and use these to carry cards that I make for a friend (for her to use). I do admit that I don't bother to try to pretty up these boxes because I don't want her to feel guilty if she throws the box away after using up all the cards.
I've got to try the potato bag, veggie bag background. I have used cereal boxes in my cuttlebug, but hadn't thought of foil from yogurt. I'm going to have to try that one, too. It is fun to reuse things. I used a large size green bag can for my ribbon holder (Ribbon Can by rj77 at Splitcoaststampers) and always use little cans covered with paper for treats or things like that. It works, it's cheap, and I already have the stuff!
Let's see... I have saved baby food jars, plastic Gerber containers w/ lids, oatmeal boxes, choco milk cans, baby formula cans, Pringles cans...I could go on and on. My moment of truth came when I found myself getting after DH for using the "pop top" tab on the top of a can to open it. How could he not know that if he used my Pampered Chef opener (safety can opener) instead, I could have added that can to my collection waiting to be covered and reused?! It was then that I knew that I had gone over the edge!!
I'm right along with y'all. I save Frappuccino bottles, cereal boxes, gum boxes, band aid tins/boxes, pringles cans, I steal coasters from restaurants (Olive Garden has round ones!), ..this is just a tiny sampling of my stash. It seems nothing gets by me now without me thinking "How can I make that cute?"
I've asked this question before, but I think this might be a good place to ask again.
Has anyone thought of something to do with the inserts that came inside the punch box tins that SU sold?

I just did this, too! It was a beautiful black satin... I was embarrassed by it, too...
I know what you mean. I found some washcloths that I could donate to my church for a health kit project we do and scored a bonus for myself. They were tied with a plain twill tape which I added to my stash. It was a win, win situation!
Yes, it is kind of funny the things we recycle. I save, International Coffee tins and cover them, they make great banks, candy containers and I've also used them to put gift cards in. Since that is the coffee I drink, figured I ought to do something with the tins and my grandkids love them. I also save the clear plastice mayonnaise containers, haven't used them yet, but I'm still thinking about them. Also, the Crystal Light pastice containers, both large and small, again, still thinking about them. So if anyone has some ideas for these containers, please share.
These International tins are great for storage. Years ago they changed the top of the tin - it used to be straight (much better for storage) and added a kind of lip. I even called the company to complain.
Back to the topic. The foil like top is great to mat an image or emboss in the Cuttlebug.
I have said this on other threads - I even resort to buying new (huge) gift bags at the dollar store for embossing.
I just fished the packaging from my daughters new flat iron out of the trash. Shiney mirror like card board. I save any nice ribbon, the clear plastic pkg
from cricut carts etc, meat trays, cardboard from work, non confidential waste copies from work (I use the backs to protect my work area when stamping) Could someone tell me what they do with the plastic? I am running out of room and will probably take it to my stamp club and make it "free to good home." Thanks! Bev

Any ideas for Pace Picante jars? They have that funky shape that seems to me to complicate it as far as covering with paper, and they're too tall for my colored pencils, etc. But we go through lots of Picante sauce!

OK, now I don't feel too bad. My first thought when I read the original post was: She used the panty liners with reinkers to make stamp pads!

I love this thread! I have to add two things to my previous post. I have quite a reputation in my family for "repurposing" (my term--not their's!!) things that others would throw away. The funniest comment about this came from my son when he was thirteen. Glitterbabe commented on picking up pieces of metal from the street. I have done this for decades, and used many bits of rusty metal in my artwork. My family and I were in the car moving from Wisconsin to New Mexico about 20 years ago. Ahead of us I noticed a truck with an open bed piled high with rusty mufflers. Just at that moment, my 13-year-old son yelled out, "Dad, stop the car! This may be the last time mom will be able to get any rusty metal!"
The other instance was several years ago when I worked for a prominent music conservatory in Philadelphia. I lived three blocks from my work in center city. One day on my walk home I noticed a box with the garbage in front of an architects firm that was filled with rolls of blueprints. I wanted so badly to snatch them, but I had had a board meeting that day and was afraid one of our board members would see me going through the trash. I left them there and regretted it afterward. They would have been so cool to use as background for cards or in collages!
I'm in my sixties, the youngest in a 20-year span of 8 children, so my mother not only lived through the depression, but did so with a large family to feed. I grew up with the mantra of that time: "Use it up; wear it out; make it do; or do without!" I can't bear to throw out something that I or someone else could use. Pat

Target, right? Someone gave the stack to my daughter for college. (I guess they thought she was going to get really dirty.) I snagged the ribbon right away.
I have never been a Velveeta fan. I had to buy some for a potluck recipe. I realized that the bottom portion of the box (which is quite sturdy) makes great drawer dividers and pen/marker holders. They are also perfect to store Stickles in. Needless to say we now make most of our mac & cheese with Velveeta. The funny thing about this is the other day DH almost threw an empty Velveeta box away and DD yelled "No, mommy needs that for her stamping stuff".
I have been known to root through the cardboard boxes at Sam's Club. Some of the boxes make great magazine or paper holders. I just cut them on an angle and cover with fabric.
The wooden crates from Clementines are great for gift giving. You can just repaint them and it makes a cute gift box or storage crate.

Funny posts! I'm glad that I'm not alone. I think I just recently caught this bug. I made pencil cans for 25 of teachers, secretaries, principals. etc. at my husband's school (he is a middle school counselor). I couldn't see throwing away a bunch of perfectly good veggie, soup & tomato sauce cans. They loved them! I thought it was a great way to start off a new year.
Also, I just posted pics of some recycles vases I made. This one is made from a salsa bottle. I just love the shape!
Oh my word, thank you for the Clementine crate idea!!!!! We eat a crate a week when they are in season and I feel so bad throwing it away. I never thought to paint it and reuse it....wow....now I've got so many ideas for those things!!!! Thank you!!!
This is sooooooo funny and I love it all - I am glad I'm not that CRAZY when I read all of the above, I am known for 'boxes' of any shape, colour or form, cos I use them in all my crafts!! I use the inside of envelope flaps that have a gold or silver lining (Xmas or Wedding invitations) and use these for cards. Mmm I used those Ikea small pencils (which I covered with paper) for my notepads!
I knew I had gone over the edge when I saved the little insert boxes that hold the different sized Tampax in the "variety pack"--smooth white chipboard. What's worse is I confessed this to my stamping buddy and she thought it was a great idea!

I have a crate in my fruit bin that I keep in there to help the fruit from rolling together. It started out full of clementines but I liked how it worked so well it stayed in there long after the clementines were history! Now my apples don't crush my grapes!
