(I know this is not the "correct" place for this thread, but I want to share this information with as many of you as possible.)
So many of us are grieving as we hear about the tragedy at VA Tech. People on the Current Events thread have expressed feelings of confusion, anger, helplessness, fear, uncertainty, and deep, deep sadness.
Let's come together as a community, and pour our feelings into constructive activity by making cards for the grieving families at VA Tech. It may be therapeutic for us, and is a way to express our compassion for others.
I am starting a Splitcoast Family Card Bank, for the families who lost loved ones at VA Tech. You may send as many or as few cards as your heart calls you to send. No rules. Just include a message of sympathy in your card(s), please. Think about the awesome show of love and support we could show these families if everyone at SCS made even ONE card!
I will gather your cards and make sure they are forwarded to the appropriate people at the university.
My mailing address is:

I'm with you. I can't even begin to know how awful this has been for those parents and families. Sometimes a kind word and knowing that others are thinking of you at a time like this can help just a little. Great idea and thanks for including us.
Thanks for starting this. I've been without computer access since the tragedy, but will send you a card (or cards) this weekend. I'm pretty near Blacksburg and it has affected all of us deeply, even if we are not Hokies.

I'm in. I'll get several cards in the mail to you by Saturday. Thank you for doing this.

Count me in also. I'll send them out Sat. on my weekly post office run. I can't imagine even having to deal with this. My heart breaks thinking of all the lost ones. I can only hope our cards will brighten their day just a little knowing that strangers care and hope for the best for them.
Thanks for being so caring and considerate in this time of need for so many.
Kelley
I'm sure the families would appreciate use of the school colors. Also, there is a "Hokie Hope" Orange & Maroon Effect on Friday, April 20. I can't resize the .jpg, but here is the text from the flyer I received yesterday,
Orange & Maroon Effect Friday April 20th
Virginia Tech family members across the country have united to declare this Friday, April 20th, an "Orange and Maroon Effect" day to honor those killed in the tragic events on campus Monday, and to show support for Virginia Tech students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, and friends. "Orange and Maroon Effect" was born several years ago as an invitation to Tech fans to wear orange and maroon to Virginia Tech athletic events. We invite everyone from all over the country to be a part of the Virginia Tech family this Friday, to wear orange and maroon to support the families of those who were lost, and to support the school and community we all love so much.
Thanks in advance.

Those sound good, but I will have to actually check my stash when I get home this evening. Maybe more a Cranberry Crisp or Baroque Burgundy if people have it for the burgundy, but I am really certain no one is going to look and see if the colors match exactly.

Somewhere on the web I found this jpg (my avatar). Do you think it would be tacky on the cards? I haven't decided. Cannot wait to get started though.

Not sure how to get this photo to you, I will just put it in my (tiny) gallery!!
Stand by.
I also copied and pasted the speech that the poet gave, I thought it was incredible. She really got people uplifted. I am inspired by those types of people.
Thanks so much, Elaine. I called a radio station (not in this area) who was questioning the chant at the end of the convocation. This explains it perfectly and I have forwarded it to the DJs who were concerned that it was "different." I know it's not really important what they think, but I didn't like that they were critizing our students who were just trying to show solidarity.

Thanks for joining this effort, all. I think the thumbnails that Elaine and Becky posted are also symbols of solidarity, and would be entirely appropriate to replicate on cards.
I just heard that CNN has decided to show the videos of Cho "judiciously", because it is retraumatizing the VA Tech students and families. Bravo!
Katherine,
Thank you soooooo much for doing this! I live 30 miles from the Va. Tech campus and am a Hokie. I can't begin to explain how much this tragedy has affected everyone connected with this school. I have many friends with children attending VT and am very thankful that none of them were hurt or killed. My heart goes out to those who were not so fortunate. It is very sweet of you to gather and send these cards. ( I wish I had thought of doing this.) From the entire "Hokie Nation" - Thank you!

Your cards will be very much appreciated. I have a daughter who attends VT. She is a senior and will graduate on 12 May. This has been a very difficult time for our family, our daughter new two of the students that were killed. VT is a very stronge and tight knit community, our daughter loves VT and considers Blacksburg her home. Time will heal or hearts with GODs help, but this tragedy will never be forgotten. Thank you all for your love and support.
Omigosh, so many of my sistahs are connected to this tragedy in such a real and concrete way. WebbL, please express our sincere condolences to your daughter. I have been so impressed by the students at Virginia Tech during this whole ordeal. {{HUGS}} and prayers to all of you.
WebbL,
I will be praying for your daughter and the families of her friends. I can't begin to imagine how hard this is on those kids who lost their dear friends.
Hugs and Prayers to her.

WebbL -- please let your daughter know she and all the members of the Virginia Tech family are in our thoughts and prayers. Blacksburg and Tech are a great place to live, but the heart and soul are all the great people there. Hugs.....
