I had a blog post titled "I struck gold". It's an old one, over a year ago, but just recently I started getting a lot of anonymous spam comments on it for payday loans. Blogger was catching and quarantining them, but it was bugging me. I actually went back and edited the post title, and haven't had any more spam since.
I agree that the most recent incarnation of Blogger's word verification is terrible - there a couple of blogs that I visit regularly which aren't getting as many comments from me. Although recently it seems to be a word and a number which at least is easier than two illegible words.
I just checked my settings to be sure, and I only moderate comments for posts over 30 days. I had some spam comments left a few months ago and they seemed to like my older posts for some reason. I have always allowed anonymous comments, but I don't think I've ever gotten one to be honest! But I welcome all visitors and love hearing from them!
I am new to a blog (just started my craft blog today!!!) I removed verification and let anyone comment, I will see how it goes. Thanks for the heads up!
Oh I hear you! Drives me nutty to write up a comment then see I don't have the appropriate ID to leave a comment. I have a blog but it's Wordpress.org rather than .com and despite extensive Googling I haven't found how to leave comments on those blogs that need an ID.
I have my comments wide open on my blog but I do have a plug-in to catch spam, it's called Akismet for those who are reading this and might need a spam catcher. I get about 30 spam messages a day and Akismet catches them all - so all I have to do is click "empty spam" and they all get deleted at once.

Drives me nutty when they are on Blog Hops! But we are all learning. I tend to go back to the "leader/store front" of the blog hop and notify them that I would have left a comment but it was impossible.
My blog says it takes comments from Wordpress in OpenID (just checked). Does that only apply to dotcom?

Hey Kristen, I just checked your blog and was able to leave a comment successfully You've also got the option for someone to leave just their name and URL if they wish so I was able to use that. Whereas other blogs I've seen only give you the option of Open ID/Blogger/Wordpress etc. I'm not 100% sure about the Wordpress thing, but I noticed that if you choose that option it gives you the example: http://(user name).wordpress.com - so I'm guessing it's just for .com. If someone definitely knows the answer to this, I'd love to know how to get around it.

If you have a blog or a website, you can post a comment on the above example. Otherwise you can't. The person who owns the Blog chooses from a list of response-forms she wants to allow. On that list is the option for "Anonymous". Without that option, I cannot post on her blog . AND, many Bloggers don't allow their e-mail address to show. Instead, they have a form on which I can write to them but only if I have a mail program on my computer with which to send the mail to them. I have an account with a web-based mailer that is not on my computer, so there is no way for me to contact the Blog owner to tell them I would comment if they put their address on their Profile.
I have mine set so that anyone can leave a comment. I appreciate the time it takes for people who look at my blog to leave a comment. I just wish I could figure out how to get more followers and people to look at my blog. I only have 8 followers..:(
I spent some time yesterday going through a couple of big blog hops and couldn't belived how many people have word verification turned on! The worst part isn't the fact that it just slows you down, but the fact that you can't even read the words/numbers you have to type for verification. There were at least 3 where the numbers were impossible to read.

Thanks for the comment!
As for having/not having email address. I know I don't because I have been cyber bullied before and I am just not going there again.
FYI Blogger has changed their base mode of operation. I received an email about it and there was a note at the top of my blog that indicated that blogger didn't recognize my something or other and that some of my applications on blogger wouldn't work. I think I am going to have to change from blogger to something else, maybe wordpress. We'll see.
This drives me buggy as well. Lately I've gotten to where if there isn't a place for just a url and an email I just don't leave a comment. It just gets to be so frustrating to have so many different id's just to leave a comment somewhere.
I've always had my comments on my blog set on "preview" before they get posted so I've avoided having the spam actually on my blog but I still was getting tons of spam to delete in my admin and it just became time consuming so I ended up puting a plugin on my blog for spam so it wouldn't even be there for me to preview and have to delete. I used BoomCaptcha which gives a little thing for my visitors to enlarge the code if they can't make it out. I really like it because the codes they give anyway are pretty readable.

Even if readable, that's still Word Verification which, judging by what I've been reading, keeps some people away from commenting.
gah I'm getting annoyed. Since setting comments to allow anyone to leave one, I'm getting several spam comments a day and it's more every day. It started with one every couple of days. Now it's up to at least 6 or 7 a day. I expect it will keep rising. I may have to switch it back-I'll be on vacation for 2 weeks and may not be able to check my email often.
It won't get any better, that's for sure. People who spam really suck.

I'm happy to leave my name and my e-mail address when I comment, but why won't you let me have that opportunity? Maybe there are lots of us who don't have the time or the talent for owning a blog or a web site or a social networking site. Wouldn't you like to read our admiring Comments anyway? Wouldn't you like to hear how you inspire us and help us maybe some day turn out cards good enough to Blog about? If you want more lovin' of your work, maybe you could change your comment section to accept it from whoever wants to give it.
Just sayin' :-)

I'm happy to receive comments as well! As far as I know- my blog company doesn't have restrictions like the ones you described above.
