I guess what I mean is what do you use under your crafts so stuff doesn't get on your table? I've been using butcher paper but I just feel so wasteful. What are some alternatives? I was thinking of using malamine (sp?) board but if ink gets on it, it tends to smear. I hope making sense as to my dilema. Any sugestions?
i use the Basic Grey Magnetic board as my base, then if i'm inking or using liquid glue (read: messy) i'll stick a piece of computer paper under my project.. I know a lot of people use the SU! scrap paper pad, and i think i'm gonna try it just because it has the added bonus of a grid on it.. but ya.. mat and paper!

I use the stampin up! grid paper! I just got it a few weeks ago and already can't believe I ever didn't have it! It's really big paper so you can set your card right on top and have lots of space to stamp off on the scratch paper. Comes in like 100 sheets too, it'll last awhile!
I have a plastic tablecloth on my table and then use my printer paper that has already been printed on but no longer needed. I feel better using the paper for two things before tossing it out.

I use the back sides of non confidential waste copies from work. I also have a box of pin feed printer paper that was headed to the dumpster that I will make good use of!

Organized People are just too lazy to hunt for things!!!
Having a glass table makes things simple. When I'm stamping, though, I usually have a large newsprint drawing pad on top with some recycled paper off to the side for stamping off. The page can last through a number of projects before I have to tear it off for a new page.
I stamp on a wooden cabinet that used to be our dining room buffet and had a piece of plexiglass cut to fit the top - actually it is a little bigger in each direction to accommodate the routed edges. It butts right up against the wall so nothing can fall behind the cabinet which can't be against the wall because of a plug in the wall. It's also nice to slide things under the glass - like little notes to myself!!
Under my actual work I also usually use a piece of scrap paper or SU grid paper.
On my table is my huge cutting mat because that is the only place to store it flat and then I use Stampin Up! grid paper. I write on it and stamp on it There is a picture of a well love one on my blog Love the grid paper!
I have the SU mat that I lay out on my table, and then on that I just use a sheet of printer paper. I like having a white test area for colors, stamps, etc. Then I just dump the whole mat (like a tray) into the garbage when I need a clean space...sometimes it's after one project, sometimes one sheet makes it through a couple...depends on how stampy-snippy-colory-messy I get!

I use one of those large, desktop monthly calendars that you can get for a couple of bucks @ Office Depot. It's nice to practice stamp on...glue over, color on. B/C when it gets too messy or dirty...just rip off the paper and voila! fresh paper underneath. We also had bought a sheet of plastic liner that you would use in a shower wall? but, ended up not using it. So my boyfriend cut a 12" X 12" or roundabouts there and I use it for my distress inks for blending or distressing the sides of my CS. When I'm done, just spray some stamp cleaner or a little water on it and it comes right off. HTH!
Another user of the SU grid paper here, I love it. Under the big pad of grid paper I have a large 22 x 17 grid self healing mat made for quilting I think. I do quick cuts on it by pushing the grid paper aside a bit.
And my desk that I made is a folding table with a 6 foot wide piece of 1" thick plywood screwed on...and on the plywood I laid lanolium flooring so it's all pretty much indestructable.

I use an old flat sheet to cover my work table. I wipe off my blender pens directly on the sheet. I've recycled 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper from work and I use those to actually work on.

I try to be green. I used paper that I have used in my printer that I no longer need. I try to use both sides even if it has printing on one side. I also take scrap paper home from work and use that!
I have a quilting cutting mat on my table and then use shiny catalogs/brochures that come in the mail over that so i can flip a page when I need a clean surface. If i'm out of the shiny catalogs, I use scrap paper from work. I keep a wash cloth on my desk for stamping off extra ink from stamps so I don't feel guilty about creating a lot of trash, and it can clean enough ink off so I don't always feel the need to wash my stamps.
Another vote for SU grid paper. I'll sometimes put a sheet over a stack of newspapers. It pads when I stamp. I have measurements right there (helps for when I am layering. I can use the grid like a stamp-a-ma-jig to determine placement.

Another vote for SU grid paper. The lines are great for lining things up. I also use it for measuring how big of a piece of cs that I need for a particular stamp.
An piece of beveled/tempered glass from an old coffee table is on top of my stamping desk. Then I also use a thin stack of computer paper (the big kind with holes down the sides)! I LOVE it, I can rip off a sheet and start fresh all the time. I just grab a fresh stack from the big box I got at a yard sale for $1. I'm three years into it and haven't put a dent in it yet.
Question on cleaning the cutting mat under my stamping

and that's what I use too. Over a couple of years it's gotten lots of stains on it even with good intentions not for that to happen.
I really don't want to part with it; it still does the job!
I bought a huge box of computer paper the kind with the holes on the side and come joined i just rip & stamp i found if i use 2 pieces at a time that give me better stamping...I got the box at office max. it was a bit pricey but it will last me forever there are 2500 sheets in the box
I bought a tablet of artist paper at Michaels a couple years ago and still haven't used it up - can't remember the cost but it's about the same size as the SU grid paper.

Stampin' Up! Demonstrator and Lovin' it!
For cards and smaller projects, I use a clipboard with a piece of scratch paper (either from our printer or I grab unwanted print outs from work). For larger projects, it's newspaper on top of my desk.
My desk has a piece of glass on top of it, which I love because it's easy to clean and level.
I use a non-stick craft sheet by Ranger. It's heat resistant and nothing sticks to it. Ink wipes right off and even dried crystal lacquer scrapes off. They seem pricey at first, but saves paper and money in the long run. I think Bazzill makes one also.
I work on an old desk that I bought at a yard sale and refinished. I had glass cut to fit and it is awesome! Nothing sticks and it is a breeze to keep clean. I have an old mouse pad and some sheets of paper that I got from a printing shop years ago that I am still working my way through. This is the actual surface that I stamp on.
I would encourage all of you to keep a container on or nearby your stamping station to drop pieces of paper in to recycle. Even in my dinky community, there is a place to recycle paper.Once you get into the recycling habit, it is amazing how much you come up with. Give it a try - then you'll move on to other types of recycling, I hope! My demo was telling me that when she lived in Germany 25 years ago, when the citizens would shop for groceries, they would stand at the trash can by the door and peel of any excess packaging that they could because waste disposal was charged by the pound at their place of residence. WOW! Can you imagine the outcry in our trashy society!
I have my SU mat I use and love it. But under that I have butcher paper. I keep it on for a long time it really has to be ruined for me to replace it. So I don't think I am being wasteful I like having the paper there because I generally stamp the image first to make sure I like how it is stamping before I stamp it on my project.
