Default Unmounted rubber stamps?

I've been looking for a particular stamp (a great blue heron) & finally found a really pretty one, but it comes unmounted without a cushion. How do these work? Isn't the cushion important? I've been only using SU! and wood-mounted stamps so far, but I'm starting to branch out to the cling stamps, too. Just looking for a little info here...

You would probably be surprised at how well uncushioned stamps can work! I use all my SU stamps as unmounted, and those that I have stripped down to bare rubber work just as well as those that I've left the cushion on.

However, some folks really prefer the feel of cushion - there are several vendors who sell EZ Mount cling cushion which you can use to turn bare rubber stamps into cushioned cling stamps. If you find it at a lss, you'll probably pay about $4-$5 for an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet. There are online vendors who sell it for less, especially if you need multiple sheets.

What I do with my bare stamps - try them naked first, using some poster tape or double-stick tape to stick them to the block. If you get a good image and like the feel of it, you can either continue using the tape, or you can coat the back of the rubber with repositionable glue (Ailene's Tack-It-Over-And-Over or Mono Multi in the white & green bottle). Sometimes with the bare rubber, it works better if you stamp with some sort of cushion under your work - a mousepad, a stack of paper or a magazine all work. If you decide you need the cushion - and some stamps don't seem to work well without it - then you can purchase some EZ Mount and turn it into a cling stamp.

Honestly, the rubber cling stamps you've already bought are just bare rubber where the vendor has already attached the EZ Mount (or its equivalent) for you.

I have a lovely fairy set my daughter gave me about six years ago...before I was really into stamping. It's four fairly large stamps. I always thought I had to have someone cut a block of wood for me! Then I realized people were taking the rubbah off the wood! Thanks for a little more info on this. Now I can use these stamps!
