BH&G had one in their mag a few years ago. It looked like a castle and was made with a square tissue box and 4 paper towel tubes attached to the corners, square notches cut at the tops. The entire thing was covered in red construction paper, windows and doors of black construction paper. Flags with straws for poles. The top was left open to hold the cards. We made one, it was so easy, but looked impressive. Good luck!
My daughter has to do the same thing. I am going to take an old shoe box and cut a hole in the top large enough to fit treats in. Then I was going to cover it in some sort of plain paper and have her stamp all over it with the Happy Hearts stamp set and maybe cut out some hearts to glue on there.
If its possible a large coffee tin is great too. Just cover the outside in red or pink or combo of both and cut a hole big enough in the plastic lid to let in the cards and goodies.
You could also do a large paper shopping bag, you know the ones you can get at Micheals for a buck. Lots of stamping and ribbons and cutouts would make it look great. Handles make it easy for small hands to carry.
I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for-but I made really cute "mailboxes"with my 3rd grade today. We used 2 quart orange juice cartons, cut the top off, so you are left with just a rectangular carton. Then cover with red paper. We cut out pink and purple hearts and decorated with lots of glitter and "jewels". The part they liked best was adding the flag on the side (the part you put up if you have mail you want picked up) We made the flag heart-shaped and put their name on it. Very cute-and pretty easy!!!
the coffee tin idea is an excellent idea.
I found a shoebox and am covering it with red foil
then I need to stamp valentines to go on the outside.
My son will help me.
The giant foster farms corn dog box, it is a great sturdy, easy to decorate box, and you can lift it up for large items.. made a beautiful one once, with stamp decorations of course for my sons Valentines once.....
For our best valentine box ever, we taped the lid onto a shoe box. Then we cut off one of the square ends, lid and all as one piece. We covered everything in decorated paper. We rigged this piece with a couple of brads so that the box opened like a real mail box. It takes a bit of cutting to get the 'door' fitted correctly but it's pretty easy. We made a 'flag' for the side with a heart at the top and secured that with a brad too. Hope this makes sense.
This was such a hit that the next year everyone made one like it.
Good luck and most of all, have fun!

We did our container yesterday - my dd decorated a paint can and it turned out adorable. It had to have positive "peacebuilder words on it" She sponge painted some red paint on it - we used the label maker to make the words like courage, friendship, honesty etc... then added some rickrack around the top and a big red gingham bow to the handle . Oh and some su heart punches here and there. She loves it!
Oh, I am looking at the Folgers "tin" on my counter -- it is the PLASTIC container now, and it is already red -- a plastic containter with black plastic top, all you would need to do is cut a slit in the top, and then decorate some paper for the side and stick on. Basically just 3 panels would need to be covered.
Just a thought -- I know you said box, but it screamed out at me from the counter.
Another vote for tissue box too, since it already has the hole in the top. I think someone had a pattern for a tissue box cover.
You are all so sweet to reply!!! Thank you! I still haven't narrowed it down yet but hopefully we will make it this weekend together. I don't want to buy anything if I don't have to, so I'll look around and see what I have. Those are all such great ideas!!!
I just saw an article in one of the kid's craft magazines I got at Michael's (or maybe it was Nick Jr.? ). They just decorated a Kleenex box. Looked very cute. And, this time of year there are certainly lots to be found!
