Default Trouble With New SU! Square Punches

Is anyone else having trouble with these? I bought both new sizes and the big punch won't cleanly cut through the paper; the edges seem frayed or fuzzy? I did punch through aluminum foil and it didn't seem to help. Then, the smaller punch won't punch through the paper at all. It gets stuck and won't punch all the way through.

I'm surprised that I'm having trouble with both.

I am having problems with the brand new one...I was going to call SU! but I wasnt sure if it was how i was punching...does that make sense? Anyway the new one cuts all sides but the bottom of the square unless i do it hard.

Couple thoughts...
Try punching through wax paper. Sometimes the guts just need to be "oiled up."

Next, I have a bit of trouble if I'm too close to the edge of the paper. Maybe punch in a bit further?

If that doesn't work, I'd send them back. They should be easy!

I didn't know to use wax paper, I thought it was aluminum-DUH! I'll give that a try. But, as for cutting too close to the edge, I'm not even close. If the wax doesn't work, I'm gonna call DS on Monday. But, true to form, I was going to use these for a SC tomorrow--I guess I shouldn't have waited until the last minute, hugh?

Thanks!

Trouble....OH NO!

I want that punch too(see the topic on the paper piecing punch)...
I hate cutting squares...mine never seem to turn out right(funny thing about not meausuring!) I just want to punch and go....

I guess if people are having trouble with them I won't order. How disappointing!

Hope to see more happy square punchers on this post!

My new punch is getting stuck, too! I have to play with it to get it to go all the way through. I thought it was just mine and it was just the alignment!

Well, I have the large square punch and mine is working great. Do they come from a distributor? Or maybe two different ones?

Glad I haven't ordered them yet. Sorry you all are having trouble. It makes me laugh to see how common it is to blame ourselves for any problems we have with our toys. I thought it was the legacy of my mother's german irish catholic guilt coming through.
Please post if anyone talks to DS and finds a new hint.

Okay, I couldn't wait. I tried the wax paper and still no difference. I again tried the small punch and still wouldn't punch. Sooo, I called DS and they're sending two new ones. He told me this was the first he had heard of there being a problem, so maybe just a bad bunch?

My big square punch just came this afternoon. It punches easily enough, but the edges are awful...very rough. Also when you put a piece of cardstock in all the way the square does not come out even with the edge of the cardstock...does that make sense? I was debating about sending it back. My sideline has one she got last year that works great. I was always wanting to borrow hers, which is why I got this one. So disapointing!

My large one works great. The new smaller punch stinks! It works OK for card stock but doesn't cut nice clean edges with the SU designer paper. I think I'll be calling SU Monday.

My CONVEX and CONCAVE punches do the same thing!! They are 'fuzzy around the edges and not clean cut. Ijust now tried my new 1 1/4 sq punch and it punches fuzzy too!!! It is awful! :? It looks like I went out and bought cheap paper squares! The original sq. punch from last year punches beautifully! oh poo.......

so should it be fuzzy at all? I usually have to trim up fuzzies, but I thought that was normal.... is that not normal? I guess I don't on my old punch.... hmm..

Sorry to hear some of you are having trouble with your square punches. I got both and tried them out. They seem to work O.K. for me. However, I only used them a couple of times then left on vacation. So perhaps when I get home and start using them on different projects I won't be as thrilled. Hope that isn't the case. Verda

Try using your sanding block on the edges and see if that helps. I know it works on the punch out tags when the little nibs are on the edges. Verda

My small square does the same thing. The edges on the corners seemed to be catching. I needed them for a workshop that week, so didn't want to call DS. My DH pushed on the center part to try and realign it, but it still punches hard. I might call DS next week and get a replacement. I don't want customers thinking they are all going to punch that hard.

My large square I got last year and it works great.

I had trouble with my square punch--I punched through a LOT of aluminum foil (or tin foil, for you Pittsburghers!) and now it works just fine. I'm talking 25-30 times, at least. I didn't get mine from SU, I got it at Joann's but it's one of those with the whale tail, so it's very similar. It did say on the box to punch though the foil when you first get your punch, and then as needed. It also said to punch through wax paper just to keep it "oiled". I know many people said this already but it did work for me, so if you have an SC tomorrow, you may want to try it--good luck!

Default punches

I just got mine out of the drawer and tried them after reading all these and mine work just fine! Maybe a little bit fuzzy but you can run your finger down it and it looks just fine.

