I don't get all of the hype about washi tape. I have a friend who swears by the stuff and that is all she uses instead of ribbon. She gave me a bunch for Christmas and I have tried to use it, but I always end up putting ribbon over it.
Maybe I am not using it right or just not use to it. The main problem I have is being able to see through the tape to the paper underneath. Also, the pattern on the tape, seems to fade as you apply it to the card.
I use it sometimes. But I get that the see-through nature of it can be annoying. I will only use it on a solid color paper....and usually just white so that the colors stay as true as possible.
Personally, I think it looks messy with torn ends. Just my 5 cents!

I don't have much and don't often use it unless a challenge calls for it. But I have seen it used very effectively when people stick two or three strips to white card and then die-cut it. Or lay it under a die-cut aperture, like a kite or a balloon, for example.
When it first arrived and everyone was raving about it, I caved and bought some. I found it at Target in the office supply section, and was thrilled it didn't cost much.
Good thing - I have very seldom used it. Lately, I've been using it to put on the back of my envies, kind of like an envelope seal, just a small piece across.
I've seen some elaborate tutorials where people use many different designs and colors and line it up and make patterned paper with it. Way, way too much trouble for me!

I can't imagine thinking of replacing ribbon with washi tape. It's a totally different style of embellishment. Easy to use on single layer cards, CAS, grunge, etc. The torn ends are definitely part of 'the look.' You do have to plan ahead for the see-through effect, especially if you want to keep the exact color on the roll, then use it on white or cream CS. I have some, but haven't gone overboard, needing a carousel holder or anything. I need to search out some more uses for it as shown on Binkimonstermom's Pinterest page...very cute!
To me washi tape and ribbon don't have much more in common than their shape. They produce different effects. Although we see washi mainly used decoratively like ribbon, it can hold things together in casual, odd ways. It can mark off spaces/sections without creating dimension. Or you can layer it for dimension. You can decoupage it and collage it in ways you can't with ribbon.
You can scrunch it or pleat it, and it will stay that way. I've seen some more opaque than others, and right now washi comes in a wider variety of patterns than ribbon. It's easy to create borders and corners with washi, and you easily can tear it up into small pieces and scatter it around a project. I don't have a lot of it, but I'm glad I have a selection when I need it.
I won some Washi Tape in a competition - and don't really understand what all the fuss is about. I did do a "Make and Take" class at a Craft Show where we made a small white gift bag and we put black, orange and purple washi tape on it - just stripes going down the length of the bag - with a view to using it for Halloween for putting lollies in - and I have to say that it looked really nice. Simple but effective. I use my Washi Tape it as sticky tape when wrapping up a gift plus I use it to hold down my dies when I put my cardstock through my Big Shot! But honestly, if I hadn't actually won my pile of tape, I wouldn't go out and buy it even if it does look really pretty sitting up on my shelf
I think it's cute on the more casual cards or used with diecuts like Sabrina mentioned, but I'm another that doesn't feel the need to get a stash of it. I have a few Halloween rolls and a few Christmas rolls, and that's probably all I'll acquire. Like Jocelyn said, it'd be one more thing to "look really pretty sitting up on my shelf"...
I have a bunch and, in theory, I love it. But the only thing I use it for is to seal home-made envelopes shut. I have never used it on a card and rarely on a scrapbook page. I'll try to use up what I have and then try to resist buying more. A fad or an embellishment we'll use forever? We'll see.

I am so glad to see this thread. I thought it was just me!!! I think washi tape is a fad and I'll end up being stuck with it. I think it looks messy as well and I really prefer ribbon. I live in a house full of males so I think I need something more feminine...like ribbon!

Do you like/use washi tape?
I like it! Not for everything but for mainly small accents on cards. It's supposed to be a bit sheer so I usually only use it on white or vanilla card stock. I wouldn't put it over another pattern or anything.
I also like that you can use it to make super easy and simple cards without a lot of fuss and ones that are flat and easily mailable!
I'll see if I can link a few of the cards I've used it on I really like...
I have two rolls of washi tape and I have barely used them. I have found that the sticky side is not very sticky and it starts peeling away from the base of whatever I adhere it to. I do agree it looks great on casual and simple designs, but it's just not for me.

I don't have any! Not really interested in it. I love ribbon too! I think it's kind of funny SU has a washi tape stamp set. I have seen cards made with that set, and they are cute.

I really love that set! It makes super cute and quick cards!!! :-)
I've seen some really pretty washi tapes that make me want to buy them. LoL! I do own a few rolls, but haven't learned how to effectively use them yet. I'll probably figure it out after the fad has passed and you can't find them in the stores any more.

I have thought about making my own first before spending money on it but haven't got around to it yet lol there are videos on you tube showing how to make it
