Hi
I am trying to find a place where I could get together with some women and teenagers and donate my time and supplies so that they can make cards. I read where someone was doing this at their local Ronald Mcdonald House (twice a month). Well, I contacted my local RMH and was told that the house is too small (only 18 rooms) and most of the time, the families are at the hospital. So setting aside some time to stamp would be out of the question. So, I will be donating already made cards to the house so that families can send them out.
Where else could I volunteer to make cards? I've contacted our local United Way but have not heard back from them. I wouldn't be able to volunteer during the week so it would have to be on the weekends (a lot of our senior centers/day cares would be happy if I helped them out but that's during the week).
Maybe the Girl Scouts? They could have a mother/daughter session. For that matter the Boy Scouts might like it especially for holidays like Mother's Day.
back in my hometown there is a organization called ARC.. they teach mentally disabled how to do 'normal' things on their own and teach them small employable skills like factory work.
How about calling the local libraries and asking about children's programs? Perhaps there is some child's crafty book and you could host story time/activity? Actually, you might have a chat with one of the librarians (as in, actual staff and not one of the part time volunteers) and ask if they have any ideas-- often they are very keyed in to all the community activities going on, especially for school age children.
You might call the county extension office, see if they have any ideas.
High school, for a club. I've been thinking of this option myself, as a great chance to build something positive into kids who are facing so much negativity and pressure. Still need to talk with the administration though and see if it's even an option...

You might also contact local battered women's shelters. They are usually pretty secretive about location but if you can be properly vertted, there are women and children there that are really in dire straits. Every tiny ray of sunshine helps when you are trying to heal. It might be easier to go through your church (if you attend) to find these, though.
Also, what about hospitals that have long-term wards? Lots of people with nothing to do but daytime TV, which SUX!