I already had the big one square from last year and it works great. I got the 1 1/4 in square and I had to cut left over paper on each sqare. I called demo support yesterday and they sent out a new one today. They said that it wasn't normal and didn't have any problem exchanging it. My convex and little circle one work fine. I hope that my new square will be better then my old one. Maybe it was just a certain batch. I ordered mine the first day that you could order out of the new catalog, so maybe it was just the first batch I hope.

I'm having problems with the double hole punch. I was so excited to see that because I could never do two holes in a straight line for ribbon or whatever. Well, it works great with a single sheet of cs - barely puts a dent in two sheets. Ordered it from convention with demo specials. I'll call DS Monday and see what they say it should do. I was excited to see "whale tale" punches - those thumb things in the middle kill me! But I'm not going to order any new punches until I hear a lot more positive!

Thanks for honesty!

Default CM punches

Well, I don't know if this is somthing everyone wants to hear... BUT my Creative Memories punches work great. Of course when I was a demo I never used them in front of people, but as a "customer" we have a right to a punch that works. If you want for personal use, I strongly suggest the CM punches. They are great. Everything else I have is SU though (just so you know I am pro SU ).

p.s. no, I don't sell CM...

I have always heard to punch a couple of times through fine sandpaper and then punch through waxpaper.

Might be worth a try

I don't have the SU square punches -- but I do have lots of shaped punches from various companies. It does sound like there was a bad batch. I wouldn't give up completely!

As for punhcing through aluminum -- you need several layers and then need to punch quite a few time. I use 7 layers (just fold a sheet over back and forth a few times). The foil really does sharpen your punches -- and if you punch a lot, you will need to sharpen them at some point! The same goes for wax paper -- several layers and punch out quite a bit in order to really lubricate the punch.

Also, if you ever are using punches and it gets "stuck" in the middle -- you can put it in the freezer for about an hour or so and it will usually do the trick. Once you get it "unstuck", be sure to punch through wax paper or it will probably just stick again.

Hope this helps.

I have a non SU square punch and it works great! But I think it's the same brand that SU used to sell before they got the whale tail punches. Mine is Marvy brand. My corner punches that I purchased from SU are Marvy brand too...I thought that was weird.

DS is very good about sending you new products if something you ordered is defective. Several times I've ordered designer vellum and when I recieve it the corners are bent or frayed looking. (Personally I think they need to package their designer papers different as this happens with almost every package I order). They sent me a new pack pronto and didn't even ask me to return the old pack. I kind of wish they had asked me to return the old pack so they would be able to correct how they ship this stuff!

Don't feel bad calling DS! SU doesn't want demos to demo defective products...that's not good for business!

I have not bought any of the new punches yet...put the stamp in the freezer-for contraction of metal parts...foil-for removing rough edge and sort of sharpening...wax paper-for sort of a lubrication/gliding. Hope this solves the problem before it tricles down to our customers.

Yup! I think we all got a bad batch of punches! My SU square punch I got last year works beautifully, the one I just got is all fuzzy, and I didn't pay for fuzz. All of my other SU punches work great, so this must just be defective. You shouldn't cope with it, return it and get one that works as it is intended.

Anytime you have a product that doesn't work well, take it back to your demonstrator, hopefully within 90 days so they can return it!

Default SU new square punches

I have just received the large and smaller NEW square punches. I did try the large one last night and it wasn't a crisp cut so I tried it again and it was fine. Hmm, going to have to go and punch a bit more. I hope it's not a manufacturing defect.

I would call your rep and or SU and find out what they will do.

There IS a guarentee on defects and if it doesn't work..... its defective!

I don't think a punch owuld be operator error!

I'm glad to hear that quite a few of you have gotten punches that are crisp. I just got the 1-3/8 quare punch and it's really, really rough. I've tried sanding, nail filing, lots (and lots) of aluminum and waxed paper and nothing does the trick. So I'll call DS and get a replacement. I'd encourage others to do the same just so SU has a handle on how many defective ones were sent out. Then they can deal with the manufacturer (s) if need be.

I ordered the 1 3/8" square punch on 9/1. It will arrive next week. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's a clean cut!

Default Fuzzy Edges

Get used to it, if the punches are made by Marvy. They are famous for poor cutting.

You can try sand paper to de-burr the edges of the punch.

I have taken a fine emery board to the paper edges to rid the fuzz.

I quit buying Marvy punches.
